How Much Green Tea

A number of studies have been conducted to test the theory that green tea can help with weight loss. Its important to note that most of these studies used green tea extract, not the actual tea.

Drinking regular green tea may not help you lose any weight, according to a clinical study published in the September 2012 issue of Obesity, which compared the effects of drinking regular green tea and a catechin-rich green tea on weight loss in a group of men and women with Type 2 diabetes.

While the group drinking catechin-rich tea lost a half-pound over the 12-week study period, the group drank a lower-catechin green tea gained half a pound.

Of the studies that show green tea might offer some weight loss benefits, the amount of weight lost isnt significant, according to a review study published in December 2012 in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

Is Green Decaffeinated Tea Good For You

It is true that this infusion isnt as nutritious as regular Green Tea. The reason is that the decaffeination process removes not only caffeine but also polyphenols and some antioxidants.

However, Decaffeinated Green Tea benefits the mind, body and soul in a plethora of ways all the same. The bottom line is that despite lacking the potency of, say, our Green Tea Bags, it still has much to offer.

Does Mega T Green Tea Work

I personally, would like to see a head-to-head comparison of the weight loss power between Mega T Green Tea and regular green tea . While I think for the most part, the ingredients in Mega T Green Tea are tame compared other products Ive reviewed previously, what I see about liver problems and fo ti, and gotu kola make me go hmmm.

What I did like about the Mega Tea website is that they emphasized the role of exercise and healthy foods and even stress reduction. I also liked that they said that taking more of the green tea supplement would not speed up weight loss. I suggest that people who take any medications or who have health issues see their doctor before using Mega T Green Tea. Write down the ingredients and show them to your doctor and let the doctor make the call on whether this green tea supplement is ok for you. Or just drink green tea instead.

Commercially Made Decaf Tea

To put this into perspective, you need to understand how decaffeinated tea is produced. Commercially, tea producers use a few different methods to extract caffeine. They involve complex processes that include ethyl acetate, carbon dioxide , or methylene chloridedont worry, the tea leaves are rinsed thoroughly after each. With the first two methods, the finished teas are 99.6 percent caffeine-free.

That’s some pretty heavy chemistry to get to a nearly caffeine-free product while still retaining the teas flavor. So now it may seem highly unlikely that simply running under hot water would perform the same task. Hot water alone cannot stand up to this measure it will leave some amount of caffeine and severely degrade the taste.

How Is Tea Decaffeinated

A common misconception is that Decaffeinated Loose Tea is 100% void of the stimulant. No type of Decaf Tea nor decaffeination method is that efficient, though some processes come close. There are four primary ways to extract caffeine, two of which we use here at The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company. The other two dont meet our high standards. They are the following:

Methylene Chloride Process

This is the most widespread means of decaffeination in the industry. It involves a chemical called Methylene Chloride used as a solvent to extract the caffeine molecules. The result is the removal of around 96-97% of caffeine. However, while efficient, we dont consider it especially safe and, therefore, steer clear of it.

Ethyl Acetate Process

This is a chemical found naturally in several fruits. Some people suggest that it is better than Methylene Chloride when applied as a solvent. The trouble is that, while organic, it still, in rare instances, leads to health complications. We again avoid it despite its ability to remove 96-97% of caffeine content from Tea and Coffee.

Carbon Dioxide Process

This is the safest and most efficient method. It functions by using pressurised liquid Co2 to extract the small caffeine molecules. Best of all is the fact that the larger flavour molecules stay almost entirely intact. The process removes 96-98% of the stimulant, which is the highest amount you can expect from decaffeination.

It Can Relieve Stress

Both caffeinated and decaffeinated green teas contain theanine, a lovely little chemical which studies show may help you reduce mental stress. Pour out a cuppa, and relax!

Okay, lets go back to the debate. Weve already seen that decaf contains fewer antioxidants than caffeinated green tea so why bother drinking it?

Well, the good news is that it isnt all bad!

Its true that the decaffeination process removes some antioxidants, as well as other healthy chemical compounds known as flavanols. But it doesnt remove all of them. And some is better than none, right?

According to a 2003 study, antioxidant levels ranged from:

  • 728 to 1,686 Trolox equivalents per gram in regular tea
  • 507 to 845 Trolox equivalents per gram in decaf

So its a reduction, but youre still getting a nice bounty of antioxidants in your mug.

