Limited research has suggested cranberry may be beneficial for managing an enlarged prostate and prostatitis. One study included men who had lower urinary tract symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate. Study participants who took 1,500 mg of dried powdered cranberries every day for six months experienced a significant improvement in their symptoms when compared with men who took a placebo.

In another study, rats with chronic bacterial prostatitis were given either cranberry, ciprofloxacin, E. coli extract, or no treatment . Rats given cranberry showed a significant reduction in inflammation of the prostate and in bacterial growth when compared with the control group.

Its also possible that cranberries may help with side effects following a prostate biopsy, which may include trouble urinating and urinary urgency. Proanthocyanidins are potent antioxidants, and their immune-boosting abilities can help avoid possible infection after a prostate biopsy.

Treating Prostate Cancer With Green Tea

Green Tea Reverses Precancerous Prostate Lesions

Written By Michael Greger M.D. FACLM on January 23, 2020

Green tea has been natures defense against cancer. Population studies linking green tea consumption with lower cancer risk have led some to advocate for the incorporation of green tea into the diet so as to fully benefit from its anticarcinogenic properties. What, after all, is the downside?

But, population studies cant prove cause and effect. Indeed, it is not possible to determine from these population-based studies whether green tea actually prevents cancer in peopleuntil it is put to the test.

What if you already have prostate cancer? A proprietary green tea extract supplement was given to 26 men with confirmed prostate cancer for an average of about a month before they had their prostates removed, and there was a significant reduction in a number of cancer biomarkers such as PSA levels, suggesting a shrinkage of the tumor. However, there was no control group, and the study was funded by the supplement company itself. When an independent group of researchers tried to replicate the results in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, they failed to find any statistically significant improvement. Perhaps green tea is only effective in the precancerous state and not powerful enough to meaningfully impact overt prostate cancer?

Green Tea & Breast Cancer

Other researchers reported that an extract from green tea, Polyphenon E, may help inhibit breast cancer by affecting substances called growth factors. Growth factors are involved in the signals that tell breast cancer to grow.

In earlier research, Katherine Crew, MD, assistant professor of medicine and epidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, had assigned 40 women already treated for breast cancer to take 400, 600, or 800 milligrams of the extract or to take a placebo twice daily for six months.

That was a study to examine any toxic effects of the extract. For the current study, she evaluated blood and urine samples from 34 of the women to see how the extract might work as a cancer fighter.

“We wanted to better understand the biological effects,” she says.

“After two months of Polyphenon E, there was a reduction in hepatocyte growth factor,” she says. This is one of the growth factors that affect breast cancer cell growth, spread, and invasion. That reduction declined and was not different from the placebo group at four months, however.

It’s still too early to recommend green tea extract as a way to prevent breast cancer, Crew says.

Benefits Of Green Tea

Green tea is the most populous tea grown on the planet and actually comes from the same plant as regular black tea, known as camellia sinensis. This is found in China, where it has been drunk since at least the 7th century, serving generations and remaining a staple of go-to drinks. More recently in the Western World, it has developed a reputation as one of the healthiest drinks available and it seems that every other product is infused with green tea to promote better overall health. So what is green tea all about? Well, lets find out. Here is our list of 10 benefits of green tea for men.

Bph: Can Green Tea Cure It

Green Tea Benefits For Prostate Health
  • BPH: Can Green Tea Cure It?
  • For men, living long enough means you are going to have problems with your prostate. While the prostate is typically a small, walnut-sized gland in young males, it undergoes two phases of growth later on in life which often result in urinary problems. The first phase of growth occurs during puberty and usually doubles the size of the gland, while the second phase of growth begins at around 25 and continues for the rest of your life leading to benign prostatic enlargement . More than 50 percent of men have BPH by the age of 60 and experience urinary difficulties. Although prescription medications are commonly used to treat BPH, herbal supplements may provide much needed relief during the initial stages of the condition. One such herbal solution is green tea.

    What Do The Studies Say

It is worth noting that most studies into green tea have been done outside the human body, for example, in lab cultures or animals. These studies also use concentrated versions of polyphenols, not the green tea itself, or other whole foods.

Overall, specific polyphenols, some of which occur in green tea, have been found to treat the causes and symptoms of BPH. This suggests that green tea could assist in managing BPH alongside medications and other treatments.

