In addition to leavening, baking soda neutralizes strong odors, both acidic and basic. How To Clean A Stainless Steel Travel Mug
A stainless steel travel mug is a good investment because a quality mug can last for many years. When you have that favorite cup and carry it every day, you rapidly become attached to it and needing to find a different mug seems like abandoning an old friend. The trouble is that your old friend can sometimes become a bit soiled and even stinky if you fail to give it the care that it needs.
Many travel mugs come with hand wash only warnings, and only a few are dishwasher safe. One of the main reasons for this lies in the polypropylene and plastic parts that are attached to the outside of the mug. Poly parts are often used to make the threads at the top of the mug, plus handles or handle inserts, grip bands, etc. The reason many of these mugs are not dishwasher safe is that the shape of these parts can sometimes hold water, allowing contaminants to lie in a small channel around the inside of the mug. Hand washing eliminates this since you would normally turn the mug right side up to scrub it, then upside down to dump it, then right side up to rinse it, etc. this repeated turning allows all of the water to flow out of the mug to ensure that it is truly clean.
Stainless steel mugs can sometimes become stained by coffee, tea or other beverages. If you have an older cup that you want to rejuvenate and give some additional life toor if you simply want to remove the stainsyou can try one of these tricks.

Baking Soda And Lemon Method
With this method you are also creating a scrub. However, unlike water which is a neutral agent, lemons are acidic. Acids are helpful at breaking down difficult stains.
What youll need:
- Juice from a fresh lemon
- Baking soda
- Damp paper towel or sponge
Cut a large wedge of lemon . Starting at the rim of the cup, squeeze the lemon all around, coating the entire inside and bottom of the mug. Swirl the juice around so the inside of the cup is coated. Like the baking soda/water method, sprinkle a spoonful of baking soda all around the cup so it sticks to the lemon juice.
When the lemon comes in contact with the baking soda , a chemical reaction occurs. Youll even see and hear fizzing and bubbling. Let the cup sit for a minute, and then take a slightly damp paper towel and wipe away all your tea and coffee stains.
If you dont have a lemon handy, you can also use distilled white vinegar. Like lemon, vinegar is an acid at 2.4 on the pH scale. I prefer to use lemon since it has a pleasant smell.

Simple Cleaning Methods To Tackle Tea Stains On Cups
If you want to know how to remove tea stains from mugs and from your favourite cups, then hereâs a comprehensive cleaning guide thatâs easy to follow, and makes use of cleaning products you may already have in your home:
Baking Soda. Baking soda is considered to be one of the very best multi-function cleaning products. As a mild abrasive, it works away at stains, while not damaging fragile materials. To remove tea stains from cups, wet the inside of the mug with cold water, and sprinkle in a thin layer of baking soda, so that it covers all brown marks . Leave for a few minutes, and then use a cloth or sponge to wipe all around the brown ring. Youâll need to give it a bit of a scrub â it wonât just glide off unfortunately. Follow up by washing as usual with your dishwashing detergent.
Salt & Vinegar. This method sounds more suitable to seasoning fish and chips than cleaning mugs and cups, but it really can work. The technique is very similar to that above, except that you wet the inside of the mug with white vinegar and use regular table salt in place of baking soda. Salt is another mild abrasive that is very effective at lifting stains without causing damage. Always make sure to wash your mug thoroughly afterwards with dishwashing detergent, unless you fancy a vinegar-infused tea in the morning.
