Researchers from the Biomedical Research Centre at the University of Salford recently found that matcha goes after breast cancer stem cells in some remarkable ways.

Even at small doses, matcha green tea caused these dangerous cells to become dormant, so they couldnt reproduce and spread.
The effects on human breast cancer cells were very striking, the active ingredients in matcha having a surgical effect in knocking out certain signaling pathways. Our results are consistent with the idea that matcha may have significant therapeutic potential, mediating the metabolic reprogramming of cancer cells, said Michael Lisanti, professor of translational medicine at the Biomedical Research Centre.
Basically, matcha green tea reprograms cancer cells in a way that prevents them from refueling. Eventually, they become inactive and die. And, as we all know, the only good cancer cell is a dead one.

But matcha green tea could be used to treat cancer – not just shed the pounds from your stomach, according to new research.
Laboratory trials have revealed the bitter tasting tea can keep cancer cells dormant, by knocking out their energy supply, stopping them from ‘refuelling’.
University of Salford researchers have branded their results striking, as scientists continue to hunt down cures for cancer.
They assessed the effects of a matcha extract on breast cancer stem cells which can transform into any tumour cell, divide and renew themselves.
The team delved into its effects by using metabolic phenotyping, a scientific process that examines how compounds directly impact cells.
Through that, they found matcha tea extract suppresses the metabolism of mitochondria, considered the powerhouse of each cell.
Professor Michael Lisanti, who led the study, revealed the extract had shifted the cancer cells towards a quiescent metabolic state.
He added: In other words, it is preventing the cells from refuelling and therefore they become inactive and die.
The results were published in the scientific journal Aging.

Are There Safety Considerations Regarding Tea Consumption
Tea as a food item is generally recognized as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Safety studies have looked at the consumption of up to 1200 mg of EGCG in supplement form in healthy adults over 1- to 4-week time periods . The adverse effects reported in these studies included excess intestinal gas, nausea, heartburn, stomach ache, abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, and muscle pain . In a Japanese study, children aged 6 to 16 years consumed a green tea beverage containing 576 mg catechins or 75 mg catechins for 24 weeks with no adverse effects . The safety of higher doses of catechins in children is not known.
Aluminum, a neurotoxic element, is found in varying quantities in tea plants. Studies have found concentrations of aluminum in infusions of green and black teas that range from 14 to 27 micrograms per liter to 431 to 2239 g/L . The variations in aluminum content may be due to different soil conditions, different harvesting periods, and water quality . Aluminum can accumulate in the body and cause osteomalacia and neurodegenerative disorders, especially in individuals with renal failure . However, it is not clear how much of the aluminum in tea is bioavailable, and there is no evidence of any aluminum toxicity associated with drinking tea .

Prevention Of Colorectal Adenoma Recurrence With 10 Japanese
The Saitama Prefectural Tea Research Institute began to produce tablets of green tea extract , which is the dried form of green tea beverage. One tablet is equivalent to approximately 2 Japanese-size cups of green tea. One hundred two healthy citizens of Saitama Prefecture joined the preclinical safety trial of G.T.E, with informed consent. The blood examination did not show any serious effects, and 93% of the participants were able to continue drinking green tea beverage and also taking G.T.E . Because some of the subjects had very mild temporary disorders, the Tea Research Institute subsequently reduced the caffeine content of the tablets from 5% to less than 3% without using an organic solution.

Using Green Tea To Help Prevent Cancer And Treat Cancer

Tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and premature death in general, with each additional cup of green tea a day associated with a 4-percent lower mortality risk. So, perhaps drinking several cups of tea daily can keep the doctor away, as well as the morticianbut what about cancer?
As I discuss in my video Can Green Tea Help Prevent Cancer, there is growing evidence from laboratory, epidemiologic , and human intervention studies that tea can exert beneficial disease-preventive effects and, further, may actually slow cancer progression. Lets review some of that evidence.
Green tea may be able to interfere with each of the stages of cancer formation: the initiation of the first cancer cell, promotion into a tumor, and then subsequent progression and spread, as you can see at 1:24 in my video. Cancer is often initiated when a free radical oxidizes our DNA, causing a mutation, but, as you can see at 1:44 in my video, we can get a nice spike of antioxidant power of our bloodstream within 40 minutes of drinking green tea. This increase may, in turn, lower oxidative damage to DNA and so decrease risk of cancer.
Furthermore, in terms of genoprotective effectsthat is, protecting our genespre-existing oxidation-induced DNA damage was lower after drinking green tea, suggesting consumption can boost DNA repair as well. We didnt know for certain, howeveruntil now.
How Green Tea May Thwart Lung Cancer

