Spearmint Tea For Hormonal Acne

Does The Spearmint Tea Or Infused Mint Water Work For Everyone

I Drank Spearmint Tea For 30 Days To Heal Hormonal Acne| Before and After

No. Unfortunately theres isnt one remedy that works for everyone.

But its worth trying.

I recommend trying the spearmint tea or infused spearmint water for 2-4 weeks.

Be consistent. Drink it every day.

If your skin doesnt improve or start clearing up in 2-4 weeks, then stop the mint tea/water. Youve given it a good amount of time to know its not the right remedy for you.

If your skin does start clearing up, then continue drinking the mint tea/water until all blemishes and acne are clearing up. Once everything is fading and healing, you can stop the mint water or tea.

Is It Safe To Drink Mint Water Or Spearmint Tea For Acne While Pregnant Or Breastfeeding

I dont recommend drinking mint water or spearmint tea while pregnant. Theres no evidence whether its safe or not, but it is an herb. Best to be cautious and avoid it.

As for while breastfeeding, large amounts of spearmint and peppermint tea can decrease your milk supply. Best to wait until youve stopped breastfeeding or are weaning.

Does Spearmint Tea Work For Acne

It likely depends on the person, but it shows promise. In a 2015 study by the American Academy of Dermatology, two cups of organic spearmint tea ingested daily reduced inflammatory acne lesions by 25 percent after one month and by 51 percent after three months, notes Thornfeldt. “When compared with 100 milligrams of prescription minocycline taken once daily, after three months of use, minocycline reduced the number of acne lesions by 52 percent, but it caused side effects in about 20 percent of the patients. Spearmint tea induced no side effects,” Thornfeldt says.

Chen adds, “Research proposes that spearmint tea has anti-androgenic properties, meaning that with acne, the effects of anti-androgens include reduced sebum production.” This can be a good thing for those with acne-prone skin since excess sebum can result in clogged pores, oily complexions, and you guessed it: breakouts. Yet, despite spearmint tea’s health claims, Chen admits that there’s still more to be discovered if we’re to understand exactly how spearmint tea affects the skin. “I would say that research indicates some health benefits associated with drinking spearmint tea, however, additional research is needed into some of its properties to claim if drinking spearmint tea is the be-all-end-all remedy for acne,” she says.

Spearmint Tea For Acne: What Does Science Say

Spearmint tea is not directly linked to acne reduction. However, its anti-androgen properties may help control hormonal acne.

Spearmint tea is a common herbal remedy in the Middle East for hirsutism in females. It is a natural anti-androgen and can reduce testosterone levels in the body. Androgens like testosterone are linked to the overproduction of sebum, , . Excess sebum clogs the skin pores, trapping dirt and bacteria, and causes acne.

Though testosterone is a male sex hormone, the ovaries may produce it in small amounts. Drinking spearmint tea reduces testosterone levels, thus regulating excess sebum production. This property may help reduce acne, especially if it is caused by hormonal fluctuations.

Further research is required to establish the efficacy of spearmint tea for acne. Its acne-reducing benefits are primarily anecdotal, and many people have tried this remedy and found it to be effective.

However, note that spearmint tea may not work for hormonal acne caused by hormones like insulin.

Spearmint tea is one of the most potent of all mints and is known for other benefits. Let us take a look at them.

The Link Between Spearmint Tea And Hormonal Acne

Acne is very much associated with androgens such as testosterone. A recent study found that out of 207 female participants with acne, 72% had increased levels of androgens.

High levels of androgens can cause excess sebum, colonization of acne-causing bacteria, and may disrupt the skin shedding process.

Which is a recipe for acne.

Spearmint tea might help reduce acne in those with testosterone-driven acne by reducing levels of excess androgens. Spearmint tea might also help fight acne-causing bacteria.

If your acne is not related to excess androgens, itâs not likely spearmint tea can help. You might be better suited for prescription retinoid treatments.

If youâve consistently tried everything over the counter for your acne, and you still deal with deep and sore acne breakouts — itâs possible that itâs related to hormones.

While the anti-androgen properties of spearmint tea are nowhere near as effective or reliable as prescription anti-androgens, this alternative route might be a good option for some.

Is It Safe For Men To Drink Spearmint Water Or Spearmint Tea For Acne

Men need to be cautious with spearmint tea because it lowers testosterone.

But, some men have too much testosterone, and that could be what is causing acne.

My recommendation for men wanting to try the mint water or spearmint tea for acne is to drink it for 2 weeks. If you dont see improvement in your skin, then stop.

If during those 2 weeks you see improvements in your skin, then continue until your skin clears up. Once your skin is clear, then stop drinking it.

I recommend cycling it. Drink it when you have breakouts, and stop when your skin is clear. Dont continuously drink it.

Reddit Users Claim Drinking Spearmint Tea Can Cure Acne

I know I’m not alone when I say this, but when a breakout pops up uninvited, I will do virtually anything in an attempt to get it gone, stat. Slather on a clay-based face mask? Been there. Dab on a medicated spot treatment? Done that. But what I haven’t tried is something so far left field it might just work: sipping a steaming cup of spearmint tea.

Recently, the people of the Internet have been praising the benefits of spearmint tea in the SkincareAddiction sub-Reddit forum, and how just a few cups of the antioxidant-packed stuff over time has the power to drastically clear up breakouts. “Can we talk about spearmint? I know this has been brought up before but most of the posts I see are not from people who have tried it. I have been drinking 1 cup of spearmint tea every evening for several months and the results are incredible,” wrote Redditor lizparade. Interestingly, quite recently, so it could be where our friends at Reddit got the idea.

