For those of you like me that need a little help throughout the day to get the job done, a robust black tea is most likely going to have the biggest caffeine punch. But this is not to say that a cup of green tea wont do the very same for some people.
With all of the health benefits associated with tea, there are lots of folks trying to make a transition from coffee to tea. One of my recent blogposts covers this topic and gives some clear and easy strategies.
Does Tea Have Caffeine
Youre not alone in asking us this question, and resources out there often muddle the truth. Heres the honest answer: The actual amounts of caffeine in your tea cup will vary. There are a lot of factors that go into making your cup of tea caffeinated. Of course, the ingredients play a big part, but so do the temperature you brew your tea at, how long you brew it for, the type of tea you are drinking, other ingredients, and serving size.
Even if we brewed your tea for you with precise measurements, the environmental growing conditions of tea plants can affect caffeine levels. So there still would be no way for us to tell you the exact amount of caffeine in your cup. Thats why we dont put the mg of caffeine on our tea packaging. Comparing The Caffeine In Tea And Coffee
When we drink a cup of tea our bodies react in a much different way than when we consume other caffeinated beverages such as coffee.
There is less than half the amount of caffeine in a cup of tea as compared to a cup of coffee. Our bodies absorb the caffeine in tea at about half the rate compared to other caffeinated beverages.
Tea is the only beverage that contains an amino acid called theanine which evokes a sense of calm. Theanine works with the caffeine to produce what we in the tea biz like to call a Calm Alert.
This means that you get a lift and the improved ability to focus without the crash and jitters that are many times associated with coffee or soda.

What About Decaf Teas
Unfortunately, teas that are labeled as still contain small levels of caffeine, and the process used to achieve this label is a chemical one. Therefore, you are trading chemicals for less caffeine.
So, as you can see, the answer to the caffeine question is not a simple one.
Personally, I begin the day with a cup or two of black tea, and as the day progresses, I move on to a green or white.
I usually wrap things up in front of the television when I finally get to sit down for the day and enjoy a cup of my favorite herbal tisane. Sometimes I make it through the show without falling asleep, sometimes not.

Is Drinking Decaffeinated Tea Good For You
The type of decaffeinated tea you choose matters. There are two primary processes that commercial manufacturers use to strip true teas of their natural caffeine, and some are safer than others.
Certified organic tea makers treat leaves with carbon-dioxide-infused water in high pressure tanks to neutralize the caffeine a method with no known adverse effects. Other companies, however, use chemical solvents like ethyl acetate or methylene chloride.
Ethyl acetate is derived from fruit and is therefore considered natural, but evidence suggests that high doses can nonetheless harm the central nervous system, liver and kidneys. Its unlikely that the ethyl acetate left over on decaffeinated tea leaves would meet a dangerous threshold, and this substance is considered safe by the FDA, but its nonetheless a risk factor regular tea drinkers should be aware of.
Methylene chloride, on the other hand, is a greater cause for concern. This chemical is also found in paint removers, pharmaceuticals, and aerosols, and is considered a potential carcinogen by OSHA, the federal agency for occupational health and safety. Like many potentially harmful additives, the FDA permits it in small amounts. But again, small amounts can add up over time if you plan to consume decaffeinated tea daily.
To completely avoid the risks associated with these chemicals, the best course of action is to opt for herbal teas that naturally contain no caffeine.

No matter the time of the day, I can never resist a good cup of hot tea.
Sometimes, that fondness for tea costs me dearly because sometimes Ill drink a strong cup of Earl Grey right before bed and end up being wide awake until early in the morning.
Teas with different caffeine levels can affect people differently though, but for me, I do my best to keep my chest of caffeine-free loose leaf tea well-stocked.
While most of the following teas are technically not true teas from the camellia sinensis plant, they are nonetheless considered teas by a lay person.

Caffeine Content In Traditional Tea Types
While herbal teas tend to be either caffeine-free or contain quite a high amount of caffeine, traditional teas have varying levels.
Green teas, for example, contain 28mg per 8oz serving on average9, while your usual morning black tea contains 47mg. The caffeine content of white tea, oolong, pu-erh and other more obscure tea types fall around these levels too.
Then there are decaffeinated teas. The key difference between caffeine-free herbal teas and decaffeinated teas is that decaf teas still have caffeine! Even after the tea leaves have been decaffeinated, there’s still a very small amount of caffeine left. This is usually only a milligram or two and not enough for you to feel the effects of caffeine.

Cocoa has caffeine too, and although delicious, herbal teas with cocoa might not be so innocent if you want to avoid caffeine.

How Much Caffeine Is In A Chai Tea Latte
As with chai tea, the answer to this question depends on similar factors. I couldnt find a definitive answer to this question, but have read estimates between 30 mg to 50 mg of caffeine in an 8-ounce cup.
If the chai tea latte is made with regular black tea, then its caffeine concentration relies on the type of black tea, how its brewed, the ratio of ingredients, and the size of the drink.
However, many chai tea lattes are made from concentrates, which make things more complicated. Others are made from powders, which tend to have more caffeine than concentrates.
As an example, the short chai tea latte at Starbucks has 50 mg of caffeine . My understanding is that their chai tea comes as a concentrate of tea and spices.
Is There A Decaffeinated Black Tea
Black tea does come in decaffeinated options. Decaffeinating your tea can significantly reduce the caffeine content. This is good for people who love to drink a lot of tea and also want to cut back on their caffeine intake.
- Methylene chloride removes the caffeine by soaking the tea leaves in water. Methylene chloride is then added directly to the water which absorbs most of the caffeine.
- Ethyl acetate uses the same procedure as methylene chloride to extract the caffeine. Although, this is considered a more natural way because ethyl acetate is found in tea leaves. Using this method sometimes leaves a chemical taste to decaffeinated black tea.
- Carbon dioxide is also known as a natural method to decaffeinate black tea. It is also one of the best ways because it keeps all the tea flavor and health benefits. With this method, the tea leaves are steamed rapidly with carbon dioxide. The gas absorbs the caffeine molecules and removes them from the tea.
- Water processing is not a common way of removing caffeine from tea. The tea leaves are soaked in hot water for a long time and then passed through a carbon filter to remove the caffeine. Then the water is returned to the tea to soak up the tea flavor and oils. This makes the flavor of the tea a little weak when compared to the other methods.
