So yes, that generally means that soda, tea, coffee, fruit drinks, and the like should be avoided . And while that recommendation may seem disappointingly limited, this page outlines much of the reasoning that lies behind it.
There may be some wiggle room.
While blindly following Invisaligns® advice is a best practice, once you understand the issues and concerns their recommendation is based on, youll likely find that there can be a little leeway in exactly what you do. We explain below.
Can I Drink An Iced Latte With Invisalign
Yes, you can. Tea and coffee can be consumed while wearing an Invisalign aligner, provided that they are not too hot. Also, if you are going out for a night, you can drink, but be sure to take your retainers out before you start drinking. And once again, before you put them back in be sure to brush your teeth and brush your trays.
Answer: Drinking Tea With #invisalign #drsofttouch
Hello there,You should not drink herbal teas while wearing your Invisalign trays. Regular tea, soda, coffee and herbal tea will stain your trays. I would recommend that you always remove them when you eat and when you drink anything other than water. It’s important to remove your trays before each meal, brush and floss diligently and keep your aligners clean. Good luck and I hope this helps. Look After Your Aligners
Put them in a glass of water with a denture cleaning tablet in the morning. This will help keep them fresh and clean, and combat morning breath. It also helps to keep them looking nice and clear, and avoid discolouration.
Dont use toothpaste to brush them, as it contains abrasive ingredients. This can actually cause the aligners to build up stains and odours. If you want to brush them, just use water or a mild soap.
Always carry your case with you. Dont wrap them in a napkin when youre out for a meal, as the risk of accidentally throwing them away is too high and they are expensive to replace!
Does Invisalign Ruin Enamel
The most common concern we hear about Invisalign treatment is that it will damage the enamel of our teeth. The truth is, there may be some initial softening of tooth enamel during the early stages of treatment which then returns to its original condition once youre done with your aligners.
This change in tooth hardness can cause a temporary sensitivity and requires extra care when brushing your teeth. However, this does not mean that Invisalign causes irreversible damage to your teeth or gums.

A How Common Is This Problem
Wearing any type of dental appliance has the potential to affect the way a person speaks. In most cases, this has to do with the extra amount of thickness the appliance adds to the roof of their mouth , or the backside of their upper front teeth.
Whats different about wearing Invisalign®?
In comparison to other types of dental appliances, removable orthodontic aligners are made out of very thin plastic that only covers over tooth surfaces, and they fit very snugly on the teeth.
Due to these characteristics, very little actual thickness is added. And for that reason, most people dont encounter any significant speech problems when wearing their aligners. Admittedly, however, for those that do it can be one of the tip-offs that they are wearing invisible braces. Additional signs.
1) Whats normal?
Probably everyone notices at least some difference or awkwardness in the way they talk when they put in their first set of aligners for the first time.
- Its not unusual to notice a slight lisp or slur when speaking.
- These effects are usually most obvious when trying to pronounce words that contain s and th sounds.
A study by Nedwed polled Invisalign® patients and determined that 93% of them experienced no speech impairment during the first 3 to 6 months of their treatment.
This finding does imply that 7% did have some level of difficulty, which isnt necessarily a small percentage.
2) How long will the speech difficulties persist?
What Can You Drink When Wearing Invisalign
You should only really be drinking plain water, which can be either cold or room temperature, during your Invisalign treatment.
Of course, sticking entirely to water for months while your teeth are being straightened may be impossible to achieve, so your best option is to always remove your clear aligners before enjoying any drink other than water.

