Leaf Tea Buying Tips

Never judge a tea by appearance only. Descriptions are important, and so is the ingredients list. Sometimes, it may even be lifesaving. If you are allergic to nuts and unknowingly buy a tea with walnuts simply because you couldnt see any on the photo, this could have a serious impact on your health. Furthermore, some ingredients may interact with medicine, such as St. Johnt Wort.

Not all teas are the same. For example, Earl Grey loose leaf tea may be completely different from an Earl Grey tea bags from a supermarket. In fact, every tea shop is likely to have at least slightly different Earl Grey, or any other type of tea. When buying tea online, be prepared to receive a tea that is slightly different from expected or from the tea you tried before. Even the same tea type from the same shop will be slightly different each year. Experiment with brewing and learn what to do with the tea leaves you dont like.

Conventional Green Tea Bags Are Not Best In Quality

You should try to avoid green teas in normal tea bags even though they are cheap and convenient, since they are not the best in quality. These tea bags normally contain fannings or dusts, which are broken or small pieces of tea leaves treated as rejects of the manufacturing process while making high quality loose leaf tea grades.

Whole Leaf Vs Conventional Green Tea Bags

The essential oils evaporates from the these fragmented tea leaves during the manufacturing process of these teas. That is the reason you dont get the full flavour, taste and the health benefits when you use tea bags to brew your green tea.

These low quality teas have gained popularity in the developing countries, particularly because they are cheap and also convenient to put in normal tea bags. Of Course, tea dusts produce a very strong brew consequently more cups are obtained per measure of tea dust.

Unfortunately, tea dusts lack the subtlety, smoothness and completeness of whole leaf teas. Also, filter papers which are commonly used in these tea bags may not be very safe since they are known to be associated with potential health hazards.

Dont be put off by the jasmine teas you may have experienced in the past. Many of the jasmine green teas used in restaurants are of lower quality and steeped too briefly resulting in a cup the resembles a bland, watery perfume.

Made by one of the worlds most famous tea brands, this Twinnings green tea is made with the addition of jasmine blossom to give your cup a very delicate, slightly floral flavor that bears no resemblance to anything you have tried before.

The Most Convenient Place To Buy Green Tea

Virtually everyone has an account on Amazon, making it a convenient place to buy tea.

The main problem is the extremely large selection. Its nice to have options, obviously, but most of those options just arent very good. It can be hard to find the quality offerings among all the junk, but they are there.

For sencha, the best option is the excellent organic Sencha from Rishi tea. It is reasonably priced and a far better tea than you would expect to get for the cost.

For Dragon Well, try this organic tea from Golden Moon which is another great value buy.

Good gyokuro is almost impossible to find on Amazon, but there are two worth getting: the Imperial Gyokuro from Chado is expensive, but very high quality and Ochas organic gyokuro is not quite as high quality, but still very good and considerably less expensive.

What Is Green Tea

Can I Find TEA Plants? Garden Nursery Road Trip!

Green tea is made from the young leaves of Camellia sinensis plant and has a slightly bitter, astringent taste. The leaves are dried immediately after harvest, and then steamed or pan-fired. The dried leaves can be used to produce different varieties of tea. The young leaves are used for green tea, and the mature leaves are used for black tea. Green tea can be used for the production of white tea, yellow tea, oolong, and pu-erh tea. White tea is made from immature leaves and buds of the plant, and it is the least processed tea. Yellow tea is made from mature leaves and buds of the plant, and it has a milder flavor than green tea. You can learn more about green tea health benefits here .

So youve fallen in love with tea. Youve learned how to tell your high mountain oolongs from your shade-grown gyokuro. Now youre ready to buy some tea of your own.

Whenever I buy tea these days, I think back to a story from Verdant Teas David Duckler:

When I was studying tea, one tea master forced me to drink only the foulest, lowest grade tea he had until I could describe and appreciate its flavor, aroma, and texture. Only then was I allowed to drink the superior tea. If someone brings you an ordinary tea bag and you cant find anything good in it, thats your fault, not the teas fault.

Its a good reminder for tea lovers to not take themselves, or their tea, too seriously. Judging is easy. Appreciating is hard. And even seasoned experts have something to learn from tasting teas across a wide range of quality.

But when you want the good stuff, and youre willing to pay for it, you deserve to actually get it. This post is here to help you sort through the many, many tea sources out there to find one right for you.

