Ginger is all the rage in my apartment at the moment, from making homemade ginger chips to homemade ginger juice, and now this homemade ginger powder. This post takes you through two methods of drying and making ginger powder from fresh ginger and the leftover ginger pulp from juicing.
Recently I made a massive batch of Ginger Juice and was left with a big pile of leftover pulp. Now you know how much I try to avoid the unnecessary wasting of any ingredient. So, having already figured out that dehydrating is the key to using leftover nut milk pulp, I thought it would be the perfect answer to what to do with ginger pulp too.
In fact, following on from my Homemade Turmeric Powder post, I decided that Id try two methods for making organic ground ginger. The first method uses leftover ginger pulp, and the other one follows the same process as I used with the turmeric fresh, thinly sliced ginger. Im happy to say that the results have been amazing!

Ginger root tea is one of my absolute favorite drinks to make at homeand it doubles as a wellness tonic that costs merely cents and minutes to prepare. With just a small nub of fresh ginger root, water, and honey, you can make a potent tea that is both soothing and delicious.
According to WebMD, ginger helps to settle stomach aches and nausea, and it may also help alleviate symptoms from muscle pain, menstrual cramps, and respiratory ailments including asthma, coughs, and bronchitis. In addition to these wellness effects, I find that drinking ginger tea is simply soothing and invigorating, highly enjoyable and relaxing. And when made fresh, the tea can be extremely refreshing, having a very different quality of spunk and refreshment than tea made from dried ginger.
In order to make this tea successfully, the trick is to truly simmer the ginger root, not just steep it in hot water. Merely steeping ginger in hot water will give you little more than water with a tinge of ginger flavor. But in boiling the ginger, youre able to actually extract the flavor and essence of ginger right into the water, making a powerful and spirited tea.
Ginger Tea From Tea Bags Vs Fresh Roots
Now, youll find ginger in two main forms. First is the actual ginger root, which is not exactly attractive. Its got a gray-light brown peel on the outside, and the best way to remove it is with a potato peeler. Ignore the knots and harder bits.
If you use this version, you need to use about a heaping teaspoon per 8 oz of drink. In some other places youll read that you need about a thumb-sized piece, and peel and grate that.

The flavor from fresh ginger tea is always going to be great, since its got a bright, citrusy note to it as well.
The other form of ginger youll find if dried ginger root. This is usually in the form of cut up ginger, which has been intentionally dried out.
This changes the flavor of the gingerol, and may prove to be better at getting you a concentrated ginger flavor, and not necessarily very much spiciness.
And it also makes ginger root very easy to store, since fresh ginger doesnt last all that long, even in the fridge.
If you use ginger tea bags, youll find that they contain dried ginger. Which means the flavor will be a bit duller, and you might need to let them steep for a little longer. Always check the instructions on the tea box.