Drinking And Teeth: The Basics
We all have bacteria in our mouth, some of which is good and some harmful. The harmful bacteria feed off the sugar and starches you eat and drink. When they do this, they release acids that eat away at your tooth enamel and form a sticky substance called plaque. Eventually, this can lead tocavities. This is why its best to have drinks like soda, sweetened iced tea, certain cocktails, juice and sports drinks in moderation, whether youre in orthodontic treatment or not.
Other drinks, such as coffee, tea and red wine, may not have as much sugar as say, soda, but they can stain the teeth. Again, in order to keep your smile looking bright and fresh, youll also want to enjoy these in moderation. Some of the worst drinks for your teeth are actually acidic beverages. The acid in drinks, including orange juice, lemonade and white wine, can weaken the tooth enamel, making you more prone to cavities and staining. Adult beverages like mixed drinks with alcohol and fruit juice have the one-two punch of acidity and sugar. While the occasional alcoholic drink is fine, drinking them regularly, particularly if youre not keeping up with your oral hygiene routine, can have a negative impact on your smile.
How Does Alcohol Consumption Impact Invisalign Braces
Although drinking alcohol may not have a direct effect on the fit or function of your aligners, but it may affect their aesthetics. When you drink a soda, beer, red wine, or any other sugary drink, it stains your teeth and aligners. Another reason to avoid drinking alcohol while wearing Invisalign aligners is that the high sugar content of these drinks can cause teeth cavities especially if you do not rinse your mouth/ brush your teeth afterward. This is because the sugars and the high acidic content of the drinks result in increased removal of minerals from your teeth, making them weak and more liable to having teeth cavities.

Drink Only Water For The Very Best Results
As mentioned above, water is the only safe beverage you can drink while wearing Invisalign aligners. Not only does drinking water alone help protect your aligners and teeth, but, by doing so, it helps you achieve the very best results within the expected time frame.
Thus, Invisalign requires your commitment to wear them for no less than 22 hours a day, and protect your teeth and the aligners because they are costing you quite a bit of money and you want the best your money can provide. What does this mean for your day-to-day living? It means drinking only water for the very best results.
Consider your morning coffee. If you want to protect your teeth and the aligners, you must take the aligners out the hot liquid can warp the aligners while the caffeine can stain both them and your teeth. But if you take the aligners off, you are looking at around 30 minutes, if not longer, of being without your aligners. That time adds up quickly. And if you have the aligners off more than 2 hours, then you risk not getting the very best results your aligners can provide.
Cool Water Might Be All You Need
Invisaligns hygiene and dietary requirements can be demanding, but its well worth the time. After all, if your strictness prevents restorative work or teeth whitening, youll probably be glad you planned meals carefully. Invisalign looks great, granting a beautiful smile. You can make it through the diet if you try. Ask your dentist, and we can go from there!

Can You Drink Soda With Braces
While soda is usually mentioned as one of the drinks to avoid with braces, drinking soda with braces every so often is okay, but moderation is really key. Having a soda every day or even every few days isnt recommended. So, why is soda bad for braces? Soda is full of sugar. The bacteria in the mouth mix with saliva and food particles to form a sticky film called plaque that adheres to the teeth. The bacteria in the plaque feed on the sugars and starches from food and drinks, such as soda. As the bacteria snack, they release acids that eat away at our tooth enamel, which can eventually lead to tooth decay.
However, its not just the sugar in soda that is harmful to the teeth. Sodas are also carbonated and many contain acids like phosphoric acid and citric acid. These acids weaken and erode enamel, making the teeth even more susceptible to the acid attacks from plaque. The one-two punch of acidity and sugar is why soda is one of the worst drinks for teeth.
If youre wondering: Is diet soda better for your teeth than regular soda? The answer is, not really. Diet soda also has acids in it that will do a number on your enamel. A study on soda and teeth found that regular and diet Coca Cola and Pepsi dissolved enamel 55 to 65 times more than the baseline, which was water and root beer. Mountain Dew was even worse and considered the biggest offender.
Reasons Why You Shouldnt Consume Beverages While Wearing Invisalign
In general, the kinds of problems associated with drinking beverages other than just cool water tend to fall into the following two categories. They are:
- Adverse effects that the drink might have on aspects of the Invisalign® system, such as aligner warping or staining, or affecting the properties of its plastic.
- Or else effects that the drink may have on your teeth, such as staining or increasing your risk for tooth decay.

