Flavored Iced Tea Recipes

How To Flavor Tea
  • 4 tea bags or 4 teaspoons loose leaf tea
  • 4 cups tap or room temperature water
  • FOR ADDING FLAVORS, CHOOSE FROM:
  • 1/2 cup fruit jam or preserves
  • 1 cup fruit juice/drink
  • 1/3 cup thawed frozen juice/drink concentrate
  • spices
  • sprig of fresh herbs , chopped
  • 1 teaspoon extract
  • 2-4 tablespoons flavored syrups/sauces
  • additional sweeteners to taste, if desired
  • shot of alcohol per glass of flavored tea

Okay, I have to admit that I went a little overboard making up tea flavors for this post. As you will soon see for yourself, there is no limit to the number of different iced tea flavors you can invent. And it couldn’t be easier.

I made all of these teas with things that I had in my pantry and fridge. Seriously. I decided to see what I could create with simple ingredients I had on hand.

If you haven’t read my post How to Make Refrigerator Iced Tea, you need to understand that technique before trying the ideas in the post. That’s the method I used in making all of these teas. I simply added different flavors to my jars of refrigerator tea.

I will explain the ingredients I used in these categories:

  • jams and preserves

Jams and preserves: I discovered that these work great for flavoring tea. They’re packed with good fruity flavors and they add a touch of sweet to to the tea, too.

Want it sugar free? Easy. Use sugar free preserves or jams.

Effect Of Tea On Hepatotoxicity Of Insecticides

Cypermethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid used as an insecticide in large-scale commercial agricultural applications as well as in consumer products for domestic purposes. Induction of CYP system and oxidative stress has been implicated as the key mechanisms in the hepatotoxic effects of these insecticides. Preclinical studies have observed protective effects of BTE against hepatotoxicity of chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin.48 Administering aqueous BTE at a dose of 200 mg/mL to mice before the combination dose of chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin each) on alternate days over a 15-day period prevented and mitigated elevation in serum levels of enzymes ALP, AST, and ALT decreased hepatic antioxidant enzymes SOD, GPx, GR, GST, and CAT in liver and increased lipid peroxidation in liver, when compared with insecticide-alone treated cohorts.48

S Used To Flavour Ceylon Tea

While there are several ways of flavouring Ceylon Black Tea and Green Tea, inclusion, natural extracts and natural identical flavours are some of the most common methods used to flavour tea varieties made in Sri Lanka.

  • Inclusions – Dried pieces and fragments of flowers, fruit, herbs or spice are mixed with loose leaf tea to add flavour and aroma to the brew
  • Natural Extracts – Natural extracts, concentrates and essential oil are added to tea leaves using coating methods or infused with tea concentrate to produce naturally flavoured loose leaf tea, tea bags, instant tea, and tea cordials,
  • Natural Identical Flavours – When chemical synthesis is used to obtain flavouring agents from natural ingredients, they are considered as natural identical flavours. While they have the same chemical structure as the natural flavour, they tend to be more stable and less expensive than the natural extracts. Most of the flavoured Ceylon Tea products include natural identical flavours, which due to lack of accurate classification is considered artificial flavouring.
  • Artificial Flavours – Synthetically manufactured flavours which varies from its natural counterparts. It is more intense, less expensive and does not exist in nature. Artificial flavours are hardly used as flavourings in the Ceylon Tea industry.
  • Smoke Dried – Smoked tea varieties like Ceylon Souchong are manufactured by drying over Ceylon Cinnamon sticks to add a smooth woody flavour.

Types Of Flavored Tea: 3 Ways Of Adding Flavors

Around the world, flavored teas are some of the most popular. Famous styles like Jasmine Green, Masala Chai, and Earl Grey are all made with a base of Camellia sinensis tea leaves and added flavor. Despite the occasional snobbery of purists, flavored styles come in a wide range of quality, from mass produced tea bags at the grocery store to whole leaves flavored with organic ingredients. To check the quality of flavored teas, it is important to ask how the extra flavors were added.

What Kinds Of Bottles Should I Use To Make Homemade Extracts

You can find extract-size bottles in most cooking stores and online. Amber bottles are best as they block the light from impacting the extracts. Clear bottles are still an okay option and allow you to watch as the liquid changes color over time. The color is an indication of the developing flavor. You can find clear 8-ounce bottles HERE and amber-colored 8-ounce bottles HERE. Screw top lids are the recommended option when making extracts.

