Myth : You Cant Compost Paper

You can actually compost most paper including newspaper, white paper and cardboard, but it is best to shred it and to avoid composting glossy paper or paper that is coated as it may contain toxins.

This is especially the case with greasy cardboard and paper that has been used to hold food, such as pizza boxes and brown paper bags. These cannot be recycled because the grease will contaminate the rest of the paper and it is best to compost these.

The paper that you probably shouldnt compost includes receipts as these contain BPA, which could contaminate your soil. These are not recyclable either unfortunately.

Some inks used these days are soy-based and therefore natural and non-toxic and will decompose safely, but unless you are sure all the ingredients used to make your paper are natural, we would recommend not composting it.

So, dont compost types of paper that contain strong dyes, heavy inks or other printing chemicals , but do compost all other paper and cardboard, especially if it is greasy.

Tea And Plastics In Teabags

The loose tea brewed in a teapot or tea ball can be easily composted. Tea leaves are a good source of Nitrogen organic material for the compost bin which will be moistened during the brewing process encouraging decomposition. The tea ball or strainer can be emptied directly into the kitchen caddy while loose leaves can be scooped from the pot into the caddy by hand, once cool.

Teabags are usually listed as compostable items but in recent years more and more composters have complained that the bags do not actually decompose when composted. In 2010 a report by Which? Gardening, found that six out of the seven largest tea bag manufacturers did not make fully compostable bags. This is because at the bags include a non-biodegradable plastic so that they can be more easily heat-sealed during manufacture. The bags may be described as 70% or 80% compostable which includes the tea leaves and paper element of the bag but not the plastic.

Although each individual teabag is small they account for about 150 tonnes of polypropylene going to landfill, AD or composting a year in the UK alone. This is equivalent to about 165 million teabags a day. Many of these are composted in food waste.

Before the current concerns about plastic in teabags the advice when home composting was to use loose leaf tea or if using teabags that did not decomposing during the composting process i.e. non-compostable bags:

Once you find a tea bag that you can compost, the question lies in why you should do it. Even when working with a partially degradable bag, you will ask yourself why you are taking that step.

Can I Compost Tea And Tea Bags

Yes, you can compost loose tea and some tea bags but it depends on the type.

Loose tea leaves will compost down quickly the clue is in the leaves bit of the name! Stir them into the heap to make sure they dont get blown around or, if youve got a lot of them, they dont form a suffocating layer on the top of the heap .

However, tea bags are more complicated because the bag is made up of different things, depending on the company.

While some brands use entirely natural fibres in the tea bags, many of the main brands use synthetic fibres and they dont rot down. Youre left with lots of little white sacks in your compost, or the natural fibres of the bag break down and leave tiny synthetic fibres mixed into your compost instead.

If youre concerned about introducing synthetic fibres into your compost heap, you can either avoid composting your teabags, or empty out the tea into the compost & bin the bag separately. If youre happy with the little fibres though, you can compost the teabags as normal, and just pluck out the little bags that remain after everything else has composted down.

Tea bags that are folded and stapled closed as usually fine to compost though it is recommended to remove the staple and sometimes the string & label too, depending on what theyre made from.

Do Tea Bags Go In Food Waste

The answer to this is NO. You can empty the contents of the teabags into the food waste, i.e. the leaves, but the bag itself is not a food product and should not be added to your food waste bin.

As shown above, some parts of most teabags have some element of plastic in them, some have paper. For this reason, I would recommend adding them to your recycling container.

This partly depends on how your refuse is collected and disposed of and what local rules there are around separating out for waste. To be 100% sure, check with your local authority to find what theyre regulations are.

You can compost both of these, but it is advised that you dont overload your compost heap with them as it can make it too acidic.

And it does take citrus slightly longer than other fruit and vegetables to decompose, so it is often composted in a separate composter that is left composting longer than the households regular one.

Can I Put Tea Bags In The Garden

So the question is, Can I put tea bags in the garden? The resounding answer is yes but with a few caveats. Moist tea leaves added to the compost bin increase the speed with which your pile decomposes.

When using tea bags as fertilizer, either in the compost bin or directly around plants, first attempt to identify if the bag itself is compostable 20 to 30 percent may be composed of polypropylene, which will not decompose. These types of tea bags may be slippery to the touch and have a heat-sealed edge. If this is the case, slit open the bag and discard in the trash and reserve the damp tea leaves for composting.

If you are unsure about the make up of the bag when composting tea bags, you can toss them into the compost and then pick the bag out later if you are feeling particularly lazy. Sounds like an extra step to me, but to each his own. It will be patently obvious if the bag is compostable, as the worms and microorganisms will not break down such a substance. Tea bags made of paper, silk, or muslin are suitable composting tea bags.

Can I Compost Tea Bags

Composting tea bags is a little more complicated than composting pure tea leaves. Therefore, understanding what materials are compostable requires a basic knowledge of tea bag construction.

There are a few different types of tea bags that you might use. Standard paper tea bags are largely compostable, but a few of their parts wont break down in your soil. Heres an overview of each component and whether or not you can add it to your compost pile:

• Paper The paper used in standard tea bags is fully compostable.
• String The string used in standard tea bags is fully compostable.
• Staple The staple that secures the paper tag to the string is not
• Adhesive The adhesive used to heat-seal the edge of the paper tea bag is not compostable.

Pyramid tea bags, on the other hand, are made from a corn-derived plastic called PET, and many arent compostable. Bags that have PET in them should be recycled instead. A few companies offer biodegradable pyramid tea bags. They have the same shape as standard pyramid bags, which allows the leaves to unfurl during brewing, but arent made from PET. Instead, theyre constructed from a different corn-derived material that is fully biodegradable, meaning they can be thrown in your compost pile.

Paper tea sachets that are used for loose leaf tea can be fully composted. These are made out of compostable paper and dont include a stapled tag or heat-sealed edge.
