Todays gourmet teas are a far cry from yesteryear when few varieties of teas were available. Choices were usually limited to black tea, oolong or green tea.

My Travel Mug Tastes Like Soap

    Clean Stained Mugs Fast

If your tumbler tastes like soap, you simply need to rinse it out better. Often, it is the lid that was not rinsed well, so take extra care with it and the soapy smell should soon be gone.

If rinsing does not get rid of it, use a vinegar and baking soda solution to soak the inside of the cup and the lid for 30 minutes or so, then rinse. And, of course, stop using that brand of soap in the future.

    Tips Before You Start Cleaning

The material of your mug will influence which cleaning method you should use. First, I noticed that certain methods work better on certain materials than on others. Second, some methods may also react differently with certain materials.

With this in mind, if you care about your mug its important to test out a cleaning solution on a small part of your mug first. Its like when you buy a new cream, or makeup first try it on a small part of your face or hand before applying it everywhere to see if you have a reaction.

How To Clean Stainless Steel Travel Mugs

Cleaning a metal mug is actually exactly the same as cleaning other types of mugs. Sometimes stainless steel coffee mugs are thinner and longer, which makes it hard to get inside them and scrub them clean. You can use a toothbrush for the sides, but getting the bottom is harder.

A specialized brush like the type included in the cleaning set mentioned above work the best. Personally, I dont even bother scrubbing. I just soak it overnight in Oxi Clean as described in the previous section. Then you just need to rinse it out and youre good to go.

    Baking Soda And Water Method

How to get tea and coffee stains off cups

With this method you are creating a scrub. Baking soda is perfect for the job since it is a mild abrasive and should not scratch your drinkware. Its abrasive enough to get rid of the stains, but not so abrasive that it ruins the surface of your mug. However, if youre concerned about scratches, test a small section first.

    What youll need:

    • Baking soda
    • Damp paper towel or sponge

Pour a small amount of water in your stained cup beginning at the rim and swish it around. The goal is to get the entire inside of the cup wet. Dump out any excess water.

Next, sprinkle in a tablespoon or so of baking soda so it sticks to the water and forms a paste. I like to let it sit for a few minutes.

Finally, take a slightly damp paper towel or sponge and wipe out the baking soda and with it, the tea stains. You will notice that the paper towel turns brown from the coffee or tea. Note: make sure the towel or sponge is NOT soaking wet since the baking soda needs to be abrasive,

To finish things off, use the same paper towel to rub off any drip stains on the outside of the cup. Rinse the cup out with clean water and youre done. Like magic, your cups will go from dingy and stained to looking new.

    Why Does Tea Stain

The deep brown, or black, colour of tea makes it one of the worst offenders for staining â it will stain practically everything it can. In some parts of the world, tea and coffee is even used as a dye for clothing. So, why is removing tea stains from cups notoriously difficult to do?

It all comes down to polymerisation, which is where two molecules react together, forming one big molecule. In terms of tea and coffee, one molecule is an organic chemical found in the beverages, and the other is oxygen. The longer a stain is left on a tea cup, the more opportunities for polymerisation, and the bigger the stain will get. If the brown marks arenât tackled, theyâll simply grow and grow over time, until it might seem like youâre left with more stain than cup.
