Myth #: Silver Needle Is A Delicate Tea That Needs Cooler Water To Brew
So the idea here is that the young buds are so delicate and fragile that theyd be scorched by boiling water. For example, I was told to brew my first Silver Needle at 85°C , and so I did for a long, long time.
To the contrary though. By natures design, tea buds are tender but tough, and the protective fuzz on the tea buds helps repel water to some extent so we need to use hot water and a bit of force to extract the goodness inside.
So unless you have a broken up Silver Needle, no more of this tepid, wimpy water for white teas. OK?
Well talk more about brewing later. But now that we got those myths out of the way, we have a better shot at REALLY getting to know this tea.
And boy is it worth it. From what Ive seen, delicate Silver Needle can come in a surprising range of flavors: some are light and floral with some vanilla ice cream vibes, while others are more wild, herbaceous, and downright zesty!

I find that good porcelain heightens the aroma of the tea, adds texture, and doesnt take away from the high notes all of which I want to do for a Silver Needle. Gaiwans give you sooooo much control over the tea and you can still take off the lid to show off the tea during brewing if youd like.
I find that super porous clay pots dont do so well for Silver Needle. These pots often do better with teas that need some chillin out: like roasted oolongs with too much roast, or puerh with a bit of an edge. Silver Needle sometimes need some help to shine, so Id be careful to choose a clay that enhances aroma and high notes.

What makes white tea unique is the processing method. Tea leaves are very lightly processed. For example, green tea includes a step kill green to stop the oxidation and preserve color and nutrients and black tea is fully oxidized. Processing of green and black tea includes other steps too, such as rolling and shaping the tea leaves. White tea is different.
To make white tea, leaves are only withered and dried. This type of tea, even though its very light in color, is actually lightly oxidised because the oxidation starts immediately after the leaves are harvested. In general, more oxidised teas will have a darker and stronger color and flavor. Although the process of making this type of tea sounds easy, it takes a lot of knowledge and attention to result in leaves with beautifully preserved color, nutrients and freshness.
What Is White Tea Made Of
Just like any other real tea, its made from Camellia sinensis. Camellia sinensis is a tea plant used for making all real teas white, yellow, green, oolong, black and dark. Production Of Silver Needle Ceylon Tea
Producing Silver Needle Ceylon Tea is not everyones cup of tea. It requires expertise, patience and a great deal of effort.
The special cultivar gives long and premium apical buds and leaves which are dark green in colour. The unopened buds are coated with fine, silvery down.
Silver Needle Ceylon Tea grows at most of the elevations and flushes plentifully under the hot, wet, and steamy conditions. The bush remains like a tapered bowl and does not spread its branches easily. It can grow up to 60 feet if left untended and requires pruning at short intervals from 4 years in the high and 2 years in the lower areas.
These white tea bushes do not yield high in comparison to other teas. An expert tea picker usually picks around 250 gram of silver tips in a day. It takes about 5 KG of freshly picked tips to produce just one kilo of Silver Needle Ceylon Tea. The fine and sensitive buds need to be picked with special proficiency at just the right maturity, and they are then carefully protected to prevent bruising. These buds are plucked in dry weather and the harvested buds are spread out on a wooden or natural cane surface and dried under the filtered sunlight of the dawn. This whole process is done under intense scrutiny, for a short time each day for about 4 or 5 days. This is the best method to wither the tea but sometimes when the weather is not suitable, this process is done indoors with artificial warmth.

What About Silver Needle From Other Regions
Yes: other regions DO produce bud-only white teas. But the big question is are they technically Silver Needle?
Silver Needle is translated from the Chinese name bai hao yin zhen, literally white pekoe silver needles.
And more than just a bud-only pluck, bai hao yin zhen implies that the tea is made from the specific cultivars in Fujian that gave rise to the tea in the first place, along with the exact processing steps and growing environment that exists there.
So its arguable that bud-only white teas from anywhere else should be called Silver Needle, too. Technically, they should have their own names: unique area = unique taste = deserves a unique name, right?

Even visually, the thin buds of this Nepalese white tea on the right tell us that theyll taste much different than the Chinese Silver Needle.
And thats not a bad thing: that means that its really distinct Nepalese white tea, and not just an off-brand version of a Chinese white tea. I certainly think that deserves its own name!
