4-6 dandelion tea bags 1 quart water

  • Dried dandelion extract: 0.75 to 1.0 grams daily

Dandelion root supplements are also available in drugstores and vitamin supplement stores. You can also find tinctures, teas, extracts, ointments, powders, and dried organic root in these kinds of shops.

I have to find that Lavender is a great compliment to just about any tea. Its particularly fantastic in a nice black tea where it can let loose lavenders full floral potential without overwhelming the tea itself.

It works great with dandelion flower tea as well however you need to be careful about how much lavender you add in or it will completely overwhelm the flavor of the dandelion flower tea.

If youre using dry flowers I would suggest something along the lines of 80% dandy-lion and 20% lavender at the most.

If you start to get a higher percentage of lavender tea youre basically drinking lavender tea with a tiny bit of dandelion flavor in it.

Its just the nature of how the floral flavor notes of lavender tea are so pronounced that they can easily overwhelm a lot of other flavors in many other herbal flower teas.

A study done in 2002 and published in Nutrition Reviews showed that dandelion was effective at reducing hyperlipidemia in rats. Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by having high lipids level in the body, including cholesterol in the blood.

From the research, it was found that both the levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides in rats greatly declined after the rats were made to eat dandelion flower extracts.

The theory behind dandelion flower extract lowering cholesterol levels is that it inhibits the production of pancreatic lipase, an enzyme that promotes digestion of fat. By restricting this enzymes activity, it alters the way in which the body absorbs fat.

Of course, more research needs to be done on human, but there are positives we can take from this study on rats. We can say that by drinking dandelion tea prepared from flower extracts, you can lower the level of unhealthy cholesterol in the body.

  • Greens: Dandelion leaves are on the bitter side, but they have a spicy kick similar to arugula. Try tossing some fresh, washed leaves into a salad. To take the edge off the bitterness, you can also cook them, Geib says. Soak the leaves in cold, salted water for 10 or 15 minutes, then cook them in boiling water until tender . Finish by sautéing the boiled greens with some olive oil, onion or garlic. Top with Parmesan cheese.
  • Flowers: Dandelions sunny blossoms give color to a salad. Use them fresh or dried to make dandelion tea or brew dandelion wine. You can try infusing them into oil or vinegar, too, Geib suggests.
