$32m Will Help Uns World Food Program Fight Hunger In Nine Countries

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated $32 million to the United Nations World Food Program on Wednesday, representing the Utah-based faiths largest-ever one-time contribution to a humanitarian organization.
We are so grateful to collaborate with the World Food Program because we know they will get food to those who need it most, Bishop L. Todd Budge, second counselor in the churchs Presiding Bishopric, said during a visit to the WFPs headquarters in Rome. And we thank Latter-day Saints and friends of the faith whose financial sacrifices have made this gift possible. Such giving makes Gods children a little happier and all of us a little holier.
The money will help provide food to 1.6 million of the most vulnerable people in nine countries Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen where the WFP says there is a seismic hunger crisis.
The organizations executive director, David Beasley, thanked the church for its extraordinary donation, according to a news release, saying it could not come at a more critical time.
With millions of people starving today, he added, WFP is working hard to deliver food, help and hope and this lifesaving contribution allows us to do just that.
According to the church, with a global membership of 16.8 million, it donates about $1 billion annually to those in need around the world.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints endeavor to follow the Saviors admonition to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, take in the stranger, clothe the naked and visit the sick and those in prison . Millions of people have benefited from temporal and spiritual assistance through humanitarian and welfare donations.
Breakdown of Donations
In keeping with the biblical practice of tithes, Latter-day Saints offer one-tenth of their income to the Church. These funds are used to:
- Provide buildings or places of worship for members around the world.
- Provide education programs, including support for Church universities and seminary and institute programs.
- Support the Churchs worldwide missionary program.
- Build and operate temples around the world and administer the worlds largest family history program.
- Support the Churchs welfare programs, which serve people around the world regardless of religion, nationality or race.
On the first Sunday of the month, members of the Church in good health are encouraged to fast for two consecutive meals and donate generously to the Church the money they would have spent on food. These funds help those in local congregations, where Latter-day Saint leaders confidentially allocate funds to those in need, with the ultimate goal of self-reliance.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Australia began with the arrival of seventeen-year-old missionaryWillian James Barratt in 1840. The LDS Church’s first baptism in Australia was in 1842 when Barratt baptised Robert Beauchamp, who would later become an Australian mission president. However, official missionary work did not begin until John Murdock, who became the first official mission president in Australia, and Charles Wandell established a mission in Sydney, Australia on 31 October 1851. The colonies of New Zealand and Tasmania were added to the Australian Mission in 1854, creating the Australasian Mission. In 1898, however, the Australasian Mission was divided into the New Zealand Mission and the Australian Mission.
Membership count include everyone that have joined the church that are still living as well as unbaptized children, regardless of current affiliation . As of 31 December 2021, the LDS Church reported 155,383 members in 309 Congregations in Australia which is the largest body of members and congregations in Oceania. This is an increase of 30,945 members since 2009 which is the largest increase of members in Oceania.
In the 2016 Australian census, 61,600 people self-identified as members of the LDS Church on an optional question. In the 2021 census, 57,868 people identified themselves as members of the church.

Bringing Relief To Suffering Souls

On Monday, Nelson further pledged a $2 million church contribution per year, for the next three years, to bring relief to suffering souls in underprivileged areas of the United States.
With the faiths NAACP partners, this donation is meant to encourage service and help to those in need as well as assist them in developing self-reliance in those areas, Nelson said. This is consistent with our many humanitarian efforts around the world for which our members have donated so generously.
The church will select six metro areas and match individual Latter-day Saint congregations with Black sororities and fraternities, chapters of the Urban League and other groups to build a model of collaboration.
The church leader acknowledged the contributions of Black leaders, including Johnson and UNCF President Michael L. Lomax.
On this week of Juneteenth a time designated to remember the end of slavery in the United States, Nelson said, we are honored to join with our dear friends from the NAACP and the UNCF to announce these goals and our shared vision.
Lomax said the three bold initiatives will do much to erase the sense of marginalization in so many by helping them get a good education.
This is not just a financial arrangement, he said, but a transformational partnership.

Nutritional Development Services Receives Donation Of 40000 Pounds Of Food From The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter
The donation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia was made possible through Catholic Charities USA, the national office for the Catholic Charities ministry nationwide.
Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia recently received a donation of nearly 40,000 pounds of non-perishable food items from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah. This donation, which has been administered nationally in collaboration with Catholic Charities USA , will provide critical support to individuals and families across the Greater Philadelphia region who are in need of nourishing sustenance in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic.
In partnership with Caring for Friends, the donated food items were delivered for storage to the Caring for Friends warehouse in Northeast Philadelphia. The food will benefit NDS Community Food Program and help stock the shelves of its network of food cupboards throughout the five county metropolitan area comprising the Archdiocese. Donated items will also benefit Caring for Friends which distributes meals and food to seniors, disabled, homeless, and families with children in need.
Since the onset of the pandemic, NDS has provided food and food-related resources to individuals, seniors, families, and children in need. Through its daily activities, NDS actualizes the Gospel story of the miracle of the loaves and the fishes.

