Making A Classic Hot Latte
Similar to the iced latte, you’ll add 1/2 cup concentrate to 1/2 cup of milk of your choice. You can add this directly to a mug, stir, and heat in the microwave for about 2 minutes for a hot latte. Time depends on your microwave strength, so test the latte at 30 second intervals to ensure you don’t roast it .
For one latte I don’t typically heat my mixture on the stove, but if you’re making a larger batch the stove works better than individually heating up 8 lattes.
How To Make A Matcha Green Tea Latte Step By Step
Warm 2 cups of almond milk on the stove or in the microwave until it reaches your desired temperature. You dont want it too hot
I usually heat my almond milk in a saucepan on high for 4 minutes.
Pour into a blender, preferably one of those single-serving cups. I have a Ninja blender and love it!
Note: If you dont have a blender , you can put all the ingredients in a tightly capped Mason jar and shake well.
Add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 to 1 teaspoon matcha green tea powder .
And 3-5 drops of stevia.
Blend for 3-5 seconds, just enough to get a bit of froth on the top.
Open the lid slowly as the pressure can cause the hot liquid to splash out.Pour into a mug and enjoy.
One batch equals two servings, but I readily admit to drinking both servings each morning.
What Is In A Iced Green Tea Latte From Starbucks
If you take a look at the ingredients, there are only three: milk, ice, and matcha blend. After the matcha tea blend ingredient, the list reads, Sugar, ground Japanese Green tea. Think about it this way: When referencing the matcha powder, Starbucks acknowledges that its made of nothing but powder and sugar.

I love this drink sooooooo matcha!
Okay, thats it for the matcha puns. I promise.
Im a simple gal when it comes to my caffeine drinks and generally not a lover of crazy coffee drinks or over the top Starbucks creations.
However, I fell in love with this drink many years ago when I worked for a production company here in Los Angeles. Ive never been able to shake my love for it.
These days I make it at home several times per week.
Its super easy to make and all you need is milk , matcha powder, and vanilla syrup.
I make mine a little fancy by using this vanilla bean simple syrup. Starbucks uses this vanilla syrup.

I personally prefer the caffeine buzz I get from matcha versus coffee. No jitters and Im more focused. Some people even use it as a dietary aide because it suppresses your appetite.
To mix the green tea latte, I like to use my handheld milk frother. It is hands done one of my favorite kitchen tools that cost less than $10. I also used it to make my Lucky Charms Cereal Milk Latte.
If you dont have one, mixing with a regular ol spoon works great.
Update: Im adding a few tips and techniques that can help you make your matcha lump free!

Matcha Green Tea Latte Ingredients
The first and most important ingredient is matcha green tea powder. This is my favorite brand though Ive also used this one with great results.
This is the stevia I use.
A Note on Sweetener
About the sweetener: you will need something because matcha green tea is very bitter. I never sweeten my drinks, but even I have to have a little sweetener to combat the bitterness.
Ive tried different types of unrefined sweeteners in this matcha green tea latte recipe, including maple syrup and honey, but I always come back to the stevia drops. The stevia seems to pair the best with the matcha green tea, adding a subtle sweetness without taking anything away from the delicious green tea flavor.
Heat And Froth The Milk
You can heat the milk in the microwave or in a small saucepan on the stovetop. You, ideally, dont want to heat the milk above around 160ºF/70ºC. Once again, if the milk is too hot then it will lead to bitter matcha.
If you dont have a thermometer, then simply heat the milk till it simmers but has yet to boil. Once heated, you can froth the milk

How Do I Mix The Water And Matcha
This question is often overlooked by many matcha latte recipes. Our preferred method is to make a thick matcha shot by first mixing the matcha and water. You can either do this in the cup you will use for your latte, or mix them separately and add it in later.
If you want to create the layered effect in your matcha latte, add sweetener to the bottom layer . The sweetener will make the milk heavier and help to keep separate from the matcha layer when you pour it in.
What you really want to do is break up clumps of matcha. Most places recommend sifting the matcha first. That works, but our preference is to use a different bamboo whisk for the task. If you dont own a bamboo whisk, a battery operated milk frother may also help to whip matcha and water into an even mixture. It may be tempting to use a fork, but this just creates more problems.
If youre going to make matcha latte in a taller glass, you may want to invest in a bamboo whisk with a longer handle. These are smaller, and the longer handle allows you to whisk matcha and water efficiently in a glass.

Matcha Green Tea Health Benefits
A matcha green tea latte, for all intents and purposes, isnt all that much different health-wise than a regular espresso latte made with coffee. The matcha one will likely have less caffeine, and any of the other health benefits of green tea, depending on whether you subscribe to the health claims of tea or not. As usual, we recommend to drink tea because you enjoy it, not for any particular benefits health wise and definitely not to replace a visit to the doctor if somethings wrong.

Making A Latte With Matcha
Bring a cup of water to a boil, pour it into a mug, and add approximately a 4 tsp of matcha green tea powder. You can add a little more than you normally would, since the milk is going to be diluting the flavor. Some people prefer a stronger matcha taste, others dont so make this a couple times and really dial in your recipe.
While the pot is still warm from boiling the water, I add milk and slightly reduce the temperature on the stove.
Meanwhile, I use a little power-whisk like the one pictured above to quickly mix the green tea powder with the water.
Now its time to froth the milk. I use about a cup. Careful not to hit the sides of your pan, especially if it has a special coating. Once it starts to steam a bit, and youve got a nice light froth going, carefully pour the milk into the cup with the matcha. Try to save the bubblier part of the froth on top to put on top of your drink, you can use a spoon or something to hold it in place while the more-liquid milk pours out beneath it and into your cup.
You can sweeten it however youd like, sometimes Ill mix a syrup in while Im frothing the milk. Alternatively, you can get flavored and pre-sweetened matcha powders as well.
Can I Add Or Replace Some Ingredients
Yes, you can add or replace some of the ingredients in this recipe. For example, if you dont have matcha powder, you can use green tea bags or leaves. If you dont have milk, you can use water or other milk like soy milk, oat milk, etc.
You can also sweeten this latte with sugar, agave nectar, or another sweetener. And finally, if you dont have vanilla extract, you can use vanilla bean paste or powder.

It feels like a special treat, before diving into the hurried tasks of midday. However, the cost adds up very quickly! I soon came to realize that I can actually buy 1-2 packages of good quality matcha green tea powder at the same cost as 2 cups of Green Tea Latte at Starbucks. Now, I am embarrassed to tell you that my pantry has been stocked up with many matcha green tea powder packages already. I use the powder for many of my green tea baked goods, but it just never crossed my mind to use it for my daily cup of latte.
Once I started making a matcha green tea latte at home, I know I am onto an afternoon ritual that will last for a long time. Stirring the lovely green hue in a cup has the effect of calming my mind, allowing me to take a mental break on a busy day. Its therapeutic almost. Unlike espresso, you dont need any special machine to make the latte all you need is milk and matcha green tea powder.
The slightly bitter and sweet taste of matcha, when blending in with milk and a tiny bit of sugar, it makes the perfect cup of drink. On a chilly day, the warm latte tastes extra good as I take slow sips from the cup. If you prefer the iced version of the matcha green tea latte, it is as easy as using cold milk and adding in ice cubes.
