Church Decline In The Late 19th Century
Early church members were usually workers in lowland industrial areas who turned to religion out of a “reflex of despair.” Despite attempts at Gaelic language preaching by William McKay in 1847, and even the printing of a Gaelic language pamphlet “Do Suchdsiridh Kioghachd Dhe” in 1850, few Highlanders joined the church.
With an increase in church membership, there were four conferences held in Scotland in Glasgow, Kilmarnock, Edinburgh, and Dundee between 1855 and 1859. This church growth did not go unnoticed. Some of the church members in the mid-19th century were persecuted. Violent acts occurred in Kirkpatrick when members were stoned, and also in Busby where mobs gathered. In 1850 Scots law “prohibited the disruption of religious assemblies” to avoid violence in Edinburgh.
In March 1862 the Apostle Amasa Mason Lyman gave a speech in Dundee which, when 5 years later Brigham Young and other Mormon leaders saw a copy of it, would lead to him being stripped of his apostleship.
After the outbreak of the Second World War all the church’s American missionaries were again evacuated. This was completed by early 1940 when Hugh B. Brown, then serving as president of the British Mission, returned to the USA. In his place a local Latter-day Saint, Andre K. Anastasiou, was appointed. Brown returned to the UK on 29 March 1944 and again began serving as the mission president. American missionaries would begin to return in 1946.

Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Friday announced a change in the seminary program for high school students.
Beginning in January, students in seminary will study the same topic as they do in Sunday classes at church and home a change welcomed by local seminary instructors.
They will get more, getting it from seminary, getting from home, from church, said Seminary Principal Jonathan Hall. They will learn more and then they will come to our classrooms and share things that will help other students learn more.
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles who sits on the Church Board of Education, said this change is significant and will benefit seminary students and their families.
Despite the change to a calendar year curriculum, students will still begin seminary as they enter high school or secondary school. The course requirements for seminary graduation will also remain in place.

In seminary, hundreds of thousands of students and their teachers meet to study the scriptures, including the Bible , the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price.
There are currently over 400,000 seminary students in over 170 countries. Seminary classes begin a new year of study almost every month of the year in countries all over the world. All youth ages 14 to 18, whether members of the LDS faith or not, are invited to participate in this wonderful program.
Consistent attendance, regular participation, and graduation from seminary helps students learn and feel the truthfulness of the gospel and associate with others who uplift and encourage them. A major focus of seminary is that students read daily from the scriptures and read each book of study for that year. Daily personal study of the word of God provides opportunities to learn the gospel, develop testimony, and hear the Lords voice. As students come to understand the doctrines and principles contained in the scriptures they are studying, their attitudes and behavior will improve and they will be prepared to share truth with others.
Their future in this world and in the world to come depends on what spirit they will follow. Your power to help them depends upon your capacity to teach them so that they discern and want to follow the Spirit of God .

How Mormon Seminaries Recruit And Keep Their Teachers
Teacher recruitment and retention is an ongoing battle for public schools in Utah. According to recent data nearly 50 percent of Utah teachers leave the classroom in the first five years. But outside of public schools there are some teaching jobs that never face a shortage.
Go to basically any high school in Utah and close by will be a little brick building with students trickling in and out all day. The sign out front will say The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Seminary.
Most Mormon teenagers attend seminary, an hour long religious class, in the early morning hours before school but in areas with a high LDS population high school and junior high students can opt to take a class during the school day.
At the West High School seminary building in Salt Lake City, students start off their Wednesday morning class with a hymn and then they jump into test prep.
The teacher Damon Kenrick guides the students through a review sheet. The test wont count for any high school credit, but it will be graded. The topic this year is the Book of Mormon. The students pair off and review some scriptures, including some about the fall of Adam and Eve.
One student, Kaitlin Rogers, attempts to articulate a central Mormon doctrine.
“People kind of blame Eve for and say she fell into temptation and it was a horrible thing but if it never happened we wouldnt be here,” Rogers says.
