How Long Does It Take To Harvest Tea Leaves

Even though it can take your tea plant up to three years to mature and produce a crop, you can still cultivate and take care of a tea plant in your own backyard garden. Tea plants, which are indigenous to the majority of the tropical parts of the world, do well in warm temperatures and may be grown continuously if the environment is favorable.

Tea Companies To Seek Out

With all that in mind, here are some of my favorite online sources for tea. The list is by no means comprehensiveâthere are many, many shops out thereâand its certainly shaped by my personal tastes. But taken together, these 15 companies cover a wide range of tea styles and origins.

Song Tea: Peter Luongs San Francisco tea company is pretty new. So much so that he hasnt set up an online store yet. You have to visit his website, download a PDF tea list, and call to make an order. Is the tea worth the fuss? Absolutely. Luongs Chinese and Taiwanese list commands high prices, but he doesnt sell anything less than beautiful, resonant tea in styles from green to oolong to black. His 2014 Dragon Well was some of the best Ive ever had: brilliantly green with several dimensions of nuttiness beyond the usual chestnut. A Taiwanese black tea called Twenty One suggests cherries soaked in whiskey, and a Gold Peony white tea is impressively crisp with citrus and honey notes.

Ippodo: Ippodo has been selling tea in Kyoto since the 1700s, and their selection of Japanese greens is excellent. Their matcha varies by season the current New Year matcha is intensely nutty with a prolonged sweetness. Sencha offerings are listed from rich to light, and the richest, the Kaboku, is precisely structured with a remarkable seaweed kick and subtle sweetness. And dont miss the Kanro Gyokuro, which is astonishingly intense and sweet, a thick, soupy brew with a prolonged finish.

A Window Into A Gilead Cancer Drug Trial

Enhance, a clinical trial of Gileads cancer drug magrolimab, is a key study to watch this year. On Monday, CEO Dan ODay gave an update on its progress, albeit a brief one.

Independent data monitors have given a green light for the study, which involves patients with myelodysplastic syndrome, to continue. That declaration means theyve seen no major safety concerns a notable finding given earlier safety-related delays and that treatment hasnt proven to be futile. Yet progression without a readout is also suggestive that the benefit observed to date, if any, is not strong enough for the data monitors to halt the trial. The next interim analysis will come in the second half of 2023.

Magrolimab came into Gileads pipeline as part of a $5 billion acquisition of the biotech Forty Seven. Its success will signal whether that was money well spent.

Elsewhere in Gileads business, company executives predicted steady growth through 2030, driven by the HIV pill Biktarvy and the recently approved Sunlenca, a long-acting injectable drug for the virus. An important factor for that growth is a over the key active ingredient in Biktarvy and other major HIV drugs that pushes generic competition into the next decade. Perhaps related, the conferences hosting hotel was on Monday again the site of protests against the company. Jonathan Gardner

Camellia Sinensis: The Tea Plant

Understanding Tea with Don Mei

The process of harvesting the plant can have a significant impact on the resulting tea. Typically, Camellia sinensis is grown in special tea gardens. The best tea gardens are found in cooler climates, where the Camellia sinensis thrives if left alone, this remarkable plant can grow to 30 feet tall. Tea growers keep their gardens cut back to improve the taste of the tea and make the harvesting process easier. During the harvest season, the finest teas are hand-picked by tea experts who know how to choose the best tea leaves. For finer teas, this means sticking exclusively to the two uppermost tea leaves, along with leaf buds located at the tips of the stems.

What Is The Tea Leaf Plant

Traditional Loose Tea and Tea Bags both come from the same place: The Camellia sinensis plant. This is either an evergreen shrub or a small tree able to grow up to six metres tall. The leaves are elliptic, bright-green and shiny with slightly hairy undersides. They are minutely serrated at the edges, with each tooth curving partially inwards. And when brewed, they boast a character unlike any other.

However, the term Leaf Tea is no longer exclusive to this plant. Countless types of Herbal and Fruit Tea, too, despite not coming from Camellia sinensis, have adopted the honorary title. The technical term for them is Tisanes, but few people use the word. The rule of thumb is that, if it doesnt come in our Plastic Free Tea Bags, it is almost certainly classified as a Loose Tea today.

Multiuse Green Tea Loose Leaf 500 gm: Buy Multiuse Green Tea Loose Leaf ...

