Common Questions About Making A White Chocolate Mocha

How To Make A Starbucks Iced White Chocolate Mocha At Home // by a barista

What is a white chocolate mocha latte made of?

A mocha latte is made of espresso, milk, and white chocolate syrup.

What is the difference between a latte and a white chocolate mocha latte?

This seems to be a common question with a very simple answer a mocha latte is simply a normal latte plus a white chocolate syrup in it.

Where can I get white chocolate syrup?

Most grocery stores should carry it in the area by the coffee department with all of the drink/dessert sauces and syrups or you can make it at home in less than 10 minutes with just two ingredients. Click HERE for the recipe.

Can I make a latte without espresso?

Yes, so there are a few different options for ways to get close to espresso. The cheapest option would be to brew quite strong coffee in a normal coffee pot which wont be exactly the same but itll work. If you have a moka pot or an aeropress coffee maker, those will get you pretty close to regular espresso. If you use the moka pot or espresso, follow the same proportions in the recipe but if you choose to go the strongly brewed coffee route, use 3/4 cups coffee and 1/2 cup milk.

How To Make Starbucks Iced White Chocolate Mocha

First, make the vanilla simple syrup. Combine the sugar, water, and vanilla extract in a small saucepan and place over medium heat.

Whisk together until heated and sugar is dissolved. This will only take a few minutes. It does not need to boil. As soon as the syrup is clear and the sugar is dissolved, it’s done.

Next, add the vanilla extract. Let the vanilla syrup cool to room temperature.

To make the white chocolate syrup, begin by chopping the white chocolate into small pieces.

Next, melt the chocolate using your air fryer or microwave. For best results, use good-quality white chocolate. This will take about 2 minutes.

It melts quite quickly. Stir it periodically with a spoon until smooth and melted.

Then, brew fresh espresso using your preferred method, or make strong coffee instead.

After that, pour two espresso shots into a blender with the melted chocolate and blend until smooth. You can also use an immersion blender.

Next, assemble your iced mocha. Fill a tall glass with ice cubes, crushed or cubed .

Next, add vanilla simple syrup.

Next, pour in blended espresso and chocolate.

Add milk of your choice.

Top with whip cream if desired.

Add your favorite straw and stir to combine the ingredients. That is all there is to it! I told you it was simple! So drink up and enjoy it any time you like!

Hint: Keep the simple syrup in the fridge so you can quickly make a homemade coffee anytime you want!

How To Make A Mocha Latte

Ready to get your caffeine fix in a delicious and EASY way? Heres how you whip up a copycat Starbucks Mocha Latte!

  • Start by grabbing a small saucepan and putting the burner on medium-low heat. Heat up your milk and white chocolate chips over med-low heat until melted. Make sure you are stirring constantly, you dont want your white chocolate chips to burn to the bottom of the pan!
  • Next, brew espresso or strong coffee. I personally use my Keurig to brew up some strong coffee for my mocha latte. I brew on the 6oz setting to get the coffee super strong and made it twice to equal the 12 ounces needed for this mocha latte recipe.
  • Now, divide your milk & chocolate mixture evenly between two cups and add in your strong coffee.
  • Top with a generous amount of whipped cream and enjoy!
  • If youre more of an iced mocha latte person , you can totally make this recipe the cold way! All you have to do is let your ingredients cool down a bit, then pour your latte over ice. Its important to cool down your coffee and milk/chocolate mixture first because if you pour them over ice when theyre still hot, your mocha latte will be watered down and not nearly as delicious!

Tips On Ordering White Mocha Drinks

    • If a drink already comes with white mocha sauce, Starbucks doesnt charge extra for more pumps of white mocha sauce or regular mocha sauce. Mocha sauce and white mocha sauce can be used interchangeably without paying more.
    • A popular way to use white mocha sauce is to mix it in with regular mocha sauce. For example, if a drink usually has 4 pumps of mocha sauce, it can be ordered with 2 pumps regular mocha sauce and 2 pumps white mocha sauce.
    • White chocolate is a popular ingredient to pair with other Starbucks syrups, like peppermint or toffee nut.
    • Mocha sauce is bittersweet, so its common to add pumps of white mocha sauce to sweeten.

It took me 2 years to find lemon extract! No, I dont live in BFE, but seems like vanilla extract is the only thing we are extracting out here.

So the next best thing? I bought some crushed peppermint and hoped that it would melt in the steamy hot milk! It worked!

Ingredients For A White Chocolate Mocha

White Chocolate Chips – We used Ghirardelli white chocolate chips. So yummy!

Coconut Oil – We love the coconut oil at Trader Joe’s. Great price and just the right amount.