But specialty tea is a niche market, and a good shop is hard to find, even in big cities like New York. So us tea-loving folk have to take to the internet to find our tea. Start searching for sources and youll get flooded by options at all kinds of price points, along with crowdsourced websites full of reviews.* Whos trustworthy? What tea is really worth the cost? Its often impossible to tell until its too late.

How Can I Buy Tea Leaves

The first and foremost rule is that the larger the leaf, the higher the quality and the better the flavour. Pale green teas will usually be lighter in terms of flavour, while the dark green colour may indicate a strong infusion. If a strong cup of tea is what, then choose broken leaves without a second thought.

How To Choose The Best Tea Type

How to make Soursop Tea (Where to Buy? What’s the Benefits?)

The biggest disadvantage of online tea shopping is not being able to smell the leaves or take part in tea tastings, but that can be a big advantage too.

Choosing the best tea type can be difficult even in the regular shop. Although scents may help in making a buying decision, they should rarely be the only factor. Unless, of course, tea smells divine. All leaves change scent after some time , and some are often different from the flavor. They may give you a very wrong idea on what to expect, regardless where you are buying your tea.

To minimize the risk of buying the wrong type, try to rely on the following factors.

Where To Buy Loose Leaf Tea

hey guys just need some advise. I would like to find a store to buy loose leaf herbal tea. Anyone have any suggestions? i live around the village

Cornelia Bean on Academy Road has a good selection.

Davids Tea quality is poor when compared to the established local stores. Chains like it are just not my cup of tea. I find the product at Cornelia Bean to be teariffic.

For sure. The Manitoba Rooibos from Cornelia has blueberries. A similar tea from Davids has blueberry flavoured raisins.

Daves Tea at Polo Park is where my wife gets hers.

Yes, this. They tend to lean towards flavoured teas though, so if you want more pure herbal teas, try Vita Health. In their tea section they have a little section for loose herbs like dandelion, chamomile, valerian, etc.

Tea Companies To Seek Out

With all that in mind, here are some of my favorite online sources for tea. The list is by no means comprehensiveâthere are many, many shops out thereâand its certainly shaped by my personal tastes. But taken together, these 15 companies cover a wide range of tea styles and origins.

Song Tea: Peter Luongs San Francisco tea company is pretty new. So much so that he hasnt set up an online store yet. You have to visit his website, download a PDF tea list, and call to make an order. Is the tea worth the fuss? Absolutely. Luongs Chinese and Taiwanese list commands high prices, but he doesnt sell anything less than beautiful, resonant tea in styles from green to oolong to black. His 2014 Dragon Well was some of the best Ive ever had: brilliantly green with several dimensions of nuttiness beyond the usual chestnut. A Taiwanese black tea called Twenty One suggests cherries soaked in whiskey, and a Gold Peony white tea is impressively crisp with citrus and honey notes.

Ippodo: Ippodo has been selling tea in Kyoto since the 1700s, and their selection of Japanese greens is excellent. Their matcha varies by season the current New Year matcha is intensely nutty with a prolonged sweetness. Sencha offerings are listed from rich to light, and the richest, the Kaboku, is precisely structured with a remarkable seaweed kick and subtle sweetness. And dont miss the Kanro Gyokuro, which is astonishingly intense and sweet, a thick, soupy brew with a prolonged finish.

The Cheapest Loose Leaf Teas

California Tea House sells a lot of low priced teas. The quality is obviously lower as well, but for certain uses, it makes a lot of sense to get a lower priced tea and save some money.

For instance, if you just want some green tea to fill up a thermos, a lower quality leaf will do just fine. Similarly, if you like to add sugar or other things to your tea, there is no reason to pay for the highest quality varieties.

When it comes to green tea, California Tea House have an organic Sencha that is only $15 for 4 ounces. They also have a Dragon Well, but it costs far too much to be worth it.

Alternatively, you could try some of the cheaper options on Amazon. I havent tried any myself, so I cant give you any advice. Chances are youll end up with a horrible tea, but you wont spend much to get it, so it might be worth trying a few until you hit the jackpot.

If youve been asking yourself, Where can I buy green tea? I hope I was able to offer some good suggestions to get you started. If you want more info on which green tea brands are best, try this article.

If you dont have a teapot with a built in infuser, the easiest way to get started with loose leaf tea is to just get a stainless steel tea infuser basket or similar loose tea strainer that you can use with any mug you already have, or one of these mugs with infuser.