“I have not had a single zit which confirms that my acne is hormonal,” the writer continued. “I have tried researching this further but there is very limited information and most of it has to do with treating polycystic ovarian syndrome which I do not have. In my understanding, it reduces androgens circulating in the blood and probably is not helpful to men.”

May Lower Insulin Levels

If youve checked out our guide to hormonal acne, youll probably remember that insulin, not testosterone, is the biggest hormone behind adult acne.

When the body releases too much insulin, usually due to eating too many carbs, sugar, or dairy, a cascade of acne-causing hormones and compounds get released. Together, these compounds lead to the overproduction of skin cells and sebum oil, too many dead skin cells that wont shed properly, and inflammation. All of these factors play a part in creating acne.

One study found that insulin levels in diabetic rats were significantly lower when they supplemented with spearmint.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29769013 The study also found that spearmint had little effect on insulin for healthy rats, so take this research with a grain of salt.

Can This Spearmint Tea Acne Hack Really Help Hormonal Acne

Drinking a mug of spearmint tea as a hormonal acne remedy sounds too good to be true, right? Well, there is some promising research to support that daily consumption of spearmint tea might help curb androgen-related acne.

Hormonal acne is arguably the most infuriating type of acne because the root cause is an internal issue (versus a topical issue of either bacteria or oil.

Most commonly, hormonal acne is caused by having higher than normal androgen levels, or during fluctuation hormonal states like menstruation.

If your acne is hormone-related, spearmint tea might help treat it thanks to its anti-androgen properties.

Letâs consult the research, and answer the question âCan spearmint tea help clear your acne?â

Proposed Benefits For Acne Are Largely Anecdotal

Why Spearmint tea for hormonal acne is seriously underrated

The proposed benefits of spearmint tea for acne are mostly anecdotal from people who have tried the approach. Studies point to properties that could be skin-benefiting, but its hard to predict just how spearmint tea could affect the skin.

Botanical researchers have periodically examined the benefits of spearmint treatments to reduce a number of health conditions. Here are a few examples:

  • Reducing hirsutism in women with PCOS. An older 2010 study published in the journal
  • BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine found spearmint essential oil helped to reduce tumor cell viability. The researchers specifically applied spearmint oil to three tumor strains and determined there was a 50 percent reduction in cancerous cells. However, researchers havent studied this benefit in human subjects.

These are just some of the examples of potential spearmint benefits, but they arent widely researched on large populations of people.

Spearmint Tea For Hormonal Acne

Spearmint tea for hormonal acne is a natural way to deal with acne and breakouts. Its a natural tea that has powerful anti-acne properties.

The tea is made from spearmint leaf thats extracted through a process that removes the bitterness, so there is no bitterness for the tea. Its made from the sap of the spearmint tree, which is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia. It has a very calming and sedative effect on your skin.

Ive had the same tea for over a decade and still havent had any issues.

If you are looking for a natural tea for acne, spearmint tea is a great option. Its a tea that can be used in moderation, but in my experience, spearmint tea is best used in the morning to combat breakouts/acne. If youre suffering from any hormonal acne breakouts, you should definitely give spearmint tea a try.

Just 3 tablespoons of spearmint tea can cure a nasty hormonal acne breakout. It can be used to clean the pores and soothe any inflammation.

I have a feeling this is a pretty weak tea. It will have a strong flavor, but the aroma and taste will be a bit stronger than many other tea/tea blends.

A small amount of spearmint tea is ideal for acne breakout, but its a bit bitter and not very flavorful. Its not too bitter, but its a strong flavor for any acne breakout.

You can get spearmint tea at many natural food stores.

How Does Spearmint And Peppermint Help Treat Some Hormonal Acne

One of many hormones that are responsible for acne is a hormone known as DHT.

DHT is a specific male sex hormone that can be responsible for our body producing too much sebum oil. Too much sebum oil can lead to clogged pores, which can lead to an acne infection and inflammation .

The key thing to realize here is that these things only happen if our body is ill-equipped to handle this excess sebum oil. Sebum oil is a natural, necessary, healthy layer of protection for our skin. If we have enough antioxidants and oxidative stress resistance, sebum oil wont become infected or oxidized. If we have a properly functioning immune system, there wont be a massive inflammatory response that leads to a pimple. If these things are not the case, then excess sebum oil becomes an issue and DHT is problematic.

Both spearmint and peppermint tea have been shown to significantly decrease testosterone levels. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19585478https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15679984 This includes lower levels of DHT, the specific male sex hormone responsible for our bodys producing too much sebum oil. Excess sebum oil can clog pores, which again, as we said, may lead to acne.

Why Hormonal Acne Is More Than Just Sex Hormones

Starting spearmint tea for hormonal acne

Sex hormones naturally rise during puberty. In both males and females, levels of DHT will be at their height, which is a large part of the reason why acne is so common amongst teenagers.

Still, it begs the question why is acne still so common in the United States even after puberty? In my book Unmasking Acne, I reference two studies that drive this point home:

More than half the individuals with acne during puberty continue to have acne after puberty, and many people dont even start developing acne until adulthood . Even after sex hormone levels have died down, we still find ourselves with acne. Furthermore, despite rates of acne being higher than ever before, testosterone levels are actually lower than they were in previous decades .

Furthermore, why do certain cultures, like the Ache, Kitavan and Sapara, have rates of acne for adolescents near zero percent, despite the fact that their teenagers still go through puberty, still have fluctuating sex hormones, and still have high levels of DHT?

Its because sex hormones arent the only or even the main, component in hormonal acne dietary hormones, like insulin, IGF-1, and IGFBP-3 are.

I discuss this in much greater detail in Unmasking Acne, but the number one culprit of adult hormonal acne is not DHT, but insulin.

While DHT increases the amount of sebum oil on the skin, which simply makes someone more suspectable to acne, insulin directly triggers the root causes of acne:
