Assam tea gets its name from the Assam region in India, where it is grown. Assam lies along the Brahmaputra Riveran area called the Brahmaputra Valley in northeast India, bordering Bangladesh and Myanmar. Assam is the largest tea growing region in the world. The tea here is grown at sea level, in a warm, wet climate. The weather conditions and terrain contribute to the distinct malty flavor of Assam tea.

Assam tea is also known as Assam black tea, breakfast tea, English breakfast tea or Irish breakfast tea. The breakfast tea you see at your local tea shop or at the grocery store may be pure Assam tea or a blend of different tea leaves including Assam.

You can buy Assam tea in tea bags or as a loose tea. Many tea growers recommend that you look for tippy Assam tea or tea leaves that have golden tipsa sign of high quality.

Another option is to compost them. Their nitrogen-boosting effects improve the health of your garden while attracting good bacteria. The bottom line is that they are the gift that keeps on giving long after youve drained your cup.

The Best Assam Teas Are Bold Brash And Malty

Ahh Assam. If there is one region of the world that holds the esteem and loyalty of tea aficionados, it is Assam.

Located in the valley traced by the mighty Brahmaputra River, the Indian state of Assam is a lush tropical land with ideal conditions for the cultivation of tea. Rainfall is plentiful here and the soils are rich with minerals, clays, and gravels that tumble out of Tibet and wash downstream to valley plains.

It is very warm in Assam with many days of the year reaching above 90 . High ambient temperatures contribute in part to the bold character of Assam teas. To tame the boldness caused by exposure to heat and sunand to shelter workersmany Assam growers plant shade trees throughout the vast tea fields.

Two key technological developments transformed Assam into a center of innovation in the global tea industry. First, 19th-century tea growers, working closely with British horticulturalists, discovered that hybrids of local and imported varieties of Camellia sinensis were extremely productive and yet made a quality cup of tea. Many cultivated varieties of tea grown around the world today are in fact descendants of hybrid stock from Assam.

And second, Assam tea factories introduced key innovations in tea manufacture that reduced human labor required to process large quantities of tea leaf. These two developments, coupled with strong market demand, now rank Assam among the most productive tea-producing regions in the world.

Jaapi & Wooden Rhino Statue

The jaapi or japi is a traditional funnel-shaped hat of Assam. Jaapi is considered to be a symbol of Assamese culture and worn in a style of Bihu dance. Jaapi offered as a sign of respect in rituals, and positioned as a decorative item around the house, especially near the front door as a welcome sign. It is made from strongly woven bamboo and/or cane and tokou paat a large, palm leaf.

Again, as we know that Assam is known for its one-horned rhinos, you can find handmade wooden rhinos as a memento. These are ideal for home/office decoration, gift, and felicitation. These wooden statues of a Rhino come in various sizes. A Rhino statue is a must carry souvenir from Assam.

Assam Tea Is A Black Tea Named After The Region Of Its Production Assam In India

Tippy Assam Tea

This tea, most of which is grown at or near sea level, is known for its body, briskness, malty flavour, and strong, bright colour. Assam teas, or blends containing Assam, are often sold as “breakfast” teas. For instance, Irish breakfast tea, a maltier and stronger breakfast tea, consists of small-sized Assam tea leaves.

The state of Assam is the world’s largest tea-growing region, lying on either side of the Brahmaputra River, and bordering Bangladesh and Burma . This part of India experiences high precipitation during the monsoon period, as much as 10 to 12 inches of rain per day. The daytime temperature rises to about 103F , creating greenhouse-like conditions of extreme humidity and heat. This tropical climate contributes to Assam’s unique malty taste, a feature for which this tea is well known.

Though Assam generally denotes the distinctive black teas from Assam, the region produces smaller quantities of green and white teas as well with their own distinctive characteristics.

Historically, Assam has been the second commercial tea production region after southern China. Southern China and Assam are the only two regions in the world with native tea plants.

Loose Leaf Tea Storage Ideas

What becomes of the leaves you have yet to use? We recommend investing in Loose Leaf Tea containers to ensure they maintain their remarkable character. One of the primary reasons for doing so is that the wrong environment can spell disaster. Those that become damp, for example, are vulnerable to mould. Excessive heat, meanwhile, can destroy flavourful blends. And the same is true of direct sunlight.

Its also essential to recognise that Tea is hygroscopic in nature. This means that it can absorb moisture and even nearby scents. Keeping it away from Fresh Coffee, then, and even other types of Tea where possible is ideal. You wouldnt want your First Flush Darjeeling Tea tasting like Pluckley Espresso Roast. Why not buy a Tea Caddy Silver as a first line of defence?

Does Assam Tea Contain Caffeine

Assam tealike all varieties of black teacontains caffeine. Black tea tends to be higher in caffeine than other types of tea like green tea or white tea. However, a cup of Assam tea will still have less caffeine than a standard cup of black coffee.

In general, a cup of Assam tea will contain about 50-90 milligrams of caffeine per cup. As a basis for comparison, a cup of black coffee contains about 100-150 milligrams per cup. However, the brewing method and the strength of the tea or coffee will affect how much caffeine you consume. A stronger brew will yield more caffeine.

A Tea With Friends: Pour To Impress

How to Make Assam Tea | About Assam Tea | Golden Tips Tea

Those who do not drink tea regularly can be hard to impress.

This is why I suggest that for social gatherings such as holiday feasts or other special occasions that you brew up a leaf that is flavorful without being too strong.

When I first poured this Assam tea, I immediately detected an aroma that was mild compared to the other black teas that I review here. Mild yet Assam-confident, which is how I would describe the flavor of this fine tea as well.

I also like a soft steep with this CTC: One teaspoon in 205°F water for 3 minutes.

And does it ever pair well with baked goods! Well, to be more specific, I paired it incidentally with breakfast cereal and milk. So I suppose that I did add milk and sweetener, if indirectly, to this particular tea. It was a nice pairing, and I think that I now have a friend for that slice of Thanksgiving pecan pie thats waiting patiently in the fridge.

If youre having a party with baked goods, and you dont mind paying a bit more for the silky smoothness of this tea, then Vahdams leaf is a great choice for those times when you want to pour to impress.

More Information About Assam Tea

The Assam tea growing region lies in the Brahmaputra Valley and only tea from this region can be classified as Assam.

It is the worlds largest tea growing region, but to this day, many producers use organic methods. They grow without the use of any pesticides, fertilizers, or other harmful chemicals.

Harvest And Processing

Due to the climate, tea leaves are harvested twice a year. The two harvests are referred to as the first and second flush.

  • Spring Flush : The first harvest begins in March and can run until mid-May. Small leaves and buds are harvested during this flush. First flush Assam is considered lower quality and less desirable.
  • Summer Flush : The second harvest begins in mid-May. Tea from this harvest is known as tippy, because the leaves have golden tips. They brew to a sweeter, darker and more full-bodied tea, that is more prized than first flush tea.

The tea leaves are harvested manually and collected in bamboo baskets or sacks made from cloth. Within 24 hours of being picked, the leaves are withered, by spreading them out on bamboo mats or mesh racks for 12 hours. This reduces the moisture content in the leaves and they become softer.

After withering, the leaves are either rolled or crushed and shaken in a machine. This releases enzymes and prepared them for oxidation. They oxidize slowly while spread out on trays. As the leaves oxidize, they turn dark.