So youve fallen in love with tea. Youve learned how to tell your high mountain oolongs from your shade-grown gyokuro. Now youre ready to buy some tea of your own.

Whenever I buy tea these days, I think back to a story from Verdant Teas David Duckler:

When I was studying tea, one tea master forced me to drink only the foulest, lowest grade tea he had until I could describe and appreciate its flavor, aroma, and texture. Only then was I allowed to drink the superior tea. If someone brings you an ordinary tea bag and you cant find anything good in it, thats your fault, not the teas fault.

Its a good reminder for tea lovers to not take themselves, or their tea, too seriously. Judging is easy. Appreciating is hard. And even seasoned experts have something to learn from tasting teas across a wide range of quality.

But when you want the good stuff, and youre willing to pay for it, you deserve to actually get it. This post is here to help you sort through the many, many tea sources out there to find one right for you.

But specialty tea is a niche market, and a good shop is hard to find, even in big cities like New York. So us tea-loving folk have to take to the internet to find our tea. Start searching for sources and youll get flooded by options at all kinds of price points, along with crowdsourced websites full of reviews.* Whos trustworthy? What tea is really worth the cost? Its often impossible to tell until its too late.

How Is Tea Made The Processing And Production Of True Teas

Whether you enjoy a refreshing, cold glass of iced tea or a warmed mug of hot tea, the production of this beverage makes all the difference when it comes to flavors and aromas. From harvest to drying, tea leaves undergo changes that can mean the difference between a delicate, sweet white tea and a robust, powerful black tea. The flavors and aromas you enjoy aren’t due to different leaves or plants in fact, these unique tea characteristics arise from the processing methods of the same tea leaves.

The tale of tea is a fascinating one, including proven health benefits, traditional uses in ceremonial practices, and a production process that exemplifies skill and artistry. Starting as a tiny seedling, the flavors and aromas of these tea leaves are affected by the region they are grown in, the amount of sunshine they receive and the careful eye of a storied tea master. Harvested by hand and skillfully manufactured in a multi-step process, the story of tea leaves has multiple outcomes, depending on which true tea type you prefer the most.

The Best Green Teas To Buy Overall

Ill begin with, my favorite online tea purchase.

If you love the taste of green tea, youll want a sencha. This Japanese green tea has the quintessential green tea flavor: grassy, crisp and clear.

The best value Ive found is Eisais Choice Sencha from Art of Tea.

The leaves are high quality, but the price is very reasonable, with a 4 oz. pouch going for $38, or 50 cents a cup .

If you prefer the slightly milder Chinese green teas, Id definitely go with a Dragon Well. It is the classic Chinese tea with a gentle, mellow flavor.

Once again, Art of Tea has the best value with their organic Dragon Well.

It costs a bit less than the sencha above, with an 4 ounce tin going for $30. One big problem with this tea, and any other good Dragon Well tea, is availability.

The Longjing region in the West Lake area of Hangzhou is very small, meaning that the years harvest sells out quickly. And once a store has sold all its stock, they wont be able to replenish it until the next year.

You can still find a lot of cheaper Dragon Well, but it will come from other regions and thus not be a true Dragon Well, even if it carries the name.

Teavivre has a good alternative if Art of Teas is sold out. Actually, make that a great alternative.

Their Organic Nonpareil Ming Qian Longjing is the best Dragon Well youll find outside of China.

Naturally, it is also much more expensive, costing over $80 for 200 grams of leaves.

Another great example of a Sencha green tea from Japan. Each brand has a slightly different flavor even within the same overall type of green tea.

Experimenting with different brands is a great way to find your favorite teas.

Sencha green tea is approachable to just about anyone. This is one of the reasons why it is so popular around the world. It has the delightful taste of green tea without some of the bitterness that can sometimes be associated with true teas in general.

The term flush refers to a few leaves, a portion of the stem, and the very tip.

Oriarm Chinese Longjing Dragon Well Green Tea Leaves

This tea is somewhat unique because it is pan-fried and comes in a long leaf rather than the smaller pieces you may find with other fresh green teas. It is handpicked and packaged whole, providing the best possible flavor.

Youll find that this tea is smooth with a bit of earthiness but also a fragrant and delicate aroma. It is excellent for hot or iced tea as well as being useful for more than one steep.

Its also picked right at the peak of the natural season to maintain the best flavor possible.