A new study shows for the first time how a compound in green tea might work to suppress lung cancer.
A compound found in green tea, called EGCG, was already known to have anti-cancer properties. But researchers are still trying to figure out all the ways EGCG acts to suppress tumor growth.
The new study found EGCG raises levels of a molecule called mi-R210 inside lung cancer cells.
Cancer cells with higher levels of mi-R210 multiplied more slowly than lung cancer cells with lower levels, the study showed. In addition, cells with high mi-R210 levels lost the ability to grow on top of each other, a hallmark of cancer cells.
The study was conducted in cells in a dish, and more research is needed to determine if the same thing happens to cells inside the body.
Many laboratory studies suggest green tea may protect against cancer or slow cancer growth, but studies in humans have had mixed results, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Cancer rates tend to be lower in countries, such as Japan, where people drink more green tea, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center .
A 2010 Taiwanese study examined the smoking and tea drinking habits of more than 500 people, and found that the risk of lung cancer was 5 times higher in those who did not drink green tea. Among smokers , the risk was 12 times higher.
However, other studies have found drinking green tea or black tea increases the risk of lung cancer, UMM says.

Green Tea And Egcg Increased The Average Value Of Youngs Modulus Of Cancer Cells And Inhibited Cell Motility
Cell stiffness can be determined using atomic force microscope , which quantitatively provides the average value of Youngs modulus of cancer cells. In 2007, Gimzewskis group at UCLA reported that metastatic cells in pleural fluids obtained from lung, breast, and pancreatic cancer patients have significantly lower average values of Youngs modulus with less stiffness – determined using AFM – than normal mesothelial cells in the body fluids . They also found that green tea extract dramatically increased cell stiffness of metastatic cancer cells, from 0.43 kPa to 2.53 kPa, about 6.2-fold, based on the average value of Youngs moduli in nine cancer cell lines . The results indicated that AFM can measure the changes in cell stiffness induced by EGCG.
Inhibition Of Metastases Of B16 Melanoma Cells To The Lungs Of Mice By Drinking Egcg
Taniguchis group reported for the first time that oral administration of EGCG inhibited lung metastases of two different B16 melanoma variants in two experimental models . Hematogenous metastasis was induced with intravenous injection of highly metastatic B16-F10 cells in male C57BL/6 mice given a solution of 0.05% and 0.1% EGCG. Lymphogenous metastasis was induced by inoculation of highly metastatic and invasive B16-BL6 cells into the right foot pads of male C57BL/6 mice, given the same solutions of EGCG. EGCG reduced the average number of lung nodules . To understand the inhibitory effects of EGCG on metastasis, Suganumas group further studied the biophysical effects of EGCG on cell stiffness and motility .

Potential For Combination Effects
A growing number of studies have reported the potential synergistic cancer inhibitor effects of tea and tea components in combination with pharmaceutical agents. This represents a promising new direction that has the potential to increase preventive efficacy and decrease effective concentrations of each agent. A number of studies have shown synergistic growth inhibition or induction of apoptosis by the combination of tea polyphenols and chemotherapeutic agents in cell culture. Although interesting, these studies remain somewhat preliminary with regard to their relevance to in vivo cancer prevention and treatment . Given the uncertainties related to the bioavailability of tea polyphenols and the possibility for artifacts of cell culture including autooxidation to affect the results, the present review focuses on those combinations that have been examined in in vivo model systems.
Lu et al reported that oral administration of PPE in combination with atorvastatin produced greater than additive preventive effects in NNK-induced lung tumor progression. Compared with NNK-treated controls, mice treated with PPE and atorvastatin had a 56% reduction in tumor multiplicity and 54% reduction in tumor burden. Neither PPE nor atorvastatin as single agents had a significant effect on these variables. Molecular analysis showed that combination treatment significantly decreased the expression of the antiapoptotic protein Mcl-1 and increased the apoptotic index in tumor cells.
