What Is On The Teas Test
Thankfully, the TEAS test is similar to most of the standardized tests you’ve already taken in your previous schooling. Most of what you need to know to pass the TEAS are subjects you already covered in high school.
The test has 170 questions divided into four sections:
Reading
- Tests your ability to read and comprehend passages, charts, labels, directions, and measurements.
- 64 minutes long
Science
- Tests your knowledge of physical, life, and earth sciences. This section also tests your scientific reasoning ability and your understanding of the human body.
- 63 minutes long
- Tests your knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and context.
- 28 minutes long
- Tests your ability to solve math problems and measure and interpret data.

Five How To Prepare For The Teas Exam
Allow yourself a minimum of 6 weeks to prepare for the exam. There are also many study resources available for purchase and for free on the website. ATI has a recommended study plan for students taking the TEAS:
- Week 1: English and Language usage
- Week 2: Reading
- Week 5: Science
- Week 6: Math
Each subject can be studied using a manual, lessons, pre-tests, post-tests, quizzes, and practice assessments. Depending on your comfort level in a particular subject, you may want to spend more time on some subjects and less on others. However, the ATI recommended study plan includes recommended hours of study as well.

What Is The Test Of Essential Academic Skills
The Test of Essential Academic Skills is a national standardized test that provides assessment data regarding a students overall academic preparedness for nursing school. The TEAS is a computerized test comprised of multiple-choice questions. Assessment Technologies Institute developed the TEAS. Information for the TEAS is located on line at www.atitesting.com or by calling 800-667-7531.
TEAS exam results are required for applicants to be eligible for admission to the nursing program. Your “Total Score” must be 65% or higher to be considered for admission.
Who Takes The Teas
The TEAS is part of the admissions process for the Associate of Science in Nursing program. If you are applying to the ASN program, the Admissions Team will determine whether or not you need to take the TEAS based on the criteria below, and will let you know if TEAS is a part of your requirements.
You will take the TEAS if your cumulative GPA is lower than a 3.0. If your GPA is between a 2.0 and a 2.99 and you are offered acceptance to Labouré, then you will take the TEAS during your first semester as a placement test to determine participation in the DSN program .
If your GPA is between a 2.0 and a 2.49, you will take the TEAS as an entry test before you receive an admissions decision, and will test again for placement during your first semester if offered acceptance to Labouré.
You will not need to test if you meet any of the conditions below:
- Your cumulative GPA is 3.0 or above
- You have already earned a bachelor’s degree
- You hold a valid LPN license
If you are required to take the TEAS for entry or for placement, your admissions counselor will help you schedule the test on-site or online through Labouré at no cost to you. Labouré is not able to accept test scores from previous tests you may have taken. If you just took the TEAS elsewhere before being asked to take it at Labouré, you must wait at least 2 weeks before scheduling your Labouré test.

Which Version Of The Teas Will You Take
First, these changes will likely not go into effect until June 2022. Your school will likely take the ATI TEAS 6 version for several months during the transition period so dont panic!
Second, the ATI TEAS is definitely testing out new questions right now. These ATI TEAS test questions are likely not scored but they still can appear on the current version of the TEAS.
In fact, Im hearing from students that weird things are happening on the TEAS exam. If you are taking the ATI TEAS in 2021, you are likely getting unscored questions that are test questions for the new version of the TEAS exam.
New ATI TEAS science section questions that Im noticing:
- More acid and base questions on the pH scale
- Using the logarithmic pH scale
- Radiation vs. conduction
- More detailed questions about cellular organelles
That said, the new version of the ATI TEAS isnt going to be too different from the 2021 ATI TEAS exam.

How Hard Is The Teas Test
The TEAS has 4 sections: Reading, Math, Science, and English. Each section has a standardized level of difficulty, and youll need to master roughly 150 different concepts. How hard the TEAS test depends on how familiar you are with the material covered and how prepared you are to pass the test.
The full test includes 4 sections, Reading, Math, Science, and English, and youll get a total of 209 minutes to take the exam, but each section has its own time limit.
Entry Vs Placement Testing
An entry test is part of the application process, and helps determine whether or not you can be accepted into the ASN program at Labouré. You must score at or above the minimum required score thresholds in order to be offered acceptance.
Labouré requires a minimum score of 69% in Reading and 60% in English and Language usage. There are no minimum score requirements for entry testing for Mathematics or Science at this time.
If you are accepted after your entry test, you will follow a My Academic Plan during your first semester at Labouré. MAPs are free online academic modules and resources that are designed by our academic advisors to help you check in during your first semester to ensure you have the tools you need to succeed in the program.
If you have been offered acceptance and you fall into the placement test range, you will take the TEAS during your first semester of enrollment at Labouré to determine your participation in the DSN program. The Student Success Center will provide information on the DSN program, testing dates, and more.

Teas Exam Format And Scoring
The TEAS exam has four components outlined in the chart below.

When you take the TEAS exam, youll receive a Total Score, Content Area scores and Sub-Content Area Scores . Each score type ranges from 0 to 100%, but all are calculated differently.
Your Total Score is your main TEAS exam score. Your Composite Score is what most programs will look at to determine eligibility. Youll typically need to score at least 70% on your Composite, or Total, Score to be a competitive candidate at most nursing programs. Some schools also look specifically at your Reading Comprehension Content Area score.
Every school has different admission requirements, though, so its best to check to see what they are before applying.