Factors That Can Damage Your Invisalign Trays
1. Extreme temperatures
Invisalign is made out of a medical-grade plastic that becomes soft when heated and hard when cooled. This means extremely hot and icy cold drinks can cause the plastic to warp. And if your aligners dont fit your teeth properly, they wont be able to exert the necessary force on your teeth to get them into the desired position. Wearing a warped aligner would also make the next set of trays not work effectively, and this could slow down your treatment.
2. Sugar and Acid
Your mouth is loaded with bacteria, both good and bad, when you eat or drink something sugary, the bad bacteria feed on the sugar and form acids that can:
Saliva usually prevents demineralization by naturally adding calcium and phosphate to your teeth and by delivering the fluoride in your toothpaste to your tooths surface. But Invisalign acts as a barrier between your teeth and the saliva and traps all that sugar and acid, making it a major breeding space for bacteria. Now if that isnt reason enough to remove your aligners before you drink that soda, we dont know what is.
Most people choose Invisalign because theyre practically invisible. So drinking a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or a cup of Espresso with your trays in, defeats the whole purpose of wearing them. Now, lets look at what you can drink with Invisalign
Opt For Clear Beverages
Choosing clear or light-colored drinks over dark liquids. Clear soda or white wine has less chance of staining Invisalign than coffee, grape juice, or red wine. Remember, though, that even though lighter beverages might not discolor the trays, their sugars, acids, and carbonation can cause cavities and bad breath.

Will I Have A Lisp
This depends on the patient. Some patients do not get a lisp at all, whilst other patients will have a lisp for the first two to three days of treatment, while your mouth adjusts to the Invisalign brace. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.
Your mouth will adapt to the Invisalign brace but it is very helpful to practise speaking with an Invisalign brace. Singing to the radio and talking will help to make that lisp go away very quickly.
Here is a video from Lisa, Invisalign co-ordinator and previous wearer with some tips about lisps.
E Suggestions For Minimizing Eating Discomfort
Here are two suggestions for Invisalign® patients who find that they experience tenderness with their teeth when trying to eat.
- Start the use of each new set of aligners at bedtime. This way your teeth will have several hours to get used to their fit and settle down before your next meal.
- During those periods when the pain associated with eating is especially severe, you may find that taking an OTC analgesic is needed.

A Reasons Why You Shouldnt Eat With Invisalign In Place
1) You might damage your aligners.
This is probably the reason thats most obvious to most people. While Invisalign® tooth aligners are durable and strong, theyre just made out of thin plastic. And when theyre exposed to chewing forces, its possible to crack, break or distort them.
Beyond just obvious damage, subjecting your aligners to chewing forces may affect them in other ways too:
- A study by Schuster suggested that aligner exposure to chewing forces led to an increase in appliance stiffness. This stiffening effect resulted in less force being exerted by the appliance onto the patients teeth.
- A study by Bradley found that constant aligner exposure to the forces generated by opposing teeth led to aligner deformation, which resulted in a weakening of force exerted by the appliance.
The fit of each and every aligner is important.
Any type of damage that does occur that affects an aligners fit will also affect the effectiveness with which its able to create tooth movements. How aligners work. And when an aligner has been seriously compromised, the aligner will no longer be able to accomplish the specific aspect of your treatment process that it was designed to accomplish.
If thats whats happened, the aligner will have to be replaced because no other one can substitute. And a patients pre-made series of aligners All delivered together. doesnt come with spares.
3) Youll still need to clean your aligners.
Can You Drink White Wine Or Gin And Tonic While Wearing Your Aligners
Like flavoured and sparkling water, it may seem OK to drink clear coloured alcohol as it may not stain your clear aligners. However, both white wine and gin and tonic contain sugar that could cause cavities if left between your teeth and your aligners. And, as a tonic is carbonated, it isnt wise to drink while wearing your Invisalign aligners.
The same goes for any alcohol or fizzy drinks, all of which contain sugar and are carbonated. So, in answer to another common question: Can you drink beer while wearing Invisalign aligners? No, you cant, but you can remove them to drink then rinse your mouth with water before replacing your aligners.
