New England has a tricky history with tea. At the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum in Bostons Seaport District, that great tea dumping is recalled in fun daily tours. But its also a gem of a place for a cup of tea in Abigail’s Tea Room, with or without a history tour.
Five copper urns bearing those historic blends are ready to sample: Bohea, a black tea, similar to oolong, which was fired or dried over charcoal Congou, a prestigious Colonial American black tea Hyson, an early spring Chinese green tea Singlo, a late spring Chinese green tea with a stronger flavor and Souchong, a black tea with a smoky aroma.
The gift shop is a tea lovers haven, with fine crockery, such as the loveliest tea pots, and also tea blends, including the varieties thrown into the harbor nearly 250 years ago.
Minutes away, along the Harbor Walk, the Boston Harbor Hotels Sea Grilles afternoon tea includes Parisian Palais de Thés tea leaves choose from Darjeeling, Earl Grey, Big Ben , sencha, jasmine, oolong, bai mu dan and herbal tisanes 15 in total. Leaves are spooned into the awaiting pot at table then hot water is poured over the leaves and a timer placed, so you may choose the teas strength: one , three , five minutes.
Vibrant New And Revived Venues
Champalimaud Design came up with the design for the guestrooms and suites, combining heritage architecture with residential comfort and a Bostonian aesthetic. Handcrafted wood, herringbone accents, marble touches and original artwork add a sense of craftsmanship, while the hotels 90 suites, including two presidential suites, come with their very own fireplaces.
The revitalised Newbury Street entrance is now flanked by a landscaped terrace plaza with window awnings and lighting design that enhances the neoclassical façade. Renowned architect Jeffrey Beers designed the hotels public spaces with the aim of invoking the spirit of the buildings timeless legacy.
Meanwhile, hospitality company Major Food Group is at the helm of the hotels 4,000 sq ft glass-enclosed rooftop restaurant, Contessa, which features the interior design of Ken Fulk and a menu pairing Italian dishes with whimsical cocktails. And locals and guests can access The Street Bar via a separate entrance on Arlington Street, transporting guests back to the 1920s with its speakeasy look and feel where classic cocktails are offered alongside an intriguing wine list.
The Library Lounge, which features a selection of books curated by Boston Public Library, lies off the lobby its reserved exclusively for hotel guests, providing a cosy retreat for reading or sampling a cocktail by the fireplace. And this space is joined by The Newbury Salon, relying on a new afternoon tea concept by Major Food Group.

Another conundrum: Are tea bags acceptable or should loose leaf teas always be used? Well, that depends, says Martha Hammann, the owner at Special Teas, a favorite on Church Street in Northborough for 24 years.
We use a combination of loose leaf and tea bags, said Hammann. Bags are often easier and neater for herbal teas. We prefer to brew black, flavored blacks and greens from loose leaves, but there are an increasing number of high-quality, tasty brews to be had from teabags.
The rule of thumb is that bagged teas are automatically of lower quality, and many, many of them are, she added. But, as long as the quality and taste are top notch, Im not opposed to bags.
After Specialty Teas lunch service, afternoon tea with scones, tea sandwiches, pastries and cakes closes out each day. Once or twice a month, there is a fixed menu Sunday Afternoon Tea, usually with a theme, depending on the time of year, or any nearby holidays, such as Valentines Day.

One wintry Saturday at the Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street in Bostons Back Bay, tea service had begun in the beautiful Trifecta lounge. There is barely a spare seat as late morning slips into late afternoon, as couples, friends and families gather for this voluptuous tea.
Here, Jenway tea bags are used: fruity whites and greens, and spiced blacks are prepared away from the table in color-coordinated china pots in bright brilliant designs. The cup sits underneath! The cake stand arrives with its colorful array of bite-sized patisserie: shortbread with lemon custard, cognac-soaked date cake with a 24k gold tuile, a tigre cake with fine chocolate flakes and soft salted caramel, and a cream filled coconut choux bun.
Fruit scones with jam and thick cream, and richly flavored savories such as a Portobello mushroom with truffle-Boursin aioli beet-infused deviled egg with Siberian caviar sliced cucumber laced with whipped feta, and smoked salmon with tangy yuzu cream cheese also add a layer of flavors to explore.
