Does Sprouts Sell Matcha Green Tea Powder

Aiya Matcha Ceremonial Grade

How Matcha Is Made (From Plant To Cup)

The third brand of matcha I tried from the grocery store was the Aiya Ceremonial Grade. This is another one that I first saw at my local Publix when I lived in Tennessee Ive since seen it at Sprouts as well. I had been getting the Mighty Leaf brand for a while, which was the only one in stock for a time. When the Publix added this one to the shelf I was curious, so I went ahead and grabbed a tin one day. It comes in a little tin with 30 g of tea powder.

I was also quite pleased with this tea powder and overall had a good experience with it. The powder was a nice green color and mades great lattes. Although I was happy this matcha, I typically still opted for the Mighty Leaf matcha because of the lower price point, and at least in my experience, similar fitness as a latte matcha. At the grocery stores where Ive seen this Aiya tin with a price of $16.99, making the price per ounce the third most expensive per ounce of the options mentioned in this post.

Latte Fitness:

Just How Bad Is Starbucks Matcha Latte

I want to put into perspective just how bad for you a Starbucks Matcha latte is: a 16oz latte has 32 grams of sugar as we mentioned. But guess how much sugar is in a 16 oz coca-cola? Also 32 grams.

Thats seriously dangerous. Because most people choose a Matcha Latte from Starbucks as a Healthy alternative to other drinks. And remember: theres no asking for no sugar. Because the Matcha powder itself is the sugar.

I appreciate that Starbucks services the Matcha latte as it can open the door to people discovering Matcha for the first time. And, thats great!

But frankly, I find that amount of sugar predatory. Especially since its hidden in the powder itself, rather than added by request.

Extra info: In case you were wondering, Starbucks shops in Japan do use real Matcha powder made within the country . But they still add a lot of sugar, meaning its not that much better than the one you drink in the USA.

Where Does The Best Matcha Powder Come From

Currently, the best matcha powder is mainly grown and produced in Japan. Specifically in the following Japanese areas, Uji, Nishio, Shizuoka, and Kyushu. Nishio and Uji are responsible for about 80% of the matcha grown in modern day Japan.

The aforementioned areas are located in southern Japan, this region is said to have the best weather and soil conditions for growing the best quality matcha. Matcha is also produced in China and Taiwan however, most matcha enthusiasts say the highest quality premium matcha powder originates in Japan.

Select Matcha From Japan

Because the production of matcha got its start in Japan rather than in China, home of the earliest known tea bushes, I prefer to buy and use fine quality matcha green tea powder produced in Japan. Some matcha enthusiasts are now hesitant to purchase Japanese matcha due to concern about lasting contamination of naturally grown products from the Fukushima radiation tragedy. However, ongoing environmental tests in Japan do not reveal any harm to vegetation currently from effects of radiation. Yet for matcha users who still worry about this issue, Chinese matcha products are readily available on the global consumer natural products market. Green powdered tea from both countries can produce an awesome cup of tea for total Zen relaxation, complete bodily rejuvenation and ultimate enjoyment.

What Is Ceremonial Grade Matcha

As mentioned above, matcha was, and still is today, used in traditional tea ceremonies. These ceremonies require only the highest quality matcha powder available.

Ceremonial grade matcha is made by grinding the youngest leaf buds on the green tea plant- the younger the leaves, the better the matcha.

Ceremonial grade matcha is also grown with a strict and precise technique of shade growing. Using older green tea leaves equates to a lower grade matcha. The use of the youngest green tea leaves is one of the factors that gives matcha it’s vibrant green color. Additionally, the shade growing process increases the chlorophyll content in the green tea plant, which is also responsible for creating the rich green tones in matcha.

Why You Should Drink Authentic Matcha

Okay, so it’s pretty clear by now that I’m a bit of a tea geek. You only wanted to know what Matcha Starbucks uses in their drinks and I went off on all these weird tangents But it’s because I really believe in drinking authentic Matcha!

It’s such an interesting, flavorful tea that most people peak within their cup at Starbucks. Drinking real Matcha has many benefits:

  • It’s going to taste like what it’s intended to

  • It’s likely to have many more nutrients and antioxidants

  • It’s likely to be more recently ground

  • And it leads to a way better Green tea drinking experience

It goes without saying that consumers want to be sure they are spending their money on a quality product, from a trusted source.

The same goes for matcha.

I believe that is one of the best places to buy matcha green tea powder, hands down, for a long list of reasons.

Mainly due to the fact there is a great deal of variety in regards to brands and grades. In addition, purchasing from Amazon is safe. Amazon is the largest internet-based retailer in the United States, and can be counted on to do right by their customers.

Here at the Matcha Connection, we actually prefer to buy direct from Matcha suppliers that we trust and have developed a relationship with.

How Do You Make Matcha Tea

We asked Michelle Puyane, the co-founder of Chalait, for tips on making matcha.

