When General Conference Was Canceled + Other Conference Firsts

If youre a Latter-day Saint or live near a group of them, you probably mark spring and fall not by the changing temperatures but by the commencement of another general conference weekend. Over the years, there are some practices that have come to be expected as much as the conference itself: two days, general authority and officer speakers, meeting at the conference center, a conference edition of the Liahona the following month. But did you know it hasnt always been that way? Here are a few things that havent always been a part of general conference.*

The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square performs a hymn during General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Sunday, April 3, 2022.

During the two days of the just-completed 192nd Annual General Conference, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints feasted on spiritual sermons from their leaders, highlighting distinctive doctrines of heaven and hell, as well as urging members to resolve personal conflicts, to hold fast to Jesus Christ, to follow Gods divine plan, to shun evil, and to maintain balance.

Contemporary topics included suicide prevention, abuse survivors, the role of Heavenly Mother, the impact of the pandemic, the dangers of the internet, the war in Ukraine, and the churchs continuing opposition to same-sex marriage.

Several speakers addressing the crowd in the half-full Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City or millions more watching on televisions or the internet emphasized the churchs expectation for young men to serve full-time missions, for whom it was termed a priesthood responsibility, and encouraged young women to do so as an optional opportunity.

Five women delivered sermons, compared to dozens given by men. The church also announced new leadership for the worldwide womens Relief Society and childrens Primary, including the first-ever Black woman to serve in a churchwide general presidency.

Here are notable speeches from the five sessions:

First Time The General Priesthood Session Was Added: October 1945

Though an evening meeting had been held as part of general conference since as early as 1942, following the end of World War II, it was officially published as the General Priesthood Meeting in the October 1945 conference report.

Elder Joseph Fielding Smith was the first speaker at that session and said,

It is my purpose tonight to plead with our brethren who hold the responsibility of conducting the priesthood for a better supervision of priesthood quorums. In a revelation give to the Prophet for the benefit of the first elders of this Church he said: thou shalt not idle away they time, neither shalt thou bury thy talent that it may not be known . Too many of those who hold the priesthood have idled away their time and have buried their talent. We would like to have a revival among all the quorums of the priesthood.

Primary Leader Amy A Wright: Christ Is The Healer

Amy A. Wright, second counselor and soon-to-be first counselor in the Primary general presidency, speaks at General Conference on Sunday, April 3, 2022.

Jesus Christ will help believers successfully navigate the things in our lives that are broken, no matter our age, said Amy A. Wright, second counselor and soon-to-be first counselor in the Primary general presidency. He can heal broken relationships with God, broken relationships with others, and broken parts of ourselves.

Christ knows everyones complete story and exactly what we suffer, as well as our capabilities and vulnerabilities, Wright said Sunday. … He is the source of healing all that is broken in our lives. As the great mediator and advocate with the Father, Christ sanctifies and restores broken relationships most importantly our relationship with God. “

Wright has spent many hours at a cancer treatment facility united in my suffering with many who were yearning to be healed. Some lived others did not, she said in her sermon. I learned in a profound way that deliverance from our trials is different for each of us, and therefore our focus should be less about the way in which we are delivered and more about the deliverer himself. Our emphasis should always be on Jesus Christ. Exercising faith in Christ means trusting not only in Gods will but also in his timing. For he knows exactly what we need and precisely when we need it.

Activity Rates And Disaffiliation

The LDS Church does not release official statistics on church activity, but it is likely that only approximately 40 percent of its recorded membership in the United States and 30 percent worldwide regularly attend weekly Sunday worship services. A statistical analysis of the 2014 Pew Religious Landscape Survey assessed that “about one-third of those with a Latter-day Saint background” outright “left the Church”, identifying as disaffiliated. Activity rates vary with age, and disengagement occurs most frequently between age 16 and 25. Young single adults are more likely to become inactive than their married counterparts, and overall, women tend to be more active than men.

