How To Make Iced Chai Tea Latte Starbucks At Home. 1 cup triple filtered ice 1/3 cup highly concentrated chai 1 cup 2% milk

A 12 ounce chai latte at starbucks, without customization, is made with sweetened chai tea concentrate and steamed 2% milk. A dirty chai tea latte is a normal chai tea latte plus espresso.

The Matter Of Chai Concentrate With Starbucks Copycat Chai Tea Latte

One of the biggest barriers to recreating a near-perfect Starbucks chai tea latte is the chai concentrate. This is the base of the drink, containing both black tea and spices. In most cases, it is found in liquid form.

Now, store bought chai concentrate is readily available. There are also a lot of different brands to choose from, the most common one being Tazo chai concentrate. The problem, though, is that these chai concentrates – Tazo chai concentrate included – are quite diluted.

The Starbucks chai concentrate is very strong and you are unlikely to find anything quite like it in the store. As a result, the Starbucks chai tea latte has a more powerful flavor that is noticeable even with the addition of milk. This is true even when ice is added with the Starbucks iced chai latte,

With regular store bought concentrate, much of the flavor is lost when you add milk or any other ingredients to the drink. Fortunately, there are a few options for overcoming this problem:

Is Chai Tea Latte Good For You

I know a lot of people are wondering if Chai Tea Latte is a healthy drink. For the most part the answer to this question will depend on a specific Chai Tea Latte variety you are consuming and how much sugar you use. But because today I am sharing Starbucks Chai Tea Latte, my answer will be connected to this specific drink. So I would say that this Chai Tea Latte is somewhat healthy. The healthy part is the spice infused tea. The benefits of these spices include its anti-inflammatory effects that can help ease arthritis, preventing and treating nausea, aiding digestion, and reducing the risk of heart disease. The unhealthy part is sugar. One 12 oz. cup of the Chai Tea I am sharing with you, contains about 18g. of sugar . I recommend treating this drink as a dessert and consume it in moderation.

*options For Sweetening Your Chai Tea Latte Concentrate

Youll want to add a sweetener of choice to your chai tea latte to get that traditional coffee shop taste. Here are your two options:

  • Stir sugar into tea after you remove the tea bags, when the concentrate is still hot.
  • Add sugar to your individual latte as you make it, which allows you to add it more or less to taste.

What Is A Starbucks Chai Tea Latte

A Starbucks chai tea latte is made from a mixture of chai tea concentrate and steamed milk.

Chai tea concentrate is the primary ingredient in all Starbucks Chai drinks and is an infusion of black tea and several components, including cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger. We all know that a latte is a drink made of espresso and steamed milk.

Well, the chai tea concentrate replaces the espresso in a chai tea latte. We will look at the main ingredients of the chai tea latte in a bit. First, lets see if the Starbucks chai tee latte contains syrup or caffeine.

Chai Tea Latte Calories

The calories in a chai tea latte depend on which type of milk you use and how sweet you like your drink.

For instance, a grande Starbucks chai tea latte made from whole milk has 270 calories .

One of the reasons I like to make mine at home is because you can vary the sweetness as well as which type of milk you use which directly affects the chai tea latte calories.

My recipe only has 79 calories and tastes just as delicious!

The Best Tea For Chai Latte

Loose-leaf black tea is best for brewing chai for lattes. Ideally, it is made with an Assam or Ceylon tea, but English Breakfast or other black tea blends work wonderfully too. Loose-leaf tea is generally of a higher quality than bags, with large pieces and less dust, which can lead to bitter or tannic tea. Since we have to strain out the spices before making our chai latte anyway, bagged tea would be no time-saver here.

That being said, if bagged black tea is all you have on hand or is one you particularly love, then by all means, use it! Youll want six bags for each batch of chai.

How To Make Chai Tea Latte Mix

How I Make An Ice Chai Tea Latte Like Starbucks

Its actually quite simple to make your own Chai mix. I recommend mixing powdered versions of cardamom, allspice, nutmeg, and cloves in equal parts. Then add double the amount of cinnamon and ginger powder. You can keep the spice blend stored in an airtight jar and add a few tablespoons to a pot of milk whenever youre in the mood for a latte. Dont forget to add black tea if you want the caffeine. You can do this either in bag form, or by adding it in loose leaf and straining it out. Use a frother or whisk to thicken the milk!

Whats In A Chai Tea Latte

The fragrant drink weve come to know and love in the U.S. is made from black tea, milk, spices and sweetened with sugar.

The drink originated in India hundreds of years ago but just started to gain traction in the U.S. in the 1990s.

The western version of chai usually has a lighter and sweeter taste than the Indian version.

What Kind Of Milk Can I Use To Make A Chai Tea Latte

You can use any kind of milk you like in a chai tea latte. The higher the fat content in milk, the more froth you will get. I was trying to recreate the same drink I ordered at Starbucks for this recipe, so that is why I chose skim milk.

