Does The Roast Impact On The Flavor

The Best Bean To Cup

You know the green beans contain the oils and acidity and they arent able to leave flavor unless you roast them. Considering the flavor you want, you can roast the beans at different levels and when youll force the beans to roast under different temperatures, they will start losing the oils and acidity to raise a perfect flavor. The darkest beans will contain less oil and acidity than medium or lightly roasted beans. The flavor also varies with the type of the roasts. You can get a full detailed here that explains the core processes of roasting coffee beans.

Kicking Horse coffee is currently Canadas #1 organic fair trade coffee, which is pretty cool and pretty serious. In this industry Fair Trade basically means a percentage of the sale on each bag is donated to coffee harvesters from developing countries. What Espresso Beans Do Italians Use

Well, since espresso coffee originates in Italy, a great question to ask is which espresso beans do Italian use.

In Italy two brands that stand out are Illy and Lavazza with Lavazza seen as the high-end coffee beans for using to make an espresso and Lavazza more commonly used to brew up homemade espressos with a Moka pot.

For those not at all familiar with Italy, it is literally two distinct countries in one, while some may argue three due to each part. North, South and Central all being very different culturally, gastronomically and economically.

As far as coffee goes, Italy is two nations, North and South. In the North, Arabica beans are preferred, whereas in the south, Arabica does not dominate so much, with tastes split between Arabica and Robusta beans.

How To Choose The Right Coffee Beans For You

What are the different roast types and how do they vary?

Dark roasts are roasted at a high temperature for a longer time, and this makes them more soluble and better suited to the shorter extraction times used in espresso making. The beans will be dark in colour and will sometimes have an oily surface.

On the other end of the spectrum, light roasts have been roasted for a shorter period of time and are less soluble, making them better for filter coffee which have longer extraction times than espresso. They are lighter in colour and wont have an oily surface.

Medium roasts, as their name suggests, land towards the middle of the spectrum. They offer a balanced profile between light and dark roasts, while still being well-suited for espresso.

Although your chosen roast level is, up to a point, a matter of taste, using a lighter roast for espresso can result in a sour or tart cup while using a darker roast for filter coffee might taste too bitter.

Another term you might encounter is omni-roast, and as the name suggests this is a roast designed to work with a variety of different brewing methods. It can be a little trickier to eke out all the best flavours from an omni-roast grind size and dosage can be more finicky but the benefit is that you can grind an omni-roast to suit filter coffee, immersion brewing or espresso as you see fit.

Blend or single origin?

Blackwelder Coffee 100% Arabica Espresso Whole Bean Coffee

Blackwelder is a total hipster micro-roastery based out of California, but their beans taste luxurious and rich and live up to the hype generated by their slick, black, minimalist packaging.

They also tout that their owners taste each and every batch they roast and are committed to a perfect product in every bag, which I really respect. Blackwelder is truly a craft roaster and their blends are not mass-produced and over-roasted as a result.

The espresso blend is a medium-dark roast combining beans from Latin American and Indonesia. The flavor profile is smooth but intense above all with a round caramel flavor and low acidity. This isnt a bitter blend and its an easy daily drinker for both new and experienced palates.

How Many Shots Of Espresso Are In A Latte

The answer to this is going to surprise you and perhaps make you think twice about which latte you order at Starbucks.

A regular latte that you make at home or get a regular coffee shop is made with a single shot of espresso unless specifically requested.

At Starbucks, a tall latte is made with only one espresso shot while their Grande is made with a double shot of espresso.

Normal logic would have you think that a Starbucks Venti has a triple shot, but, unfortunately, logic is out of the window here as a venti has only two shots of espresso with the rest made up of milk and froth.

Basically, you are getting a latte that has more milk and less coffee.

No bueno, Starbucks, no bueno!

Best Organic Ground Coffee

Flavor: Medium roast with butterscotch flavor | Bean type: Ground, whole bean, and instant coffee | Bag size: 12-ounce bags | Price: From $2.33 per ounce

Lifeboost offers a bean with low acidity that doesnt skimp on complex flavor. The coffee comes out tasting sweet think caramelly, butterscotchy, and chocolaty, says Jordan Resenacker, co-founder of Atlas Coffee Club. It has a little bit of roasted-nut and milk-chocolate notes to it, and if theres any acidity, its a touch similar to what youd find in a red apple or pear. The Arabica beans are grown in Nicaragua and are USDA-certified.

Verena Street 5 Pound Espresso Beans

This Espresso by Verena Street is a unique bean coffee produced by a firm in Iowa, United States. The Arabica beans are acquired from Indonesia, Central America, and South America, and are 100 percent Arabica.

The beans are divided into small quantities and freshly roasted to guarantee a uniform and consistent roast. As a result, the coffee beans are smooth and glossy, making them ideal for a grind. Espressos created using Shot Towers exclusive roasting, and blending processes have a rich, creamy, mysterious flavor. Fruity, smokey, earthy, and chocolaty aromas would remain after the smooth liquid was finished.

Its a beverage low in acid, like other dark roasts. If you enjoy a strong cup of coffee, this type of coffee beans may be too mild for you. Nevertheless, if you brew your espresso with fine grinds, the coffee concentration in the cappuccino will be higher.

Another disadvantage is the coffee beans relatively high oil content. This does not affect the flavor, but it may clog up even the greatest coffee grinder. This kind of coffee beans are reasonably priced for a good product.

The Most Popular Starbucks Latte Flavors

I did a semi-scientific poll to find out the most popular Latte flavor sold at Starbucks. Over 180 people replied and the clear consensus was Caramel Macchiato, followed closely behind by Vanilla. Surprisingly Pumpkin Spice Latte didn’t do well, maybe because I ran the poll in the spring and not the fall.

See the results for yourself down below.

Q: How Much Milk Do You Put In A Venti Latte

A: As the largest sized coffee offered at Starbucks, a Venti measures 20 ounces all in all. The second largest size is a Grande which has 16 ounces of beverage. Whats interesting is that according to SCAA guidelines, there should only be one ounce of espresso for every eight ounces of beverage.

And keeping in mind that both the Venti and Grande only use 2 shots of espresso, the difference is made up for by the moo juice. As such, a 20 ounce Venti latte will have 2 ounces of espresso and 18 ounces of milk. These numbers clearly show that a bigger cup really doesnt mean more caffeine in your coffee just more milk and foam.
