For example, according to Healthy Food Guide, Fuze Tea green iced tea contains 21g of added sugar per 500ml serving, Lipton’s raspberry iced tea contains 26.1g per 500ml serving, and Arizona blueberry white iced tea contains a staggering 42.5g per 500ml serving.
In its 2015 guidelines , the World Health Organization suggested that adults should consume no more than ten teaspoons of added sugar a day and that keeping it to under five would be ideal. Soft Drinks Worse Than Hard Liquor for Gout, but Diet Sodas OK
Jan 31, 2008 — For gout, sweetened soft drinks are worse than hard liquor — and nearly as bad as beer — doubling the risk for heavy drinkers. Diet sodas, however, don’t affect gout risk.
The findings come from a huge study of 46,393 male health professionals in Canada who filled out detailed questionnaires about their health and their diet every four years for 12 years. Over that time, 755 of the men developed gout.
Compared with men who almost never drank sugar-sweetened soft drinks — fewer than one per month — frequent soft-drink drinkers were significantly more likely to suffer gout:
- Two or more soft drinks each day upped gout risk by 85%.
- One soft drink each day upped gout risk by 45%.
- Five or six soft drinks each week upped gout risk by 29%.
The men who drank the most soft drinks had twice the gout risk of the men who drank the fewest soft drinks.
That’s comparable to the gout risk of men who drink two to four alcoholic beverages a day.
Beer raises gout risk by 49% per daily serving. A daily serving of spirits raises gout risk by 15%. Sweetened soft drinks, find University of British Columbia researcher Hyon K. Choi, MD, PhD, and colleagues, raise gout risk by 35% per serving.
It’s a surprising finding, says Karen Atkinson, MD, MPH, chief of rheumatology at the Atlanta VA Hospital and assistant professor of medicine at Emory University.

Elevated serum uric acid is related to the risk of development of gout, the most common inflammatory arthritis in men. Allopurinol, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, is one of the uric-lowering agents commonly used in patients suffering from recurrent and chronic gout. Nevertheless, its use is limited by adverse effects and serious allergic reaction in some patients.
The study consists of three periods with a total duration of four weeks. The first week is the control period. The following two weeks is the interventional period and the last week is the follow up period. Thirty healthy participants will be randomly assigned into three experimental groups, receiving 2 gm/day, 4 gm/day and 6 gm/day of green tea extract during interventional period. Blood and urine samples will be taken at the beginning and at the end of each study period.

Orange Juice And Gout Risk
Many sugar-sweetened juices can increase your risk for gout, but naturally-sweetened juices like orange juice may also be a gout risk trigger. “In the last 10 years, there has been some evidence from some studies that high fructose in fruit juices may be associated with a higher risk of gout,” says Dr. Freeman. Fructose is a sugar that is added to soft drinks, but it occurs naturally in orange juice, so drinking too much OJ could be as risky as drinking a sugary soft drink.
Tips To Cut Back On Alcohol
Order non-alcoholic drinks when youre out with friends or family. Iced tea, coffee, flavored seltzers or club soda with a lime wedge may be good alternatives to beer or booze.
Set goals. Pick days when you will drink and days when you wont drink. Keep track of it on your calendar. Set a limit for how much you will drink that night and stick to it. Dont save it up for one night per week and overdo it.
