Not Sweet: Too Much Iced Tea Causes Kidney Failure
Office of Public Affairs
Drinking tea is good for your health. It may lower the risk of cancer, it can encourage weight loss, and recent studies have shown tea can help lower blood pressure.
But one Arkansas man discovered there can be too much of a good thing.
In May 2014, a 56-year-old man arrived at Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, complaining of weakness, fatigue and body aches. Doctors discovered that his kidneys were failing. He was placed on dialysis. After questioning the patient, they learned that he drank 16 8-ounce glasses of iced tea daily, which is about 1 gallon.
Iced tea is full of oxalic acid, which, when taken in excess, deposits in your kidneys and mucks up the work of removing waste from the blood, says Scott Youngquist, MD, an emergency physician at University of Utah Health. This patient was drinking 16 8-ounce glasses of iced tea per day for an unknown period of time. This created a load of oxalic acid that his kidneys couldnt handle, leading to renal failure.
Black tea is rich in oxalate, a compound found naturally in many foods. Too much of it can also lead to kidney stones. The man likely consumed 1,500 milligrams of the compound daily. As a comparison, the average person ingests between 150 and 500 milligrams of oxalate each day.
This kind of kidney failure has also been reported due to excessive consumption of star fruit, cucumber fruit, rhubarb and peanuts, Youngquist says.

Too Much Iced Tea Blamed For Mans Kidney Failure
After a 56-year-old man experienced kidney failure, his doctors discovered that his habit of drinking excessive amounts of iced tea every day was likely the culprit, according to a new report of his case.
The mans kidney function has not recovered, and he remains on dialysis, said Dr. Alejandra Mena-Gutierrez, of University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, who treated the patient and wrote the report of his case. The authors of the report stressed that moderation is key when it comes to drinking tea.
We are not advising against tea consumption, Mena-Gutierrez said. If you are healthy and drink tea with moderation, it should not cause damage to your kidneys.
In May 2014, the man was admitted to an Arkansas hospital, feeling weak and achy. Tests showed that his urine had high levels of calcium oxalate crystals, which are the components of kidney stones.
But the man had no family history of kidney disease, nor had he previously had kidney stones, according to the report. To treat his kidney failure, the doctors began dialysis.
The man told his doctors that he drank 16 glasses of iced tea daily. Black tea which was in the iced tea the man drank is a rich source of oxalate, a compound that may contribute to kidney problems if consumed in high quantities.
The doctors concluded that the mans excessive consumption of oxalate in the iced tea likely led to the kidney failure that was progressing rapidly.

What About Black Tea And Kidneys
In my kidney stone definition earlier, I mentioned that stones are caused by substances that crystallize in the kidneys. One of those crystal-forming substances is oxalate.
Well, black tea has a higher oxalate content than many other beverages. Drinking it leads to more oxalates in the urine, and it can promote stone formation if you consume too much .
One particularly memorable case of this occurred in 2014, when a man developed renal failure because he was drinking a gallon of black tea daily, which led to a heavy load of oxalates . Turns out there can be too much of a good thing!

Brewing A New Treatment For Kidney Disease
Swirled in a cup, tea leaves are said to offer a glimpse into the future. Now, Yale researchers have shown that one kind of Chinese tea may change the future for patients with polycystic kidney disease , an inherited genetic disorder in which the formation of multiple renal cysts leads to kidney failure. The disease is the most common life-threatening genetic disorder worldwide, affecting some 12 million people. There is no cure, and the only effective treatments for PKD-induced renal failure are dialysis and kidney transplants.
A team led by biochemist Craig M. Crews, Ph.D., recently showed that triptolide, a compound found in the thunder god vine, a medicinal plant used to make the traditional Chinese tea known as lei gong teng, activates a cascade of molecular events that stops kidney cysts from forming.
Triptolide has been looked at, and is still being looked at, as an anti-tumor agent, explains Crews, associate professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, chemistry and pharmacology. Yet they dont know how it works. Our thinking all along is that wed love to know how it works so that we can anticipate potential side effects as well as come up with different compounds that work in the same way.
Triptolide is now in early clinical trials as a cancer treatment, and the researchers hope their PKD findings will help accelerate clinical tests of triptolide in kidney disease.
How To Prevent Kidney Stones
The risk of formation and growth of stones decreases considerably if the amount of fluid ingested by the patient is increased.
Excluding from the diet all foods and drinks that are not healthy such as processed foods, frying, candy, carbonated beverages.
Reducing or eliminating foods that are high in phosphorus or calcium, as these substances promote the formation of kidney stones.
Drink at least 2 liters of water a day: drinking little water is proven to be the number one risk factor in the formation of stones.
When you drink water, your urine has higher concentrations of minerals that can form stones.
Consumes sufficient magnesium: the deficiency of this mineral is related to the development of stones, as this mineral plays an important role in the absorption and assimilation of calcium.
If you consume a lot of calcium and little magnesium, excess calcium can contribute to stone formation in your kidneys.
Try to eat less sweet foods: sugar alters the relationships between minerals by interfering with the absorption of calcium and magnesium.
Exercise daily, those who are in bed or have a very sedentary life are proven to be more likely to develop stones.
Activity helps the bones not release more calcium than normal.
Avoid soy-derived foods: they can promote the development of kidney stones if youre prone to them because of having high levels of oxalates, they can bind with calcium in your kidney to form kidney stones.

Before You Try A Kidney Cleanse
Kidneys aren’t the most glamorous organs in the body, but don’t let them fool you. These bean-shaped organs perform some powerhouse functions every day.
Located under the rib cage in your lower back, your kidneys clear waste from your body. This is no small task: Every day, your kidneys remove about 2 quarts of excess water and waste products and process about 200 quarts of blood to do it.
Kidneys also release three important hormones: erythropoietin , renin , and calcitriol . Calcitriol also helps maintain calcium for bones and chemical balance in the body.
But do your kidneys need help to function at their best? That’s the basic premise of a kidney cleanse.
This article will explain what a kidney cleanse is and what it purports to do. “Purports” is the key word, because no scientific evidence exists to support the idea that eating certain foods and taking specific vitamins improves kidney health. Instead, you may wish to take other sensible steps before or even in place of a cleanse.

Kidney stones are a painful condition that affect millions of people. The Cleveland Clinic says researchers conclude one in 10 people will get a kidney stone in their lifetimes. Natural options to avoid kidney stones, such as drinking tea, may benefit some people. But the key may lie in which tea individuals consume.
Kidney stones typically form from various substances when there isnt enough urine volume passing through the urinary system. Calcium, oxalate, uric acid, phosphate, and even cystine or xantine can become highly concentrated in the urine and crystalize into stones. A kidney stone may not be diagnosed until it moves out of the kidney into the ureter or urethra, where it can contribute to considerable pain. Symptoms of kidney stones include pain in the lower back, nausea or vomiting, fever or chills, blood in the urine, and inability to urinate.
Kidney stones have to come out one way or another. Some pass with urine and others require surgery. Anyone who has experienced kidney stones in the past likely does not relish their return, making kidney stone prevention a major goal. Drinking tea may help in those efforts, but its important to recognize that not all tea is effective.
