How Does Matcha Compare To Green Tea

Is Matcha REALLY Good for You? Exploring the Health Benefits of Tea.

Both regular brewed green tea and matcha contain caffeine, but less than coffee or black tea. Matcha appears to contain more caffeine that regular brewed green tea.

It also appears to contain more EGCG. ConsumerLab.com, an independent testing group, tested matcha products in 2015 and found that matcha provided 17 mg to 109 mg of EGCG per serving. By comparison, the average brewed green tea provides 25 to 86 mg per serving. While matcha powders contained more catechins per gram than brewed green tea, it was substantially more expensive: The lowest cost matcha powder was available at the time for $2.31 for 200mg of EGCG, compared to 27 cents for the same amount from brewed green tea. Compared to the powders, matcha in tea bags provides significantly less EGCG.

Part of the whole aura is that its an experience, says Dr. Tod Cooperman, the president of ConsumerLab.com. But you are paying a premium for that nice experience.

Go For Quality Not Quantity

Matcha of any kind can be enjoyed deliciously in different ways. A little goes a long way not only because it has such a savory flavor but also because its packed with all those nutrients.

Quality matcha is easily detected with a general rule of thumb the greener, the more delicate the flavor, the better. Its also pricier due to more meticulous production methods that preserve its hue and complex flavor.

Higher-grade matcha is generally more vibrantly green as a result of being dried in shade rather than sunlight. More expensive matcha also uses younger leaves formed at the top of the plant, which give it a much more delicate flavor.

Thats why higher-quality matcha is more suited to be enjoyed simply as tea.

Support And Protect Cognitive Health With Age

Drinking matcha daily may help protect against cognitive decline in both older women and men, helping ward off dementia and helping boost memory thanks to its high amount of polyphenols and amino acids. One 12-week study that sought to determine how matcha impacted cognitive function in adults over 60 found that matcha significantly improved performance on recall and memory tests. Read more.

Matcha does not give you a buzz in the same way as caffeine does however, it does contain caffeine and provides a source of natural energy.

The caffeine content of matcha is generally believed to be lower than that of coffee, and it is thought to be smoother on the body, meaning it wont produce a crash the way coffee can. Instead of the jittery feeling coffee produces, matcha gives you a distinct energy boost that slowly wears off and allows you to remain alert and focused.

Matcha also contains the amino acid L-theanine, which produces a calming feeling.

Is Matcha Tea Safe For Everyone

The tea is generally recognised as safe for most of us, however, if you are sensitive to caffeine, its advisable to limit the total number of caffeinated drinks you consume, including matcha. Consuming too much caffeine from any source may disrupt your sleep and, in some people, increases anxiety – if this is relevant to you, look to reduce your intake and aim to have your last caffeinated drink at about 12 noon. Other groups who should limit their caffeine intake include pregnant women.

If youve been diagnosed with iron-deficiency anaemia you should be aware that, like other tea, matcha contains natural compounds called tannins. These interfere with the absorption of iron and for this reason its wise to avoid drinking tea with a meal, instead leave at least one hour before you have a brew.

What Are Matcha Tea Benefits

Matcha, like other green teas, contains a class of antioxidants called catechins. Matcha is high in a catechin called EGCG , which is believed to have cancer-fighting effects on the body. Studies have linked green tea to a variety of health benefits, like helping to prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer, and even encouraging weight loss. However, its important to note that much of this research isnt from clinical trials that show green tea causes a benefit. Instead, its largely from population-based studies, where researchers look at groups of people who drink green tea and compare their health outcomes to groups that dont drink it. Studies have shown associations between tea and better health, but causation is not yet proven. Matcha is even less studied than brewed green tea.

Still, there have been some interesting findings. A 2014 study looked at 25 randomized controlled trials on the link between tea and blood pressure and reported that when people drank teaespecially green teafor 12 weeks, their blood pressure dropped significantly. A 2011 study reported that drinking green tea appeared to be linked with lower levels of bad LDL cholesterol, but more research is needed. Because matcha is a type of green tea, they may share similar benefits, but theres not enough research to make that claim.

How Is Matcha Different To Green Tea

Matcha Green Tea Powder USDA Certified Maccha Classic Traditional ...

Matcha is made from green tea leaves, which are finely ground into the powder we all recognise as Matcha. Whilst other green teas are grown throughout much of Asia, it is generally recognised that true authentic Matcha is always grown in Japan, where its cultivation was perfected.

Matcha differs from other green teas in two main aspects of how it is farmed and processed:

The green tea plants for Matcha are shade-grown for 3-4 weeks before harvest: farmers cover the plants for around 30 days before harvest to avoid direct sunlight, this increases Matchas chlorophyll and amino acid content

The stems and veins of the leaves are removed before processing: this allows the entire leaf to be made into a fine powder, using the whole leaf also boosts the antioxidant load and caffeine content

Exposure To Toxic Elements

This side effect stems from the environment that the camellia sinensis tea plant is grown in. Lead, arsenic and fluoride have all been identified in the soil where some of these tea plants grow, and these chemicals make their way into the green tea leaves themselves.

With regular brewed green tea, they pose less of a threat because only a very small amount infuses into the hot water. But utilizing the entire leaf to make matcha means consuming higher levels of potentially harmful substances.

Especially if you are consuming matcha daily, youll want to make sure youre choosing organic matcha that is also screened for these toxins and heavy metals.

Nutritional Benefits Of Matcha Tea

Thanks to the unique growing conditions, the tea plants produce higher amounts of amino acids including L-theanine and plant compounds called polyphenols as well as antioxidant nutrients like vitamin C. Matcha is also relatively high in caffeine compared to other teas.

Its worth remembering that the nutritional value of your prepared tea will also depend on the temperature of the water you use so always use hot but not boiling water.

Why Not Drink Green Tea For Weight Loss Instead

First things first, were not throwing green tea under the bus. Its a healthy beverage thats delicious and possesses a lot of the same health benefits as matcha. But the same doesnt always mean equal. Its true that matcha and green tea come from the same plant. It is also true that green tea and matcha are good for weight loss. However, matcha and green tea dont contain equal amounts of the nutrients, amino acids, and antioxidants that give them these special properties. Matcha is significantly more potent, which also means that matcha is better for weight loss.

From the very beginning of the growing process, the plants destined to be matcha are treated much differently than those designated for green tea. Matcha is protected from the sun, in order to preserve its bright green color and all of its nutrients. When ready, the entire leaves are ground into a fine powder, which you then mix up at home. This gives matcha another edge over green tea. Not only are the nutrients in green less potent because theyve been exposed to the elements for longer, but green tea is also only steeped. When you drink matcha, youre consuming the entire leaf, albeit in a powdered form. With green tea, you dip a bag into a cup of warm water and remove it minutes later, simultaneously removing the majority of its nutrients and minerals.

So, the tea thats most beneficial for weight loss is, in fact, matcha.