    Ginger Extract Arrests Cell

Several dietary agents have been shown to arrest the cell cycle, leading to growth inhibition and apoptosis. For example, grape seed proanthocyanidins, green tea polyphenols, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, resveratrol , silymarin/silibinin , genistein , curcumin and ginger affect cell-cycle progression at various stages by specifically modulating cell-cycle-associated proteins. Specific gingerols, such as 6-gingerol and 8-gingerol, have been shown to perturb cell-cycle progression as a chemopreventive strategy. Thus, our next aim was to gain mechanistic insights into GE-mediated antiproliferative activity by determining the specific cell-cycle stage at which GE intervenes. To this end, we examined the cell-cycle distribution profile of GE-treated PC-3 cells by employing a flow cytometric assay using the DNA intercalator dye, propidium iodide. shows the effect of varying GE dose levels on cell-cycle progression of PC-3 cells at 24 h of treatment in a three-dimensional disposition. As shown in , exposure of PC-3 cultures consistently resulted in a statistically significant dose-dependent enrichment of the sub-G1 fraction, suggesting considerable apoptotic cell death. The sub-G1 population increased from approximately 6 % at 100 g/ml to approximately 99 % at 1000 g/ml. bar-graphically depicts the percentages of G1, S, G2/M and sub-G1 phase populations in PC-3 cells upon treatment with varying GE doses .

    Questions And Answers About Calcium

    Green tea good for prostate
  • What is calcium?

Calcium is a mineral that is needed for basic blood vessel, muscle, and nerve functioning, for sending signals from cell to cell, and for releasing hormones. It is the most common mineral in the body. The body stores calcium mainly in bone tissue.

  • How is calcium given or taken?

The main sources of calcium are in foods and dietary supplements. About one-third of dietary calcium comes from milk and milk products like cheese and yogurt. Vegetable sources include Chinese cabbage, kale, and broccoli. Foods may have calcium added, such as fruit juices and drinks, tofu, and cereals.

Most research about calcium and prostate cancer risk has studied calcium in the diet and not calcium in supplements.

  • Have any laboratory or animal studies been done using calcium?

See the Laboratory/Animal/Preclinical Studies section of the health professional version of Prostate Cancer, Nutrition, and Dietary Supplements for information on laboratory and animal studies done using calcium.

Whole Ginger Extract Has Promising Anti

In a first of its kind study, assessing anti-cancer properties of ginger as a whole instead of the plants individual components, scientists at Georgia State University have discovered, that whole ginger extract has promising cancer-preventing activity in prostate cancer.

According to an online article in FirstView published in the British Journal of Nutrition, Associate professor of Biology, Ritu Aneja discovered in her lab, that ginger extract had significant effects in stopping the growth of cancer cells, as well as in inducing cell death in a spectrum of prostate cancer cells.

In addition, animal studies revealed that the extract did not show significant toxicity to normal tissues, such as bone marrow. Research revealed very good tumor regression by up to 60 percent, and no toxicity whatsoever.

Despite much research having been performed on anti-cancer properties in ginger, Anejas lab prefers to take a more holistic approach to investigate the types of molecules involved. She does not believe individual compounds are solely responsible for the extracts anti-cancer properties and considers it to be a synergistic interplay of components, enabling scientists to use much smaller amounts of extract to benefit from its properties instead of using a single chemical.

Data evaluation shows that humans would have to consume only about 3½ ounces of whole ginger extract in their daily diet to achieve the beneficial effects.

Green Tea & Prostate Cancer: Implications

The best drink for your enlarged prostate

Prostate cancer is typically a slow-growing cancer, Henning says. That makes it an ideal cancer to try diet interventions to slow it even more.

“Green tea is high in polyphenols and it’s convenient,” she says.

Other research has found that green tea may slow prostate cancer. An Italian study found that men who had a precursor to prostate cancer and drank green tea were less likely to get prostate cancer, Henning says.

Now, Henning is studying whether adding quercetin, an antioxidant found in apples and onions, to the green tea will ramp up its cancer-fighting ability.

Sumanta Pal, MD, assistant professor of medical oncology at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif., reviewed the study findings for WebMD.

“Studies such as this are critical to confirm or support a plausible explanation for how green tea may work,” he says. More study is needed, however, before making any diet recommendations.

Green Tea Catechins And Risk Of Pca

Only 3 RCTs were included to investigate the association of green tea catechins with the risk of PCa. And the study populations were patients with high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia or atypical small acinar proliferation . PCa incidence was the main outcome of these studies. The I2 standing for heterogeneity was 2.9% which indicated there was no heterogeneity among the included trials, and a fixed-effect model was used. As shown in Fig. , green tea catechins had a significant effect on the reduction of PCa risk compared to placebo with an RR of 0.38 , indicating green tea catechins could reduce the PCa risk in patients with HGPIN or ASAP significantly. Because of the insufficient quantity of the studies, neither subgroup analysis nor doseresponse analysis was conducted in these RCTs of green tea catechins and PCa risk.

Forest plot for the association of green tea catechins and PCa. The association was indicated as RR with the corresponding 95% CI. The RR estimate of each study is marked with a solid black square. The size of the square represents the weight that the corresponding study exerts in the meta-analysis. The CIs of pooled estimates are displayed as a horizontal line through the diamond. RR< 1 indicates decreased risk of PCa. CI=confidence interval, PCa=prostate cancer, RR=relative risk.