Espresso – I own the Nespresso Original Inissia with Aeroccino. I got this particular model because you can purchase pods made by other brands, as well as Nespresso. It’s a HUGE money saver for us, since my husband and I both love coffee drinks and espresso. Plus, the aeroccino is amazing! It makes fantastic foam, no matter what milk you use. Even Trader Joe’s sells compatible espresso pods with fun flavors!

Milk – Rachel likes this drink with whole or 2%, but Amy makes it with Oatly Oat Milk and it’s just as delicious!

Whip Cream – Again, Rachel uses regular whip cream and Amy prefers the almond milk whip cream. Either way you top it, it’ll be a total treat!

    How Nutritious Is It

From a nutrition standpoint, the White Chocolate Mocha might not be your best friend. This isn’t to say it’s completely unhealthy, just that it shouldn’t be the biggest element of a balanced diet.

While the espresso itself provides little more than caffeine, the rest of the beverage is very calorically dense. Since it’s made with 2% milk, there’s a lot of dairy in the drink. You may get some calcium and vitamin D from here, but probably not enough to realistically balance out the other elements of the drink to make it a substantially nutritious choice.

The White Chocolate Mocha sauce is made from a lot of sugar in fact, it’s the first ingredient in the syrup, per Starbucks. The whipped cream also adds fat and additional sugar, since it’s sweetened with vanilla syrup.

Following the standard recipe, a grande has 430 calories, 18 grams of fat, 53 grams of sugar, and 54 grams of carbohydrates. If the rule is everything in moderation, it’s probably a drink best reserved for smaller quantities.

How Much Caffeine Is In It

Starbucks® White Chocolate Mocha Caffe Latte Specialty Coffee Beverage ...

If youre thinking about the White Chocolate Mocha because youre in need of a pick-me-up, caffeine content is likely your main question. Luckily, given the drink is espresso-based, its pretty easy to customize just how much caffeine you want in your drink.

In a grande and following the standard recipe with two shots of espresso, the drink has 150 milligrams of caffeine. If you compare this to a grande brewed Pikes Place that has 310 milligrams of caffeine, you can start to see where youre sitting.

If you want more caffeine, feel free to add an extra shot or two of espresso. Each shot contains 75 milligrams of caffeine. If youre wanting to avoid some jitters, order your drink with less than the standard amount.

If youre looking at a tall or venti as your size of choice, they have one and three shots, respectively, when following the standard recipe.

    Why Youll Love This Recipe

What Is It And How Is It Made

Starbucks’ White Chocolate Mocha is very similar to their standard mocha, the big difference being, as the name implies, the type of chocolate sauce used. Similar to a mocha, a White Chocolate Mocha is made with steamed milk and shots of espresso, but it gets white chocolate sauce. This is then all topped with whipped cream for a decadent and delicious drink.

In many ways, this drink is made similarly to a latte. As far as the actual liquid contents go, it’s about 80% steamed milk and 20% espresso, according to Starbucks. For this reason, it’s much more rich and creamy than, say, a cup of brewed coffee with cream poured in. If you were wondering how the white chocolate fits in there, it’s mixed with the espresso before the milk is added.

The standard recipe uses 2% milk, but as all drinks are at Starbucks, this is customizable if you don’t want a lot of dairy. However, be warned that the White Chocolate Mocha sauce does have milk in it, so if you order this drink even with an alternative milk, it won’t be completely vegan or lactose-free.

Brew a double shot of espresso and then pour into a tall glass over ice.

In a separate glass or bowl, combine your milk of choice with 1 tablespoon of white chocolate sauce. Use a handheld milk frother to combine fully.

Then pour the white chocolate milk over the espresso and ice.

That’s it! This iced white chocolate mocha is delicious as is.

But if desired, you can top with whipped cream, white chocolate shavings, and a drizzle of white chocolate sauce.

Is It A Permanent Menu Item

The White Chocolate Mocha is a permanent item on the Starbucks menu. The Seattle-based coffee shop has made no indication that it’s going away anytime soon.

However, Starbucks does offer certain variations of this drink from time to time that are available for a limited period. In the winter, around the holidays, the company often brings back the Toasted White Chocolate Mocha, a variation of their classic white mocha but with a little more spice, per Insider.

They’ve also had a Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha before that is also a fan favorite in the months of November and December. Inside secret: A similar version of this drink can be ordered year-round if you just ask for a White Chocolate Mocha with peppermint syrup.

With the white mocha seemingly as staple as brewed coffee, the real question isn’t if the drink is going to go away, but rather what variations of it will Starbucks debut next.