Maple Syrup Will Add A Nutty Flavor

Peach Mango Black Iced Tea Extract

And maple syrup. Really, I don’t think there’s enough of this stuff going around.

True, adding it in coffee will mute its flavor a bit, so I recommend your use maple syrup for low sugar coffee.

You’ll get just enough sweetness to not complain, and the wonderful nutty flavor of maple syrup to remind you of pancakes.

This stuff does run out quickly when you add it in coffee, so if you end up liking it make sure to stock up.

Minutes Went Behind The Scenes With The Largest Flavor Manufacturing Company In The World

Givaudan may be one of the largest companies almost no one has heard of. They have over 9,000 employees in 45 countries. Their main business is to create flavors found in nature through science. For example, they will take something as simple as strawberry and mix a bunch of chemicals together to reproduce the flavor. All without using an actual strawberry. In this video you can see they pride themselves on making flavors that are so irresistible that we cannot stop consuming them.

Just A Hint Of Peppermint Oil

For example peppermint. It’s the main ingredient in those ridiculous but delicious candy canes, and it’s something that’s stuck with many folks as a winter holiday scent.

Odd though, I’m not sure who made peppermint popular in winter but I’m glad they did.

Usually, you’d find peppermint in those candies I mentioned, or in some chocolate, like thin mints.

What about your coffee ? I’ve had coffee with a drop of peppermint, and it’s a very interesting combination. If you don’t like thin mints you won’t like this one either.

I do though, but only as a seasonal treat.

If you do decide to add peppermint oil, please add less than a drop. Just touch the teaspoon to the essential oil, and it’s enough.

Peppermint essential oil is strong, almost too strong.

If you use this i combination with some chocolate sauce, it’s going to end up as the most amazing mocha ever.

EGCG appears to have antiobesity effects. Prolonged treatment of black tea extract has been shown to suppress the postprandial increase of blood glucose and reduce the body weight in diabetic mice .

Recent data from human studies showed that the consumption of green tea and green tea polyphenols may help in reducing body fat by the increasing postprandial thermogenesis and fat oxidation. In a study, six overweight men were given 300 mg EGCG per day for 2 weeks, upon which their resting energy expenditure did not differ significantly as compared with the individuals with placebo treatments. Interestingly, during the first postprandial monitoring phase, the respiratory quotient values were significantly lower with EGCG treatment compared with the placebo . These novel findings suggest that EGCG alone has the potency to increase fat oxidation and, thereby, shows an antiobesity effect.

Caramel Sauce Will Be Always Welcome In Coffee

Another wonderful addition is caramel sauce. It’s one of the most loved sauces, after chocolate sauce. No wonder, since it’s such a great taste.

And if you want to be extra-flavorful, you could get salted caramel sauce and make your coffee even better.

If you do get caramel sauce, remember that the thicker sauce will be better in coffee than the syrup that is sometimes sold as flavoring.

Eggnog It’s Always Going To Be Great In Coffee

Ah, eggnog. Again, it might not be for everyone, but it’s one of the key elements of Christmas.

Traditional, you could say. Even if you don’t like it, your grandma would find your lack of eggnog disturbing.

So, make your grandma happy and put a little in your coffee.

While it might be too sweet sometimes, the coffee will take the edge off and mellow it out.

As always, homemade is going to be best. So remember this when December rolls around.

Blending Your Own Tea Flavors From Scratch

My husband recently had this crazy and perhaps brilliant idea that I could make my own flavored teas by mixing plain tea with herbs, spices, fruit, etc. Likewise I could make herbal teas by just using the non-tea components.

Ive already gotten a start with some fun ingredients, and I started a tea journal to keep track of my experiments. The first tea last night was chamomile-lavender-peppermint, and this morning I tried an Assam-lavender-strawberry blend. Both were quite good!

I was wondering if anyone else does this? What ingredients do you have on hand? Any recipes youd like to share? Is there some clever way to post your recipes on Steepster?

LiberTEAS had her own business!:) I blend myself, but its fairly limited if only I had the $ and the storage to have access to every tea and tisane

As far as flavoring tea goes, the additives have very little to do with the flavoring of the tea. When you get a fruit flavored black tea, for example, and you see bits of dried fruit in there, or you get a chocolate tea and you see chocolate chips in there that has very, VERY little contribution to the overall flavor of the tea, and are used primarily for their aesthetic value.

The key in flavoring tea leaves is flavoring oils which are made from natural extracts.

However, because herbals shelf life are much shorter than a typical tea leaf they go stale and lose their flavor much quicker.
