You can easily stir tea while it steeps if you do it gently. The goal is to not cause the tea leaves to become diluted, and also not to break them up and release their flavor. To stir the tea, theres a good and a bad way. The bad way is to just violently shake or turn the teapot, or to stir the tea with a spoon. This will cause the brewed tea to not be as flavorful, and it might also make the tea too bitter. The good way is to use a large spoon and to gently stir in a 360 degree motion.   • For our taste test, we excluded any tea that has matcha powder added as it covers up the true flavors of green tea leaves.

    How Do I Achieve The Right Temperature

    The most accurate way is to use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the water in the kettle. One approach is to heat the water in your kettle to the desired temperature and then pour it into your teapot. Another approach is to heat the water to boiling and then let it cool down a bit before pouring into your teapot.

    To cool down the water quickly we recommend the following methods:

    • Pour water from the kettle into a Pyrex glass cup and let sit 2 – 3 minutes to reach 160°F – 170°F or 5 minutes to reach 140°F – 150°F. Then pour into your teapot and brew for the desired length of time. You may need to adjust the sitting time based on the size of your Pyrex cup and the amount of water. Our example uses 6 ounces of water in a 1-cup Pyrex.
    • Pour water from the kettle into a cool glass or ceramic cup and pour back and forth between cups until the desired temperature is reached. Then pour into your teapot and brew.

    Tools Techniques And Tips

    While there are special tools to help you steep tea, you can also keep it simple and still steep like an expert.

    At a minimum, you need a teacup, tea bag, and kettle. Place the tea bag in your teacup. Fill the kettle with fresh, cold, and filtered water and bring it to a boil, or a near boil if brewing green or white tea.

    Then, pour the water over your tea bag in the teacup. Covering the teacup with a saucer is optional, but doing so will help retain more of the aromatic compounds. Steep for about 5 minutes, or to your taste.

    For loose leaf tea, youll also need a metal tea ball or infuser to hold the leaves. Measure out 1 teaspoon of dried tea leaves or 1 tablespoon of fresh ingredients per 68-ounce cup.

    Place the leaves in the tea ball or infuser and submerge it in a cup of hot water for the proper amount of time.

    Using loose leaves requires a few more tools for steeping, but in return, you have a larger selection of varieties compared with bagged tea, allowing for more combinations of flavor and health benefits.