Its also worth remembering that caffeine slightly raises blood pressure, so if thats something youve been having issues with, a switch to decaf can actually be better for you than drinking caffeinated green tea!

The Story Behind Decaf Earl Grey Tea

The history of Loose Leaf Decaffeinated Earl Grey Tea starts with its caffeinated counterpart. Legend has it that Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey, had travelled to China on a diplomatic mission when he saw a boy drowning in a river.

He or one of his men waded in to save the child. When the boys father heard about what happened, he gifted the Earl with Black Tea scented with bergamot oil or so the tale goes.

The truth is that Lord Grey made no such trip to China, and, as a result, the story is wholly unfounded. How, exactly, it came into existence remains a mystery.

What we know with certainty is that a German scientist called Friedrich Ferdinand Runge was the man who first identified caffeine in the 1820s. The word caffeine, in fact, is the combination of the German kaffee and the French café.

Say Yes To A Healthy Heart And New Beginnings

All cholesterols are not bad, especially the ones induced through green tea. Green tea does not introduce any new cholesterol in our body but helps slow the decrease of HDL-C cholesterol. This keeps your heart healthy and promotes good health.

The decaf version of green tea overpowers the caffeine-laden tea since it does not reduce any antioxidants in the body, which helps to utilize the benefits derived from green tea fully.

There are numerous benefits of decaffeinated green tea which outshines the caffeine-loaded green tea in many different ways. But if you are planning to Decaf your green tea, we might make you consider this option twice. So here are the reasons we believe that home decaf might not be the best way to have your favorite tea stress-free.

  • The hot water rinse might get not only rid of caffeine but also several other nutrients essential present in the green tea.
  • The flavor is highly compromised, making it just a bland and soggy mix of leaves and some color.
  • Some of the caffeine might get reduced, but leaving the tea in boiling water varies, which is not long enough to make a significant difference in the caffeine level.

Usually, commercially available green teas are soaked in ethyl acetate, which is generally considered naturally decaffeinated. However, organic green Matcha uses organic and safer methods to remove caffeine while keeping its flavor intact.

Caffeine Free Vs Decaf Teas

How To Decaffeinate Any Coffee – The Decaf Pouch by Decafino

You may ask, if there are naturally caffeine free teas, why would you choose a decaf tea instead? The answer is simple because of flavor and benefits. All decaf teas are made from Camellia sinensis tea plant. This plant has a unique chemical composition. White, yellow, green, oolong, black and dark teas are all made from Camellia sinensis plant, but undergo different growing, harvesting and processing methods which will ultimately change the chemical composition of tea leaf too.

Thats why some teas are richer in caffeine, some are richer in EGCg, a potent catechin that may provide numerous health benefits, and some may have high L-theanine content. For example, both EGCg and L-theanine are abundant only in Camellia sinensis. If you want to include EGCG into your diet, white and green tea will be the best teas to drink. They both contain caffeine, sometimes even more than black tea. But if you choose a naturally caffeine free tea such as rooibos, it wont contain any caffeine, but you wont be getting any EGCG either. Rooibos, however, has different antioxidants, that may provide a myriad of benefits too.

Thats why decaffeination is important. Decaf teas will still provide health benefits, but with a negligible amount of caffeine.

This tea surprisingly strong for a decaf. I like a strong tea. If you dont, you can probably use less to make it weaker. The leaves are in big pieces, not a powder like most tea. It doesnt filter through my strainer like a lot of loose teas do. It has a nice oolong flavor.

This organic decaffeinated oolong tea is semi-fermented and has a delicious flavor with a slightly roasted taste. It is decaffeinated using pressurized carbon dioxide which is considered one of the safest method and also most successfully preserves the flavor and antioxidants. One teaspoon was sufficient for brewing an 8 ounce cup and I let it steep for 5 minutes. To estimate shelf-life, the Best By date on the re-sealable pouch is two years in the future, but dates will vary. Excellent.

  • Make Your Own Decaf Green Tea

You can also remove a considerable amount of the caffeine from green tea by just pouring out the first infusion.

A study published in the Food Research International Journal found that dumping your first 5 minute infusion will reduce the caffeine content in your second steep by roughly 70%. This is because caffeine dissolves quicker than the other compounds found in green tea.

Youll lose quite a bit of the flavor and some of the beneficial catechins, but youll still get a delicious cup of tea with far less caffeine.
