One of the antioxidants present in green tea, Epigallocatechin Gallate or EGCG, helps stimulate the metabolism of the body. It stimulates the central nervous system which releases the fat into the bloodstream and the body uses the fat as fuel which produces extra energy. This sheds the extra water and also helps to burn fat.

There is some evidence that shows that EGCG helps reduce weight which is present in green tea. But if you believe that you can lose your pounds just by drinking tea then youve been misled.

Antioxidants & Weight Loss

Antioxidants are plant compounds that help us to fight against free radicals particles that increase oxidative stress in our bodies. As green tea is minimally processed, it contains more antioxidants, and subsequently health benefits than black tea.4

Green tea contains a group of antioxidants called polyphenols, which make up to 30% of its dry weight. Most of these are flavonols, commonly known as catechins. Green tea catechins have been subject to many studies, with scientists becoming more and more interested in catechins ability to aid fat loss.

Tea catechins, particularly EGCGs , appear to have anti-obesity effects. This can be due to a number of reasons. Recent findings from human studies have found that consuming green tea and green tea extracts may help to reduce body weight and fat, by increasing our bodies metabolism and fat oxidisation.

One study on obese males found that EGCG alone has the potential to increase fat oxidisation in humans. Participants who were given 300mg of EGCG for two days experienced increased fat oxidisation than those given a placebo.5

A lot of studies into green tea use green tea extract, which is more potent than a cup of brewed green tea. Thats not to say you cant match the content of green tea extract with the drink, youll just have to drink more.

Green Tea And Weight Loss: What The Research Says

In a double-blind cross over study, investigators found that 300mg of green tea extract, combined with 150mg of caffeine significantly increased fat oxidation rates at rest, and were 20% higher than the placebo of caffeine alone .

During exercise fat oxidation rates increase 10-fold, due to the energy demand of energy that your muscles require . In a study published in the Journal Of Clinical Nutrition two studies were performed to determine if green tea extract can help with weight loss by promoting fat oxidation at rest and during moderately intense exercise. In study A, 12 healthy men performed a 30-min cycling exercise at 60% of maximal oxygen consumption before and after supplementation. In study B, 11 healthy men took an oral-glucose-tolerance test before and after supplementation. The results indicated that with 900 mg of green tea extract supplemented per day, fat oxidation rates increased by 17% during moderate-intensity exercise and can improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance .

In yet another study, male subjects who supplemented with 570mg of green tea extract, for a period of 8 weeks, combined with moderate exercise 3 times per week, found that fat oxidation levels were 24% higher than the placebo, confirming a significant increase in metabolic rate. .

Consequently, more studies are needed to confirm these effects and evaluate the dose and content of tea catechins and caffeine required to achieve expected results on weight loss.

Weight Loss Benefits Of Green Tea

Green tea not only boosts metabolism to help you lose weight, but also works in other ways for the same purpose. It is low in calories and has exceptional thermogenic properties, making it a must-have beverage in your diet.

  • Aids Fat Burn During Workout:

It is an excellent fat-burning, pre-workout drink, which helps accelerate weight loss. As per a study, green tea helped burn 17% more fat in people who consumed it along with workouts than non-drinkers.

  • Stimulates Weight Loss Through Increased Fat Oxidation:

As EGCG triggers increased oxidation of fat deposits in the body, it has an impact on both visceral and subcutaneous fat deposits, promoting the loss of harmful fats. It is thus a favoured weight loss drink, especially to get rid of harmful belly fat. Regular, monitored consumption of green tea also prevents future fat gain.

  • Improves Digestive Health:

Green tea helps in processing sugars and carbohydrates, which regulate insulin and blood sugars. Regulated blood sugar helps our body to prevent weight gain by avoiding unhealthy cravings.

  • Activates Good Fat:

The bio-actives in green tea help shrink white fat cells and increase brown fat, which is a healthy fat. The shrinkage triggers the release of fat cells, which the body can then utilise. The brown fat helps burn calories, prevents white fat gain, and improves insulin levels in the body.

Caffeine seems to be stronger when the tea is hot too, so thats another bonus for hot green tea.

As for the fat-burning properties of green tea ? Again, stronger when the tea is hot.

These properties are still there in a cold green tea. Theyre just not as effective.

This is mostly because the way the tea is brewed. You see, green tea is a very sensitive tea. Its meant to be extracted by water of 80 C/176 F temperature, for about 3 minutes. Depending on the tea quality, it might need more time.

Foods That Will Never Help You Lose Weight

  • One of these three things, of course, is green tea. In his Insta Reels, he mentions that you will lose weight drinking green tea only if you drink more than 20 cups in a day. And this of course, is not possible.
  • The other thing popular for aiding weight loss, but will never help you lose weight is apple cider vinegar. Shocking as it may sound, but yes apple cider vinegar will not help you lose weight, Dr Bhargava asserts. It may improve your skin and hair but it will certainly not help you lose weight.
  • Lastly, coconut oil is the third food item which will not help you lose weight. It is a healthier cooking oil as compared to vegetable oil or refined oil, but it is a source of fat and is high in calories.

The basic of weight loss is to create a calorie deficit, which means that you burn more calories in a day than you burn. “Keep in mind that losing weight is all about creating a calorie deficit. No ingredient can single-handedly help you in shedding kilos,” says Dr Bhargava.

It has to be a combination of a healthy and nutritious diet, while practicing portion control, and regular and consistent exercise. Be physically active throughout the day, quit smoking and drinking alcohol, sleep well and take less stress. All of these will together aid effective and sustainable weight loss.
