What About Black Tea And Kidneys

In my kidney stone definition earlier, I mentioned that stones are caused by substances that crystallize in the kidneys. One of those crystal-forming substances is oxalate.

Well, black tea has a higher oxalate content than many other beverages. Drinking it leads to more oxalates in the urine, and it can promote stone formation if you consume too much .

One particularly memorable case of this occurred in 2014, when a man developed renal failure because he was drinking a gallon of black tea daily, which led to a heavy load of oxalates . Turns out there can be too much of a good thing!

How To Drink The Kidney Cleanse Tea

When you do a kidney cleanse, it is very important to drink enough liquids to support the cleansing process. A good indication that you drink enough is that you have a strong urine flow, with clear urine color. For this reason, we recommend to use 4 cups of water in the kidney cleanse tea recipe.

If you find that the tea taste is weak, reduce the amount of water to 2 cups. Another option to use this kidney cleanse tea is as a base to other drinks: dilute the tea further with more water or add to other drinks. Consume the drink throughout the day. This may be a better option during the summer.

Many of us love reaching for a refreshing, ice cold drink on a hot summer day, or cozying up with a warm beverage during the dead of winter. But, did you know that the drinks you choose to quench your thirst can have a tremendous impact on your kidney health?

As a nephrologist and Kidney Kitchen® contributor, drink-related questions are some of the most common questions I get. Whether you need to watch out for certain nutrients or have fluid restrictions that you need to stick to, there are ways to enjoy healthy drinks for your kidneys. Remember each person with kidney disease should stick to the food and fluid plan you discussed with your doctor and dietitian, as it addresses your specific kidney function, fluid needs and electrolyte imbalances . Here are five of my favorite drinks that are generally healthy for people with kidney disease:

  • Black coffee Every year, there seems to be a new study that publicizes the benefits of coffee. Drinking coffeemy favorite morning beveragemay help protect you from developing kidney disease and keep your kidneys filtering at a higher level for a longer period of time. Unfortunately, not all coffee drinks are healthy, and if you have kidney disease, you may be limited in what you can add to your coffee. Drinking black coffee, instead of coffee with high-potassium and high-phosphorus milk or high-calorie, sugary drinks, will be your best bet.

    What Are Gut Health Supplements

The gut microbiome houses the trillions of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes residing in the intestines and plays an important role in providing protection against invading pathogens. It also helps regulate different physiological functions such as metabolism, development, and homeostasis of immunity and the nervous system.

An imbalance between healthy and unhealthy gut microbiota can undermine the way these systems function, leading to diseases and disorders throughout the body. Along with a well balanced diet, you can turn to dietary supplements that contain ingredients believed to foster a healthy gut microbiome.

These ingredients include prebiotic fiber, probiotic foods, digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid, licorice root, aloe vera juice, glutamine, ginger root extract or powder, bentonite clay, Amalaki fruit powder, and more.

Does Kidney Detox Tea Actually Work

    Herbs For Kidney Disease

It turns out that very few studies have been conducted on detox teas or detox diets in humans. Of those studies, many were not even credible. They were not peer reviewed, had a flawed study design, or small sample size. Reviews of the evidence have found that there is no clinical research to support claims that these diets eliminate toxins or help with weight management. And if short-term weight loss is achieved, it is not sustainable in the long run.

So we know that the evidence supporting the effectiveness of detox diets is lacking, but are they even necessary to begin with? The answer to that question can be found in our liver and kidneys.

Is Coffee Bad For Your Kidneys

Lets turn our attention to your morning cup of joe. This ones a little more complicated than a yes or no answer when it comes to its effect on kidney health.

First of all, drinking multiple cups of coffee increases levels of potassium in your bloodstream – which your kidneys have to work to filter out. In addition, the creamer you might put in your coffee contains phosphates, which should be avoided by those with kidney disease .

Furthermore, drinking lots of coffee does not hydrate you, so make sure you are drinking enough water along with it to decrease the risk of stones .

Interestingly, coffee may not be all bad for the kidneys! One study showed that consuming one to two cups of coffee may protect against end stage renal failure. The benefit could be due to a phytoestrogen in coffee called trigonelline .

However, more studies are needed, as it is the only study of its kind so far that I found. In a genome-wide association study on coffee and kidney health, the authors also found support for the above conclusions. For now, the evidence so far seems to indicate that coffee has a protective effect .

The University of Chicago notes that coffee contains low levels of oxalates which is part of the reason they also agree that overall it has a protective effect. But bear in mind the caffeine side described earlier .

    What Is A Kidney Cleanse

Kidneys should function just fine if you drink enough water and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

In general, kidneys don’t require any special “cleaning.” But a poor diet, exposure to toxins, and chronic stress can impair kidney health. In this case, a kidney cleanse may appeal to you.

A number of products, foods, or specialized diets claim to detoxify the kidneys. The idea is to promote healthy kidneys and prevent kidney stones.

Kidney cleanses are also touted to help keep blood pressure in check, improve how the urinary tract and bladder function, boost immunity, and clear toxins from the body.

But proceed carefully. A kidney cleanse might offer some health benefits, not necessarily related to the kidneys at all. You may even swear that you “feel better.”

But there is no scientific evidence that a cleanse improves kidney health or prevents kidney stones and infection.

Green Tea Side Effects On Kidneys

Green tea can be possibly unsafe if it is consumed in a high quantity that is 7-8 cups a day because it also contains caffeine, which is not good for kidney diseases but there are very few instances of this.

If green tea is taken in larger quantity then it may disrupt kidney function by diminishing anti-oxidant enzymes and expression of heat-shock proteins. This happens due to the toxicity of polyphenols present in green tea.

People suffering from high blood pressure should consume green tea in less quantity due to the presence of caffeine in it. As it enhances the chances of the risk of kidney disease and even declines the rate of kidney functions. Thus leads to a sudden increase in blood pressure.

Hence, green tea has many potential benefits and can also be consumed during kidney problems. But if you have any doubts or you face any complication then you can consult your healthcare expert and can know more about it.

There are a number of known kidney cleanse herbs that can further improve the kidney cleanse due to some unique properties. For this reason, many kidney cleanse teas and drinks contain herbs known to cleanse, detox and support healthy kidney and bladder function.

Getting fresh high quality kidney cleansing herbs however, is not always possible. Brewing A New Treatment For Kidney Disease

    Herbal teas for Kidney Support.

Swirled in a cup, tea leaves are said to offer a glimpse into the future. Now, Yale researchers have shown that one kind of Chinese tea may change the future for patients with polycystic kidney disease , an inherited genetic disorder in which the formation of multiple renal cysts leads to kidney failure. The disease is the most common life-threatening genetic disorder worldwide, affecting some 12 million people. There is no cure, and the only effective treatments for PKD-induced renal failure are dialysis and kidney transplants.

A team led by biochemist Craig M. Crews, Ph.D., recently showed that triptolide, a compound found in the thunder god vine, a medicinal plant used to make the traditional Chinese tea known as lei gong teng, activates a cascade of molecular events that stops kidney cysts from forming.

Triptolide has been looked at, and is still being looked at, as an anti-tumor agent, explains Crews, associate professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, chemistry and pharmacology. Yet they dont know how it works. Our thinking all along is that wed love to know how it works so that we can anticipate potential side effects as well as come up with different compounds that work in the same way.

Triptolide is now in early clinical trials as a cancer treatment, and the researchers hope their PKD findings will help accelerate clinical tests of triptolide in kidney disease.