The most common style of matcha tea is usucha, or “thin tea.” To make usucha, scoop 1 teaspoon of matcha powder into a bowl. Next, heat water to 176 degrees and pour 2 to 4 ounces over the matcha powder. Use a matcha whisk, also called a Chasen, to blend the water and matcha powder briskly whisk in a “W” or “M” pattern for around 20 seconds until the matcha has evenly dissolved. From there the tea is ready to drink. You can add a creamer or more water as well as sweeteners like honey and sugar to suit your taste.

To make a thicker matcha tea, known as koicha, follow the same steps above, but use 1.5 to 2 teaspoons of matcha powder and 1.5 to 3 ounces of water. Instead of quickly whisking in a “W” or “M” pattern, whisk in a slow circular motion until the mixture combines into a thick paste.

Despite how detailed these processes seem, good matcha can be made by simple, even crude, means. Puyane told us: “I get a lot of questions like, ‘How do I make matcha at home?’ ‘Do I need special toolsa bowl, a whisk?’ When it comes down to it, you can make matcha in a protein shaker if you wanted to.”

Kenko Matcha Green Tea

Kenko is known for providing some of the best matcha that you have ever seen. The powder is smooth to the touch and has been ground onto the finest of particles.

Unlike inferior brands of matcha, which sometimes have stems or unprocessed bits of the leaf within the powder, the Kenko matcha is perfection personified. It also makes it a point to maintain a consistent standard when it comes to the taste, as well as the production process.

Kenko makes some of the sweetest matcha tea that you will ever taste and has none of the bitterness that comes through due to impurities or the addition of chemicals.

All of the matcha tea sold by Kenko is harvested from the city of Nishio, where tea experts work day and night to create the best blend possible. The result is a matcha tea that is incredibly good for your health, can be consumed multiple times a day without any kind of ill effects and will become one of the pillars of your healthy lifestyle.

The Truth Behind Starbucks Matcha

The Green Tea Latte at Starbucks is made with milk and the matcha tea blend. According to the nutrition label on the Starbuckâs website, a grande Green Tea Latte has 32g of sugar.

The Tazo Matcha that Starbucks uses has two ingredients: sugar and green tea powder. So if you ask for a Green Tea Latte without sugar, it isnât doing you much good because the mix is pre-sweetened. So, what should you do?

Where To Store Matcha Powder

Matcha should be stored in a cool, dark place. The important thing to remember is to keep your matcha away from light, heat and especially moisture. I have seen some websites recommend storing your matcha in the refrigerator, but I don’t recommend this. Putting a metal container into a cold refrigerator can cause condensation and the last thing you want is moisture in your matcha.

I also make sure that I consume my matcha powder within one month of opening. I always use ceremonial grade matcha, which comes in small metal tins, so it is easy to consume it all within one month.

Matcha Green Tea Latte Recipe

Anyone else a fan of green tea lattes? As a part owner of a artisan coffee roasting company, I must confess that even I, from time to time, will have a visit to SB . But, when I do shamefully walk in, I most commonly order a Green Tea Latte verses their coffee. Recently, a Japanese student of mine introduced me to Matcha Green Tea Lattes, and now Im really hooked. Luckily, these arent served in the big SB so Ill be making them at home or visiting my local tea shop.

After seeing an article in Bon Appetit about Matcha Lattes, I first asked my Japanese student, Yuki, where to get Matcha powder cheaply in the city. She kindly responded that you cant get it cheaply anywhere. Her friend sends her matcha powder in the mail from Japan and even then she only sends a small amount. This stuff is like powdered gold!

The reason why matcha green tea powder is so expensive is because of its many health benefits. The health benefits of matcha tea exceed those of green tea because when you drink matcha you ingest the whole leaf, not just the brewed water. One glass of matcha is the equivalent of 10 glasses of green tea in terms of its nutritional value and antioxidant content. Here are just a few of the health benefits: calms and relaxes, fights against viruses and bacteria, rich in fiber, lowers cholesterol, rich in antioxidants, and boosts metabolism.

Buy Only Organic Matcha

As an organic product from the evergreen Camellia sinensis bush, green tea is recognized and valued for its strong-acting polyphenols, powerful antioxidants. Green tea is not oxidized in comparison to both oolong and black teas, which are oxidized. In order to enhance and emphasize its high caliber attributes over any less attractive characteristics, such as occasional bitterness, green tea is processed through three stages: steaming , rolling and firing. The popular brands of matcha sold today, such as Taste of Kyoto, Dr. Mercola, and Encha all have origins in Japan and are organic matcha varieties. After all, why purchase a health-promoting product that has been blemished and tainted by exposure to harsh, potentially harmful chemicals found in many pesticides and fertilizers?

Matcha Green Tea: What It Is, How To Use It & Which Brand To Buy

There are two main grades of matcha: culinary and ceremonial. The culinary grade matcha is best for cooking and baking while ceremonial matcha is best for lattes.

Ceremonial grade matcha green tea leaves are picked by hand and tend to be more sweet-tasting. They are stone-grounded to reduce heat and friction, which prevents bitterness. As a result of this care and craftsmanship, ceremonial matcha is more expensive than culinary grade but also more flavorful.

Starbucks uses Tazo matcha powder that has two ingredients: sugar and green tea powder. I use ceremonial grade matcha green tea powder that has pure matcha green tea taste.