First Time The Tabernacle Choir Sang At General Conference: October 1865

President Nelson’s 95th Birthday Celebration

Just after the Saints arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in August 1847, a group of them sang at a conference of the Church . This small choir grew, and in 1849, President Brigham Young asked John Parry, who had led an 85-member choir of Welsh converts during that years general conference, to formally organize a choir to provide the music for all future general conferences. A choir was formed that performed at every general conference after that, but it was not until 1865, just a few years after the announcement that a new tabernacle would be built to house conference-goers, that this choir was first referred to in the conference minutes as the Tabernacle Choir.

Mormons Lower Temperature On Hot

Mormon Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter

Top leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints addressed a wide range of topics at their twice-yearly conference on Saturday but primarily implored members of the faith to emphasize unity over division and eschew polarization

SALT LAKE CITY — Top leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints addressed COVID-19, the church’s support of non-discrimination laws, war in Ukraine and legacies of racism at the faith’s first in-person conference since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

The nearly 17 million-member faith, which is widely known as the Mormon church, is hosting about 13,000 people at its 21,000-seat Salt Lake City conference center over two sessions on Saturday. Though its signature conference regularly reached full capacity pre-pandemic, for two years, it has been held mostly remotely, with the majority of viewers watching livestreams from afar.

President Russell Nelson, the Latter-day Saints’ 97-year-old prophet, on Saturday told listeners gathered at the church’s Utah headquarters and those tuning in remotely that the troubles afflicting the world reaffirmed the need for faith and devotion.

Contention violates everything the Savior stood for and taught, he said.

The forward-looking perspective echoes prior remarks from church leaders, who have disavowed racism and expressed regret for past church positions, while stopping short of formally apologizing and avoiding opening up debate about church doctrines being reversed.

Apostle Dieter F Uchtdorf: Offer Your Whole Souls

Apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf speaks at General Conference on Sunday, April 3, 2022.

Riding a bike means learning to balance and flying an airplane requires upward lift, apostle Dieter F. Uchtdorf said Sunday. Just as forward momentum keeps a bicycle balanced and upright, moving forward helps an aircraft overcome the pull of gravity and drag.

What does this mean for disciples of Jesus Christ? Uchtdorf asked. It means that if we want to find balance in life, and if we want the Savior to lift us heavenward, then our commitment to him and his gospel cant be casual or occasional.

He then described the difference between sacrifice and consecration. These two are similar, he said, but not identical.

To sacrifice means to give something up in favor of something more valuable, Uchtdorf said. … When we consecrate something, we dont leave it to be consumed on the altar. Rather, we put it to use in the Lords service. We dedicate it to him and his holy purposes. We receive the talents that the Lord has given us and strive to increase them, manifold, to become even more helpful in building the Lords kingdom. Very few of us will ever be asked to sacrifice our lives for the Savior. But we are all invited to consecrate our lives to him.

As members look at their lives and see a hundred things to do, they may feel overwhelmed, he said. When we see one thing loving and serving God and his children, in a hundred different ways then we can focus on those things with joy.

First Satellite Transmission Of Conference: October 1979

I Know That My Savior Loves Me

Though radio satellites had been used prior to this time, 1979 was the first time satellite direct was used to transmit conference sessions. Just a few years later, President Spencer W. Kimball demonstrated satellite broadcast capability in a new way, speaking to the general conference congregation remotely from Fayette New York.

President Dallin H Oaks: Gods Plans For Marriage Will Win Out

President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the governing First Presidency, speaks at General Conference on Sunday, April 3, 2022.

To reach the highest degree of celestial glory in the afterlife, mortals must follow the churchs revealed doctrine and established commandments, including faithfulness to the covenants of an eternal marriage between a man and a woman, Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the governing First Presidency, said Sunday afternoon.

That is why the Utah-based faith teaches, Oaks said, that gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal and eternal identity and purpose.

It is also why God has required the church to oppose social and legal pressures to retreat from his doctrine of marriage between a man and a woman, he said, and to oppose changes that confuse or alter gender or homogenize the differences between men and women.

The churchs positions on these fundamentals frequently provoke opposition. We understand that, Oaks said. Gods plan allows for opposition in all things, and Satans most strenuous opposition is directed at whatever is most important to that plan.

The devil seeks to oppose progress toward exaltation by confusing gender, distorting marriage, and discouraging childbearing, he said. However, we know that in the long run the divine purpose and plan of our loving Heavenly Father will not be changed.