I would tell anyone trying this for the first time to use the milk they enjoy the most. You can always try it other ways, but start off with the milk you would normally drink. I use an electric milk frother to make the process easy. The one I use comes with different attachments you can use in the mixer. Depending on how you like your milk frothed will determine which attachment to use.

Pour Chai Concentrate In A Cup

Fill a drinking cup or mug halfway with Tazo black tea chai concentrate. Tazo recommends using equal parts of chai and milk. If youre using another brand, be sure and follow their instructions.

If the box of chai is unopened and room temperature, theres no need to heat it up.

However, if its been in the refrigerator, you need to warm the chai up. You can do this using a microwave or on the stove.

That being said, it doesnt need to be super hot since steamed milk will be poured over it.

The Choice Of Utensils

Homemade Chai Tea Latte

To make a perfect tea latte, you will need some basic utensils. They include a kettle and a teapot or a strainer to brew tea, and something to steam and froth the milk. The easiest way to brew tea is using a teapot with a strainer, cotton tea filter, or a tea infusing basket. If you have a coffee machine or a milk steamer where you can steam and froth the milk, you wont need any other utensils. Alternatively, you can use the microwave or boil the tea on the stove.

Chai tea is a fragrant, spicy tea that may help boost heart health, reduce blood sugar levels, aid digestion and help with weight loss. Although most of these health benefits are backed by science, its worth noting that they are generally linked to the ingredients used in chai tea rather than chai tea itself.

Does A Chai Latte Have Caffeine

Yes, chai lattes have caffeine since they are made using black tea.

However, you can adapt the recipe if you are trying to avoid caffeine. For example, you can substitute the black tea for rooibos.

Unfortunately, Starbucks does not have a decaffeinated chai latte on their menu.

Chai Concentrate From Tea Bags

EASY CHAI TEA LATTE RECIPE | How to make homemade chai tea lattes, no powder or mix needed!

This is my favorite method because chai tea bags are easy to find and have a long shelf life. You can also use as much of any sweetener of choice or make a sugar free chai latte. You can easily whip up a small or large batch of the concentrate and you only need 2 ingredients, chai and water. I steep 2 tea bags in about ½ cup of boiling water for about 8 minutes. Sweeten with honey, sugar, brown sugar, stevia, monk fruit, Splenda, etc.

Does Starbucks Have A Skinny Iced Chai Latte

Now that you see how Starbucks makes an iced chai latte, you may be wondering if your barista can make it skinny.

A skinny Starbucks drink is made with:

  • Non-fat milk
  • Sugar-free syrups
  • No whipped cream

Unfortunately, Starbucks no longer has a low or no sugar version of their chai concentrate. Although, store brands like Tazo have reduced sugar versions.

So if you order a skinny iced chai latte, the best a barista can do is use non-fat milk. Just beware, the concentrate still has plenty of sugar in it.

Since this drink does not have whipped cream, thatâs not an issue.

What Is A Chai Tea Latte & Whats In It

A chai tea latte is just like a regular latte you would get in a coffee shop but instead of using espresso and steamed milk, the espresso is substituted with spiced tea instead. The name chai is the Hindi word for tea. The traditional ingredients of the spiced tea blend is black tea mixed with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger and black peppercorns. Chai tea becomes a latte when you add the steamed and frothed milk to it.

Starbucks Chai Concentrate Is Not The Same As Chai Concentrates Sold In Stores

Since Starbucks uses a highly concentrated chai, it has more flavor per ounce than the less-concentrated versions sold in stores.

For instance, look at the photo below. I did a side-by-side comparison of Tazo chai latte black tea concentrate to Starbucks. The differences are obvious.

  • The Starbucks concentrate is darker than Tazo.
  • It also has a stronger aroma than Tazo.
  • And the Starbucks sample has way more flavor.

Unless you make your own very strong concentrate, do not use the same proportions of concentrate to milk as the Starbucks recipe. The latte will come out too weak.

In case youre wondering, a grande iced chai latte is 25% concentrate and 75% milk, plus ice.

Clearly you need to use more Tazo concentrate , otherwise the milk drowns out the spicy goodness. In a nutshell, this is why itâs difficult to replicate a Starbucks iced chai latte at home using store ingredients. Think about it as you add more concentrate, the proportions of milk and chai change.

The Tazo box, says to use half concentrate and half milk to make a latte. Dont get me wrong, this will still make a very tasty drink, but its half water and half milk. The Tazo version just isnt as full and creamy as Starbucks.

Regular Black Tea Latte

Homemade Chai Tea Latte

Regular black tea latte is a good starting point in earning how to make a perfect latte. Black tea is the easiest to brew out of all types of tea, it has the strongest flavor and almost any black tea will taste good with some milk. Besides, it goes well with sugar or other sweeteners too. If you want to perfect your skills, try choosing different types of black tea. Flavored teas such as Summer Nights, Pumpkin Spice Black, Simple Earl Grey or Honeyed Black tea all make for a wonderful cup of tea latte.