Mission Division And Slow Growth
Beginning in 1857, missionary work in Australia was determined unsuccessful and the focus was turned to New Zealand. However, on 1 January 1898, the Australasian Mission was divided into the Australian Mission and the New Zealand Mission, allowing for more effort to be put into missionary work in Australia. Previously, from the 1860s until 1898, church leaders in Utah gave Australia little attention and missionary work was not contiguous. There were three or four operating branches in Australia between 1879 and 1898. Andrew Smith was appointed the president of the new Australian mission. In 1890, the first converts were baptised in Brisbane and the East Brisbane Branch, the first branch in Brisbane, was organised on 1 September 1896. By 1898, it was not only the branch with the most complete leadership and organisation but also the largest in the country, with 79 members. By 1898, there were around 200 members in Australia and 21 missionaries in 1900. Because the LDS Church began encouraging church members to stay in their homelands rather than emigrate, church membership from 1910 to 1925 doubled from 600 to 1,169.

SALT LAKE CITY The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Wednesday evening it has approved an electronic method for members in the U.S. to pay tithing and charitable donations.
Historically, donation envelopes and contributions were given to priesthood leaders in each church ward or branch. This same process will continue to be used, but the new Online Donations system will give members in the U.S. an additional method to submit their contributions to the church, according to a statement from the LDS Church.
Along with tithing and charitable donations, members can also use the website to donate financially to LDS missionaries.
The Churchs Finance and Records Department says the initial site not only demonstrated a simplified donation process for members, but also showed that this new approach reduced the load on local leaders and clerks charged with processing donations, the statement said.

Challenges To Missionary Work
The LDS Church and its missionaries in Australia experienced setbacks in the early 1900s due to opposition from missionaries of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints . Many LDS Church members converted to the RLDS church. In early 1900, some members of the LDS Church received RLDS literature and began circulating it in the large Brisbane branch. Fifteen LDS Church members were baptised into the RLDS church and were thusly excommunicated for apostasy. Despite, the loss of members, new members were baptised and one missionary viewed the apostasy as “cleaning out the tares”.
Additionally, after an LDS missionary street meeting in Adelaide in 1913, RLDS missionaries began speaking ill of the LDS Church to the public, causing mobs and breakups of street meetings. Adelaide police forbid LDS missionaries from holding street meetings after these disturbances. There were a series of public debates in Brisbane between LDS and RLDS missionaries, the most prominent of which included the 1906 debate and the 1918 debate. The LDS missionary was considered the winner of the 1906 debate with inquiries of baptism to follow. The RLDS side won the 1918 debate, causing 12 LDS Church members to leave and join the RLDS church. The 12 members were excommunicated. No further debates were reported. After these incidents, LDS missionaries avoided contact with RLDS missionaries and church members.

The Perpetual Education Fund
The Perpetual Education Fund was established by the Church in 2001 under then-prophet Gordon B. Hinckley. Part of the Churchs encouragement for members to become self-reliant, the fund has helped over 90,000 members worldwide to obtain an education. Through loan repayments and generous donations, this fund lifts individuals and families out of poverty.
When President Hinckley first introduced the fund, he talked about a fund established by Brigham Young in 1849. The Church had won thousands of converts in the British Isles who wanted to gather to Utah but didnt have the means. The Church established the Perpetual Emigration Fund through which the donations of the Saints enabled poorer emigrants to make the journey. With employment in Utah, they were able to repay the fund and help others make the trip to America.
The Perpetual Education Fund works the same way. Poorer Saints in many countries who cannot afford higher education borrow from the fund then repay when they find good employment, perpetuating the resource for others in the future.
Now that fund is full because of the generosity of modern Latter-day Saints.

To offer Church donations online, you will first need an LDS login. You can pay tithing and other donations by first navigating to ChurchofJesusChrist.org and selecting the account menu on the far right of the page. In that menu, choose the Donations link. You can also navigate to the donations page directly by going to donations.churchofjesuschrist.org. You will be prompted to enter your login and password. You will then be taken to the online donations system.

Why Church Donations Are Important
Tithing has been has been known since Old Testament times. As recorded in Genesis 14:1720, the prophet Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek. For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, paying tithing and other donations to the Church is a sacred privilege.
