I fell in love with the idea of chai through the cartons of this drink mix from the grocery store. The milky sweetness partnered with the astringent black tea drew me in, but the warm spices that lingered between sips kept me drinking. It wasnt long before the sweetness of those chai drink mixes became too much for me and I started experimenting with chai lattes at home.

This chai latte gives you complete control over your chai latte experience, from the tea and the spices, to the sweetener and type of milk. The result is a creamy cup of black tea subtly spiced and fragrant with cinnamon, black pepper, and ginger, and just the right amount of sweetness, so near perfect that youll skip the coffee shop chai and come home to make a pot of this at tea time.

What Spices Are In Chai Tea

Chai tea typically has a black tea base and a blend of warm spices such as:

    • Cardamom
    • Cloves
    • Ginger

When you order a chai tea latte at a coffee shop they typically use an already brewed chai tea. Our favorite is Gray Duck Chai , not only because it is Minnesota brewed, but because its the perfect balance of spicy + sweet.

Instead of using an already brewed chai tea, we steep our own black tea and use our DIY Chai Spices to make the perfect at-home chai tea latte. Heck yes, we make our own chai tea spices.

How To Start And What To Get

While Masala Chai might seem complicated it’s actually far from it. According to Feasting at Home, authentic Chai starts with four simple ingredients: Black tea, Chai spices, milk, and a sweetener. While it might sound a bit counterintuitive to start off with a black tea, it’s really the type of base that Chai requires. In this case, the balance makes sense thanks to the fact that black tea is hearty enough and strong enough to hold up to all of the bold, heavy spices that are used in the preparation of the tea.

If it weren’t for the neutral yet strong flavor profile of black tea, Chai wouldn’t have the same flavor or come across nearly as uniform. For some tea makers, this base can be as personal as a locally-grown tea leaf or a specific blend of black teas to create a unique and intimate flavor base that’s one of a kind. This is also where those at home can have fun with tea creation – if you have a favorite type of black tea, this is the time to experiment and determine which will build the best flavor profile for your personal tastes.
