How To Make Hot Gunpowder Green Tea Properly

Twinings Of London Gunpowder Green Tea, 3.53 oz (Pack of 6)

STEP 1: Boil water.

Instead of just boiling tap water, go for filtered water. The tea only tastes as good as the water tastes.

I always use an electric kettle with a temperature setting to boil water especially for green tea since water temperature makes a huge difference.

If youre boiling water on the stovetop, turn off the heat as soon as it starts to simmer.

Boil some extra water to use for warming up the teapot.

STEP 2: Warm up teapot.

Pour some boiled water into the teapot. Swirl it around to warm up the sides, then throw the water out.

TEA SOMMELIERS TIP: To brew tea properly, always pre-warm the teapot since it helps keep the water temperature stable when the tea is brewing.

STEP 3: Put gunpowder tea into teapot and add hot water.

STEP 4: Cover teapot and steep for 3 minutes.

Steeping it for longer may result in a bitter tea so keep an eye on the time. Keep the teapot covered so that the water stays hot.

STEP 5: Strain gunpowder green leaves and pour hot tea into a teacup.

Product Description

Gunpowder tea is a well-known green tea that has proved very popular over the last few years. It gets its name from its resemblance to the explosive and many years ago sailors refused to load it for fear it would go bang. However, Gunpowder is a name applied by the Chinese to designate a superior leaf type. Inferior grades of these green teas are called Young Hyson or Twankey . Our Gunpowder Green Tea has a sharp, pleasing citrusy taste.

Gunpowder tea is one of the best known green teas in the world, it originated from Zhejiang province and the capital, Hangzhou. There are two possible reasons for it being called Gunpowder, the first is its resemblance to early forms of black powder used in explosives . The second is that the English term may stem from the Mandarin Chinese term for freshly brewed, which is Gang Pao De but the word Gunpowder is now used throughout the tea trade to describe clean, tightly-rolled green leaves. I have seen Gunpowder teas produced in Sri Lanka, India, China, Korea and Kenya. This list is not exhaustive, most tea producing nations will now produce a green Gunpowder tea.

Why Is Green Tea Called Gunpowder

Ping Shui Zhu Cha, is a form of tea in which each leaf has been rolled into a small round pellet called zhu cha, which translates to pearl tea. It is known as gunpowder in the West because the rolled tea leaves resemble powder pellets.

Speaking of Pinshui pearl tea , it is necessary to introduce the place of Pinshui. As a famous market town in the southeast of Shaoxing, Pinshui was already a tea processing and trade distribution center as early as the Tang Dynasty.

Most gunpowder tea produced in surrounding counties and cities such as Zhuji , Shengzhou , Yuyao , and Tiantai was concentrated in Pingshui for refined processing and transshipment export. Therefore, the pearl tea produced in Zhejiang has gradually been called Pingshui Pearl Tea in international trade and has been used until now. Among these production areas, Pingshui gunpowder is the most famous.

WHAT IS GUNPOWDER GREEN TEA? Tasting Jade Fire.

Gunpowder tea, which originated in ancient China, can be dated back to the Tang Dynasty , and the name is derived from its distinct pellet shape. To this day, China remains the top producer of this green tea variation.

Intriguing Looks

After harvesting, the green tea leaves are wilted, steamed, rolled into small balls, and then dried. This practice of rolling the leaves into compact orbs allows them to keep most of their flavor and fragrance.

Once fully processed, the leaves have a dark grayish-green color. Unlike many teas, this variation is made from older, darker, and more mature tea leaves. These darker colored leaves, in turn, produce a tea with a warm golden tone.

Distinct Flavor

While green tea is usually described as having a mild grassy and floral flavor with subtle notes of fruit and bitterness, gunpowder tea has a more distinct and robust taste. Compared to other green teas, this variation is known for having a bold, smokey, and nutty flavor.

Gunpowder tea is usually made with green tea leaves which originate from the Camellia sinensis plant. Usually, green tea contains about 30 milligrams of caffeine per one cup serving, but gunpowder tea often provides slightly more. The amount of caffeine in your cup will depend slightly on the brewing method used and on the quality of the leaves you buy.

If your gunpowder tea comes from oolong tea leaves, you’ll get about 40 milligrams of caffeine per cup and if your gunpowder tea comes from black tea leaves you’ll get about 50 milligrams of caffeine per cup.

High quality tea is usually made from younger leaves, so it should naturally have a bit more caffeine.
